We and 20 of our family stayed at the Portsmouth Hotel in May, 2024 and it was great. All of the rooms were nicely renovated and had a lot of character. The common rooms like the living rooms, breakfast room, and game room were very useful to our group as places to both meet and hang out in the evening. The location is very close to the shops and restaurants of downtown and to the harbor. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and made our large group feel very welcome.
We highly recommend it and will definitely go back.

We stayed at The Hotel Portsmouth for 3 nights at the beginning of February. It was a beautiful place! Clean and comfortable rooms! Friendly service from check in to check out. The breakfast was perfect and there was something for everyone. We were there for the Band of Horses concert at the Music hall. Everything was in walking distance. Lots of cute shops, coffee places, great restaurants. The hotel even provides a map and suggestions for where to go, eat or visit. We will definitely be back! Thanks for a wonderful stay!

We stayed here two weeks ago and could not have been happier. It’s an old elegant building with very comfortable amenities, including a great continental breakfast, tea and coffee available around the clock, and water (still and fizzy) to fill up the carafe in your room. The bed was incredibly comfortable (the sheets are the best I’ve ever slept on), the hotel was quiet, and free parking in their lot was a huge bonus. It’s located downtown, just a 5 minute walk from many restaurants and shops. And at the end of our evening we spent a hour sitting in the parlor in the front of the hotel, having tea and cookies (complimentary) in front of the fireplace. It was a lovely stay and we will be back one day!

Excellent experience and would stay again for sure. The gentleman ( his name escapes me🙁) was fabulous! Courteous, informative and super welcoming and friendly! Our room was beautiful and spacious. Everything was clean and tidy with excellent toiletries. My husband and I have NO complaints! There was even a member of the staff who found me a bandaid for a blister on my foot! If I had one suggestion it would be to consider a mini fridge in the room and maybe update the hairdryer… but really I got nothing! We had an excellent stay and visit and look forward to the next time!
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

This is a great place to stay! The location is perfect for walking to everything downtown. The queen deluxe room was very spacious and the bed very comfortable. The shower/toilet area is not huge but big enough! The breakfast was just as described, continental with lot of options including yogurt parfaits and cold protein choices. Do not be scared off by any negative reviews. It’s an old inn that is lovely and super clean!

The hotel staff was welcoming from the moment we arrived and throughout our stay. The room was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was appealing and delicious. The architecture, superb! Location is within walking distance of everything you need, such as restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and local sites. Truly a wonderful place to stay in Portsmouth!

This is a great place. Very comfortable bed. The breakfast is far better then any typical hotel breakfast. Location is great. Staff are friendly and helpful. Everything I wanted in a hotel for our anniversary stay in Portsmouth.

A great hotel

Staying at this hotel feels like being on a movie set. The management kept the original structure and modernized it. Rooms are large, nice and clean. Bathrooms are quite nice despite the small-medium size. The building is very nice and historic. There is also a nice reception area to rest or play. Breakfast is ok.
If you get a room next to the main reception, you will find it a bit noisy as the doors are not the best at insulating from noises (we could hear talking and noises from the check ins and outs unfortunately).
Location is great. A few minutes from the centre, it is safe with many restaurants nearby.
Overall, nice experience.

Location--Right in downtown Portsmouth which is nice.
Parking--Free parking in the back of the property, plenty of parking space.
Room--It was amazing, clean, comfortable, and the room vibe was very charming in a old-fashion way!
Shower--Shower was super awesome, it has a handheld showerhead which is amazing, and the water stays pretty hot for a long time! It was a lifesaver on a cold winter night :))
Breakfast--It was okay, it's the only part that we didn't like too much. Coffee and tea was alright could be much better; boil eggs and hams were great, but that's about it there's no other deli you can eat on cold winter mornings... but since it's free so I suppose we shouldn't complain about it.

The hotel has the best location. The beds and pillows very comfortable. Room very clean, even rugs. Loved the shower. Justin registered us. Very friendly. Had lots of ideas for places to visit and restaurants. Breakfast was included, also very good. Someone there to replenish the whole time. Coffee was tasty Will definitely go back.

well we thought this was great.... a smallish hotel with park-your-own parking, a text message when your room is available, if so, before the normal time. nice comfortable quiet rooms with great bath facilities and showers, breakfast was great and the dining area inviting....close to the downtown areas and restaurants, nice sitting by the fire place in the front room, and helpful and informative staff....

This is our second visit to this lovely hotel. We do an annual Christmas overnight with some friends every year. We discovered The Hotel Portsmouth last year and loved it so much we decided to visit again this year and will again next year! From check in with very informative and friendly Justin, who is also a great host, starting a fire in the common room, giving us lots of information on the history of the hotel, places in the area, etc. Rooms are very clean, we had a Queen deluxe, love the sink and counter area outside of the bathroom shower area. Beds, bedding and pillows very nice! Robes, hairdryer, glasses, ice bucket even an umbrella in the closet if you need one! We love the common room with working fireplace, beautifully decorated for Christmas and nice Christmas music playing, we hung out there with drinks and snacks we brought and talked and laughed with our friends for hours. Great location to everything, free parking is a plus and if not raining could have walked to many spots. Breakfast was very nice with small plates. Breakfast room is adorable with nice touches, water, ice, fruit out all day, coffee, tea. We will be back!! Thank you Justin for being a great host!

The room was wonderful! Got a deluxe king room and it was wonderfully spacious, and the claw foot tub was a dream! It was a thoughtful touch to include bath salts. Breakfast was nicely put together, and the different shared areas (game room, lounge, dining area) were beautifully decorated and I wish we stayed longer to appreciate them more. The location was also great, walking distance from Market Square. Will definitely return!

It was definitely a treat staying at this hotel. It was so unique and the hospitality was wonderful. It was within walking distance to downtown Portsmouth where you can find shopping, eating, Strawberry Banke and Prescott Park. We will surely go again next time we’re in the area.

Definitely worth staying here when visiting Portsmouth. Very responsive staff. Clean, fresh & well appointed rooms. Common areas are warm & welcoming with beautiful period architectural detail. Simple continental breakfast. Ample guest parking. A quiet retreat yet close to shopping & restaurants.

Incredible stay. Room was clean and comfortable. Staff made the experience special. You could tell they put a lot of effort/love into the breakfast. The community spaces were awesome. There was a woman reading quietly in one room and we played cards next to another couple playing a board game in the room across the hall.

Absolutely, hands down, the best hotel we’ve ever stayed at! Super clean, decorated to perfection, and each and every staff that we interacted with were some of the most friendly individuals I’ve ever met! Extremely recommended, and we will be back for sure!! Thank you for such a wonderful visit!

We had an adult weekend away!
(with No Kids) The charm, location & Staff make this place! The old school charm is just that and I loved it! Be mindful though this is not your modern hotel... this is a classic and because if that a few things you may have to adjust to.
Room: Our bathroom was smaller but the detail to make it work flawlessly was obvious. Our bed, the mattress was great but they need a better bed frame( No support). Pillows great, fan already in the room, and the water jug super cute. Most importantly everything seemed clean!
Location: Perfect! You couldn't ask for a better location. Walking distance to everything! Yet out of the busyness of downtown.
We will hopefully stay again because I LOVE It!

Such a perfect little stay in a cute town! We spent this past weekend there and this had everything we needed. Breakfast spread, cozy couches for reading, fireplace, and the kindest staff. We can’t wait to come back again and we will for sure be staying again at The Hotel Portsmouth!
