Popovers On the Square

Discovered this place during a day trip to Portsmouth and it is my new favorite lunch spot! I have Celiac and there were so many safe options for me. The ham and cheese quiche with clam chowder really hit the spot on a cold snowy day. The service was really fantastic as well and made me feel very cared for!

Popovers was a place I wanted to try before even getting to Portsmouth and it didn’t disappoint. My wife and I ordered the loaded scrambled egg popovers. At first it seemed to take longer than we expected for our food but it was worth it. Definitely will be back

Cool cafe feel, and employees were super nice and helpful in helping us figure out our order. The popovers themselves were delicious! The maple butter was the perfect Got French toast as well which was really good. If you haven't tried a popover before, you definitely wanna check this place out!

Really fun place. The popovers dipped in hot chocolate was great morning treat. My daughter got the fully loaded breakfast popover with eggs, bacon, and cheese and I was very jealous. It’s like the best egg McMuffin you’ve ever eaten.

One of the least expensive places in Porsmouth where you can get a cup of tea with the first rate pastry. I'm particularly fond of their Raspberry Chambord.

The staff is beyond caring. Drove up from NY. It had been awhile since I had seen my parents because I had broken both my elbows and ulnas and couldn’t move for many months. Took my mom and dad here for lunch per my mom’s request as she said it’s really her favorite. The staff quickly ran to clean off tables that people had just left. They were so understanding about my mom and dad’s walkers. They were incredible with all our different food requests and changes. Extremely patient with our complex order. They described the beer tastes and varieties for my partner. My mom is in the Cedar nursing home and she doesn’t get out much. So what they did next to make this special occasion even more special brought me to tears. My mom asked us for a popover with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup. It wasn’t on the menu. They made it and brought it over to my mom. The joy on my mom’s face I will cherish forever. I can’t thank you all for creating such a special afternoon for our family. It meant the world. Big hugs!

Food is delicious, love the baked goods! Dining area can be really crowded and hard to move through. We also picked up a cake tasting to go that we had ordered through the website, and we loved that. It made the process so much less stressful and low pressure!

Someone suggested this establishment, since popovers are not that common we decided to try it! Warm, delicious popover with Maple butter! We also shared the quiche and fruit. The server had worked there for 15 years! Great experience and with a smile! We took a dozen home and my mother approves as well!

Great shop just a few blocks from the bridge. The have both indoor and outdoor seating. Awesome cakes and desserts. My french apple crumble was amazing. The dark chocolate mocha was yummy smooth. Highly recommended.

The loaded popover is delicious. My husband had a regular one, I had one that was gluten free. I just wish the potatoes inside were seasoned. Kinda pricey, but worth it to try it.

Excellent experience overall. The staff was nice and attentive and the food was tasty. The popovers with maple butter are fantastic. The atmosphere is more upscale than I remember, but inviting to all.

Great breakfast! We had no idea what we were walking into and found a great breakfast experience. I had a loaded popover which was a flaky hallow pastry loaded with potatoes, eggs and bacon. Real good start to our day.

The toughest decision I’ve had to make at Popovers is whether to go with the breakfast sandwich or a popover as they are both so delicious. This time the breakfast sandwich won and I was thrilled with the decision! The staff are friendly and helpful and it’s our go-to in the area for special cakes. You really can’t go wrong there!

I always order cake from this bakery. My favorite are Chocolate cake, Cheese cake, and Strawberry Gateau. They also have gluten free cakes but you have order in advance. They offer wide varieties of sandwiches, soups, and salads.

I love Tomato Bisque and vegetation Panini. I cannot resist myself to have Tiramisu dessert whenever I go to Popovers. They have inside and outside sitting options. Enjoy Portsmouth down view with awesome food.

Delicious food, lovely shop, friendly service. The popovers themselves are fantastic, and a must-try for anyone who isn't familiar with them. They're custardy from the egg, but more salty than an average pastry because of the salt and low sugar. The maple butter they serve it with is perfect for adding as much sweetness as you want.

Buttery popover, great and cozy atmosphere, wonderful service - my time at Popovers On the Square was the highlight of my Portsmouth trip.

I got the scrambled eggs in a popover with American cheese - it came out hot, the eggs were silky smooth, and it popover was light and flaky. The dining room (and bathroom) was super clean, modern in decor, and well organized / COVID-safe. Everyone I interacted with was super pleasant and happy to be there. I was there with my puppy and was able to enjoy sitting outside. It was pretty busy, but I didn't have to wait for a table outdoors.

I do wish I got some more to try, so I'll definitely be coming back the next time i am in Portsmouth.

The chocolate cream pie and the key lime pie we bought for Pi Day were both very delicious! I'm excited to try the snickerdoodle cookie I also bought. The staff were very helpful and friendly, they even sliced our pies when we took them to-go. They had lots of great cakes on display. The business was nice and clean and quite lively when we went by at 4pm on a Monday afternoon.

Crème brûlée was beautifully crisp on top and had a lovely textured and flavorful custard inside. The fresh fruit added so much to this dish! Chocolate chip cookies were tasty, but definitely would’ve preferred a less crumbly type of cookie with a soft, gooey inside.. and add more chocolate to the cookie/chip ratio.

Staff was informative about unique dessert types on display and provided friendly service.

What a wonderful Gem of a place! And they have gluten-free popovers! And a really delicious decaf iced tea. Patio is wonderful. Wish I lived closer!

One of my favorite places to stop at while in Portsmouth or heading up north. The popovers they have are delicious and I get them everytime I go. I can never only get one though its usually at least a few or a half dozen to take home. They have a bunch of different desserts and pastries also as well as coffee and other beverages. Definitely worth the stop.
