Say what you will...this VA has helped me and saved me. They have the best doctors from UCSD. They are not perfect...no one is. I'm a retired veteran and I pay next to nothing for my health care.

Brodie Houser, a prosthetist at the San Diego Healthcare System La Jolla Medical Center, deserves the most absolute recognition and praise ever.

So he discovered that my prosthetic was off by about 0.75” out of height. This caused me to have some gnarly pain in my right leg.

As soon as he came back with the adjusted prosthetic, I slipped it on, and was walking better than ever. I even got so confident that I was able to walk using the platform with just one hand.

I can’t thank him enough for taking the time to properly adjust my leg, and coach me on how to walk easier.

By far the worst ER visit for a veteran ever! Absolutely zero communication from the triage staff, left with zero treatment because the crew working didn't care enough about my health. Definitely giving veterans a second chance to die from lack of care.

UPDATED REVIEW:
My complaints were heard because the day following my reviews and complaints, the ER Manager came into the ER in my room looking for me when he heard that I was there. He addressed my concerns. Last night on the 18th of July, I ended up in the ER again and it was an entirely different experience.

The level of professionalism and care was top notch and I felt much better when I left. Thank You to the entire ER crew that was working between 1400 and 2300 hours on the 18th. That is the level of care that I know and love from the VA. Not the one that happened 5 months ago.

Going to this medical center has always been a positive experience. For this instance, I had to go to dental for a tooth ache that I had. Turns out that I cracked my tooth and they gave me the option to either extract the tooth today or make an appointment for a later date. I chose the first option and they got things rolling very quickly. At oral surgery, Dr Sabol and Chris explained the entire process about extracting the bad tooth. By doing so, this made me very comfortable with the procedure and gave me the assurance that I was in good hands. From start to finish, it took about 5 minutes to take out the tooth and it was painless! Thank you to all the staff at the dental department for my positive experience. Your service is greatly appreciated.

Had a few stops here. Each time I have been helped with my issues. The wait times vary depending on the time of day like all hospitals. I went to the ER at like 11pm on a weekday and was seen right away because it was empty. Sat for an hour for an appointment because it was mid day on a weekday and there were so many people, the seating was minimal. Plan accordingly if not an emergency.

I have read through the reviews and noticed a trend, people complain about not being seen and I can't say for sure but, looks like they aren't registered for benefits. If you haven't done the proper leg work to get registered in the VA, why should they help you? You won't even help yourself.

I was an inpatient at the VA Hospital in La Jolla from 10-18-23-19 due to my illness. I was treated very well and tended to by all the staff members. From the ER Staff, Escort, Lab Techs, the nurses and the nursing asst. Everyone made me very special. Their kindness, caring hearts. They were very professional and their customer service was above 100 percent. I am not only a 100 percent disabled veteran, I am also a retired UCLA medical asst. Their positive energy helped me recover faster and that made me feel good. Thank you VA Hospital La Jolla !

This VA is great. The staff is amazing. When I’m going through a rough time they are always there for me. Getting appointments isn’t an issue and the hospital has been clean every time I have visited. The only problem I had was recent. They have people who I know are not directly employed by the VA standing at the front screening people with COVID questions. I got there for an appointment for my vaccine. They told me I couldn’t come in because I had my daughter. Their supervisor REALLY REALLY REALLY gave me a card to the VA hospital I was at and told me to call the hospital I was at, the hospital THAT SHE WAS AT, the hospital she was currently working at, and told me to ask for an escort. I had a “Is this really happening?” moment.. Especially because I drove up there quite a ways using someone else’s car to get my vaccine.. So my daughter and I stood outside the hospital with the cold wind blowing on us. I wouldn’t care if it were just me because I trained, worked and slept outside many many many times while I was enlisted BUT! I had my daughter... The supervisor couldn’t make a trip down the hall for me. Laziness on their part because there were three of the employees at the front. It was insane.. Their program manager needs to change a few things about the way they conduct business. The two women were unprofessional, and by the time the escorts came to help me the women didn’t screen me, which is what she is there to do to begin with, until I said something. She said, “Oh yeah” .. They couldn’t give me a reason why I needed an escort for my daughter and I. I was thinking, “ Is this a test?” After passing through that circus everything was fine. The escorts were amazing and the nurses and all the staff in the hospital that I encountered that day were amazing. Just a heads up if you happen to run into the same experience I had, you’re not alone.

As a grunt and Army veteran, I’m used to average services from the VA. I have to say that I was recently surprised (shocked?) with the exceptional vaccination team at the La Jolla VA hospital. They had fun music, all the employees were respectful and professional and the nurses top notch. It made me proud of VA medicine.

Probably the best healthcare I've had in a while. The doctors and nurses genuinely seemed to care about my health when I was admitted for diabetes.

Don't get me wrong, there was one nurse that seemed to hate her job but all of the other medical staff really seemed to genuinely care about my predisposition.

Much better than the VA in Nashville, TN lol. I feel like went from a 5 star resort to a budget inn. I still have been unable to schedule a primary care provider out here in Nashville.

I wish I was in San Diego.

Recently had a surgery to remove a fibroid and Dr Semo, Dr Stellar and team were all amazing!!! There was a lot of preparation with MRIs and Blood Labs and Anesthesia Consults etc, so I was 💯 % confident and optimistic going in

My recovery has been good and I’m just elated to receive this level of service at no cost to me as a benefit of being a veteran.

I know people hear crazy things about the VA in general but this is one location DEFINITELY trying to break the stereotype. They’re kind, caring, and they treated me like family.

God bless them at the VA La Jolla!

Had to visit the ER while visiting from out of town- i was nervous but the staff was very kind and i was seen quickly- overall i was there for quite some time, but my time there was spent actually getting care while the staff took extra care to make sure i was taken care of before i was sent off- i cannot thank the ER staff enough for how i was treated

I had a visit to the Emergency room yesterday and the care I got was super efficient. After checking in, I only waited 10 minutes before getting my vital signs taken. I was sent for Xrays right away and then seen by a doctor within an hour after xrays were done. Since I was being seen for my knees, ankles and hips, I was not needlessly given or stuck with an IV or hooked up to an EKG. A pharmacist came with my medication and explained the side effects to me before I was discharged. The entire length of stay was less than 4 hours. That is the speediest ER visit I have ever had!

La Jolla and Minneapolis are the 2 best VA hospitals in the whole system. I have been in numerous VA facilities and the care here is great. They are dedicated people who care and put up with a lot. I have had to wait a year for an appointment just to see my primacy care doctor.

I pray we will continue to have a VA facility to go to by the time congress gets done. Congress can give corporations a large tax cut but they can't fund the VA.

I've been going to this VA Hospital for years. It has been a life saver to have the VA hospital here in San Diego. Its the only VA hospital in southern California. I have always been treated well and respected by the staff. I have gone here for many different appointments from blood work to the emergency room for care. I've had great experiences here. Thank you VA San Diego!

The mental health providers here Leslie and Kendra are so professional and knowledgeable. They truly care for their patients and always get back to me if I send a message or call. It the women’s primary care provider Dr. Ottaka is also and thorough and knowledgeable. The San Diego VA gives me better care than I’ve experienced by Camp Pendleton or at VCC. Also great prenatal coordinator!
