Open Mind Music

We were strolling down College Avenue looking in the windows of different shops. We felt invited into Open Mind Music with it's colorful rainbow rug, and Dutch door open at the top.

There were large paintings and posters thoughtfully placed on the walls. Jazz was softly playing on the record player on the left side of the store. It felt so comfortable being their space.

We were greeted by Monica who was dressed in gently faded denim bell bottoms with a matching shirt. She looked like she had stepped out of the early 70s while organizing LPs in the oak bins. Everything looked orderly and clean. Some of the LPs were brand new, and others looked like they were barely used.

Walked into this place after not finding what I needed at Amoeba. I was immediately floored by the quantity and quality of great rare wall records. The owner, I believe Henry, was very warm and welcoming. The shop is very organized and clean and does this cool thing where every record is described on a sticker. If you’re looking for a spot with both new and used releases, with both vintage and modern artist selections of Rock, blues, jazz, folk, country, etc, then check this place out.

Love the new larger location of the Open Mind Music vintage record store. It has an amazing selection of expertly curated LP albums in classic rock, new wave, jazz, and every other genre. It’s nice not to have to wade through a bunch of bad records to find the gems. The owners are real music experts and a pleasure to chat with about music. They sell some turntables and other high fi equipment too.

Cool vinyl records and the owners are super cool. They mainly sell vinyl but also sell art work, and some CD's($5). During Covid, they're selling masks that are of high quality. Dogs are welcomed as well.

You will leave Open Mind Music with something great in your bag. Whether it's a recent re-release of a classic album or that OG mint copy of that coveted album, or something new by a local artist, they will likely have something for you. It's nice to go to a record store where they will actually talk to you about the music you are purchasing and make further recommendations. Overall, a very pleasant, clean, organized atmosphere with rockin' taste in music. Great selections of rock, soul, jazz, and plenty of cool offerings in just about every other genre known to humankind. Shop local!

Owners are really nice and super helpful. This shop is great for beginner like me because each record has a description of the contacts. They have a lot of older local music and are always down to chat with you about your tastes.

The vibe at Open Mind Music feels like you are walking into a good friend's house on a Friday night after a long week of work: warm lighting greets you; cool vinyl spinning transforms your mood; and co-owners Henry and Monica are either engaging guests/customers in lively discussions about music around the store or relaxing on the inviting couches tucked away in the back corner (often presided over by Roxanne - a mini-longhaired dachshund). My taste in music runs a wide gamut - from John Coltrane to Public Enemy; from Billie Holiday to Lauryn Hill; from Sergio Mendez to Jerry Garcia Band; from White Stripes to Vampire Weekend - and Henry is always prepared to share his vast knowledge and make an excellent recommendation. I have even received a text from Henry about a new record release he thought I might like based on a conversation we had months before (that's way better and more personal than some algorithm suggesting a single song I might "like"!). I can't say enough about this joint - and owners Henry and Monica - it's a must visit for Bay Area music lovers!

Amazing music selection anything you like or love is at this record shop the owners are a great couple and their knowledge of all different types of music is very impressive if you still use vinyl go there and keep your collection going.

Turn back time by selecting the real compact discs. The store has a great vinyls, cds and cassette tapes. The shop owner is very friendly

Amazing local business! Fabulous selection and amazing customer service. I was noticing some skips on a record I bought and on the phone they gave me some adjustments I could try fixing with the tone arm and if that didn’t work to come in. They played the record for me showing me it wasn’t the record that was flawed but instead my record player. So friendly and helpful! Thank you:))
