If you're looking to make your own sushi, sashimi, or poke, and want to pick up some delicious Japanese snacks, groceries, and ready to eat food as well, the Tokyo Fish Market is a stop you need to make when you're in Berkeley. The fish here is consistently fresh, and while it may seem expensive, the quality makes it absolutely worth the cost and it's still cheaper than dining out. The market is fairly cramped and small, but it's chock full of everything you'd need to make an exquisite dinner. The fish mongers are knowledgeable and friendly, and while the line can get super long, it also moves very quickly. All of the food I've purchased there is fresh and the service is friendly. It's a great stop for when we're in the mood for some fresh sushi.

This is my Go To place for shopping seafood and Japanese groceries. They have variety of sakes here. Staff here are also friendly and helpful. They cut and clean the fish for you to your request. Prepare ice for you as well. They seafood quality is the best. I love frozen hamachi kama from the freezer and they pork slice meat. They do have chicken teriyaki that can be re-heat up and taste good. Pork cutlet which is pork rib eye also have very good quality as well. Japanese snacks are also offered here as well.

It's been around forever, more expensive than other markets, but always find something to buy, enjoy visiting there once a while.

I am from Maine. We don't have fish market like this. In fact, we don't even have Japanese stores. It is so hard to find a good Japanese cuisine in Maine. This place is absolutely amazing! I strongly recommend everyone. They have sushi, sashimi, and delicious Japanese food and the price is excellent!

So spoiled if you live nearby and well worth the trip if you don’t. The selection and quality are outstanding. Be sure to come at half hours and avoid holidays because this little store gets packed!

Yes, I do go out of my way for top notch fresh seafood. Got some yellow fin and sea urchin for a family dinner. It was excellent, don't mind spending a few more bucks for quality stuff!

The best selection of fresh fish, at a good price and one of the best for groceries, produce, gifts and prepared foods in the Bay Area. I have been a customer since it started. And will always shop at this wonderful family owned business.

Very well stocked Japanese fish market and grocery. I visited today as a tourist; but this market compares very well to other similar places in LA, Chicago, NYC and Boston/Cambridge. Excellent selection of fish, seafood, dry goods, frozen foods, prepared foods, teas and snacks. If I lived in the area, this would definitely be my go-to Japanese market.

Exceptional Japanese market with some of the area’s absolute top sushi grade fish. You’d have to go hundreds of miles to find a better place. Some interest mainstay items from the Japanese islands as well, and even more selection if you are adventurous or can actually read Japanese on the packaging.

On a standard day you’ll find Toro, Hamachi, Hon Hamachi, Octopus (tako), uni (sea urchin), multiple kinds of salmon, and that’s JUST the sushi grade stuff! They’ll also have 30-40 other kinds of fish and seafood.

The sushi fish comes in beautifully pre-cut portions that remove all the annoyance of prep work, without cutting them too small to make accurate nigiri. Brilliant and appreciated.

Not a ton of distinction between anything that’s sustainable / organic, so do keep an eye on ingredient labels! Plenty of good stuff to be found, though.

Parking is a nightmare with just a tiny handful of spots, so try going around the corner to the dollar store’s larger lot.

Pics are sushi I made with their fish. July 2022.

Went on Saturday around 12pm or 1pm I think. Bring your mask!!! Freeway traffic is always bad to Berkeley. Their parking lot is small (fits maybe 12 cars in total with 1 handicap spot) and there is street parking but that is hard to find too. Getting out is also a pain since it is up to the mercy of oncoming traffic to let you in.

When you enter, the rice sacks are on your right along the wall and alcohol next to it. There are some snacks on a shelf in front of the alcohol. Then it goes onto prepared food items like wakame salad, potato salad(has apple slices surprisingly), shrimp tempura, karaage, yakisoba, tofu skins, that kind of stuff. Pretty decently prices imo for Berkeley. They have onigiri but that is usually gone by lunch time from what I hear, you're lucky to get any if you come in during the evening commute. There was only spam musubi left today which is $4 each and that is too high for me, I don't care if that is the cheapest price in the bay area.

After that still going along the wall is the seafood section where most people that come here are for. They go by a ticket system. Most fileted fish are above $20/lb. There's whole fish that are below that there. They have fresh shellfish but they will not shuck your oysters(they have 4 types) because of covid. So either buy/have a knife ready if you're gonna eat it outside, or do it at home. In front of the seafood area they sell cooking utensils. They have different tobiko for $5 and other smaller packaged sashimi near the end. Your order of seafood will come with a small bag of ice probably, I think my sister might've asked. We brought a cooler with ice packs ourselves also. I didn't take any pictures because the seafood area is packed with people waiting and didn't want to deal with privacy issues of others.

Continuing along the wall, they have produce against the left wall. There are regular and organic versions of some things so be sure you look what you're grabbing. There is cut fruit at the end. The back wall then has pickled items like plums and kimchi, Japanese curry blocks ($3.50 and up) and snacks. A lot of snacks.

In the aisles, you have tapioca and drink mixes. Packaged Asian sausages and dumplings in a fridge. Imitation crab, fish cakes, frozen meats for like shabu shabu. One shelf entirely for sauces and opposite of it is instant ramen and dried noodles. Finally the one facing the cashier area is filled with your teas and sweet drinks. Whenever I go to a Japanese or Korean grocery store, I tend to buy like a lot of drinks lol. Probably at least $30 worth every trip.

If I lived the area, I would probably come here at least 6 times a week for decently priced bento but since I don't(sadly), I only come here occasionally a couple times a year.

Love this market/specialty grocer.

This is my lady and I's go to when it comes to all things japanese/Asian cooking.

Decided to stop by for some dinner necessities, since it was my turn to cook, knowing my lady would be ecstatic! (bonus points 😉)

I ended up grabbing some pre cut pieces of fish that they have next to the big fish counter. They have everything you can imagine, but I ended up going with a Toro (tuna belly), Kampachi fillet, and 2 of the kama Toro (liquid gold IMO). I also ended up getting a cut to order piece of A5 wagyu, they had for $129.99/lb. So beautifully marbled, and fresh, I ate a piece raw when I got home (IYKYK)

They have real wasabi root, but we don't own the proper grinder to make it fresh. Definitely would recommend if you have the means to make it at home! I opted for some House made Pickled ginger, that my lady literally eats like popcorn. Also behind the counter, grab a number and get in line.

Parking can be a battle, you either get it or you don't

Tokyo Fish Market is a great place to get fresh tuna. I would definitely recommend checking it out if you're in the area!

Really friendly, helpful service! I was particularly impressed by an employee who saw me carefully studying the various wasabi options and took initiative to offer advice about the best one to get without me asking. Another employee at the butcher counter was also super helpful because I had no idea how much fish to buy for the sushi party I was organizing, and after listening to my parameters she recommended the perfect amount!

Other highlights include: good prices for sashimi grade fish (make sure you buy it at the butcher counter instead of the pre-cut blocks for the best deals) + a great, well-priced selection of grab-and-go bento boxes/sushi made by the chefs at Musashi (my favorite Japanese restaurant in Berkeley). They even have real, fresh, locally grown wasabi root!

I had a great time buying sashimi grade fish and walking around the market. Quality of fish is arguably the finest one could find.

Best place to get fish in the East Bay. It's way more affordable to just make your own sushi this way instead of going to a restaurant.

One of the things I miss most about no longer living in Berkeley is this wonderful market where I would buy such fresh produce and seafood. The staff were always friendly and helpful as well. Great place to shop!

This is our favorite place to go for onigiris, snacks and drinks. I love the yummy onigiris. We’ve tried all their flavors and it’s so amazingly delicious!! We can also find a huge range of Japanese drinks and going through the various options. Will be back for more.

Ingredients I got from here to make my own chirashi bowl and nigiri. Also cold tofu appetizer to go with it. Love this supermarket for when I’m craving some quality sushi grade salmon and toro belly.
