I know what people have been saying about HPBS's buy-back pricing -- selling media to them, and not getting what was hoped for. But having attempted to sell on eBay before, my attitude about HPBS is this:

They are a business. They have to make a profit or else, we'd be losing a bookstore, and ppl would be losing their jobs. Come on, book lovers -- where would you rather work: a bookstore, or Mickey-D's flipping burgers where you might end up quitting because it's a worse job than HPBS?

Secondly, if you're gonna be so persnickety about trying to get a lot of money off a special edition or specific genre, especially if you do a lot of legwork and research, eBay is definitely your better choice. That is, IF you want to spend the money on various fees for not just listing items (photos, headlines, etc), and keeping a listing going, but paying final value fees, plus shipping (if you're offering free shipping to a customer, thus subtracting that amount from gross profits).

But otherwise, if you're looking just to get rid of books and other media, HPBS is better than trying to run a yard sale, where your very niche books may not even make it off the table, depending on the neighborhood, genre and subject. For example, I am a mystical/spiritual person(not religious). The books I have wouldn't see the wood-grain of most others' bookshelves in my town.

Taking my specific books to HPBS where there will be a lot more people likely to buy my stuff--even if I don't get my full collection value back at all--is a better choice than Ebay for me, because by the time I'm done with any listing, I'll have spent quite a bit of money "dressing up" my listing just to get the books seen by anyone. I don't have that hassle with selling to HPBS, because the books will be out there for everyone to see, I'll have gotten some money out of it, and no real fees to pay, outside of fuel for the trip to the Des Moines area.

The TL;DR here is: if you want the full value of something and don't have a problem with paying Ebay's multiple fees, go for that option, instead of kvetching about not getting "full value" of what you paid for something way-back-when. HPBS is not a place to haggle, bottom line.

Happy to have run across yet another half price book store. The random chance of finding something unique or special always makes it worthwhile to enter and browse.

I love this place. I love used bookstores in general, but HPB will always have my heart. They do have a handful of new books (new releases at full price), but the majority of the store are used books (in great condition) at half off the cover price (plus a few clearance shelves).

Don’t expect to get rich off selling books — they price each item individually and it’s not much, but they offer cash on the spot if you want.

The store is rather large, but well-organized by genre, age group, and author’s last name. It’s always neat and tidy, the staff are friendly, and they also sell other things (new journals/gifts, a small collection of used video games, used CDs and Vinyl records, used board games, etc.)

Well worth the visit! I often find recently released bestsellers in hardbacks that look as if no one ever actually read them (but still half off!)

They always have an eclectic selection of books and children's items. We can usually find something just right for the grandkids.

(This will largely be copied from a review i wrote for HPB in Vernon Hills. Not to sound like a bot or anything. I just basically have the same thing to say for both.)

Half Price Books are very pleasant used bookstores to visit, with well lighted and well arranged stacks, good prices, and a great selection. This store is no exception; I've found a number of treasures here over the years. I stop by about once a month when I'm driving from Kansas City to northern Chicago, or when we're visiting family in Northern Illinois, so I've visited it quite regularly. I don't always find something I absolutely must have, but I always at least find something.

I walked into this store expecting a book store but I was delighted to discover an expansive selection of video games old and new, cd's, records, cassette tapes, and board games. Even with all the selection they still have an expansive book selection. I bought a fairly priced Wii game (Lego star wars the complete saga) it was only 10$! I'm planning on coming back soon to buy some more games and I'm so excited.

Never disappoints! Able to pick up 6 kids books, several vintage books, and some sci fi for $25.

They carry a fantastic collection of reading material. Plus they have gifts, DVDs, CDs, albums, and more.

Super clean store and always plenty of staff on hand to help.

I love the great variety of books available at Half Price Books. I like that they will buy books that I have culled out from my overloaded bookshelves. The diet is very tidy and well organized.

I love this place when I’m in the market for a new book. My favorite thing to do when I’m not sure what I’m looking for is to meander through the isles and pick up the books with the most beat up spines and it never disappoints. The books here tell stories (no pun intended), and a few of them have even had sweet little notes from the people who gifted them. My husband and I go here once every couple months on a date night to pick out books and dvd’s. It’s clean, and it never disappoints
