My husband went from the hospital to the MercyOne Clive Rehabilitation Hospital following his knee surgery. The nurses, therapists, and staff were outstanding. The kitchen started the day off with a hot, appetizing breakfast in time for him to prepare for his therapy sessions. Therapists definitely know their jobs. He had to begin a specialized infusion and the nurses fully explained the procedure. Any medical issues were handled promptly. We were amazed by the professional, caring and friendly treatment he received throughout his stay. Kudos for an outstanding facility.

My husband was in for a stroke, his left arm and leg were not functioning when we arrived. Between the physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists, he was cared for in every way! They encouraged him and pushed him to do the best he could. The nursing staff was awesome! Very personable, they cared about my husband as a person not just another patient, as did the therapists. I would recommend this place to anyone!

What a blessing it is to have access to an exceptional facility and staff. 4 weeks ago our life was turned upside down when my dad had a stroke. Our local hospital recommended MercyOne Clive Rehabilitation Hospital and we are grateful they did. The staff is compassionate, knowledgeable and thorough in their evaluations, treatment, therapies and care. They get to know their patients and able to assess how to challenge them while not breaking their spirits. Dad was discharged today walking on his own with a walker!!! Something I didn’t think could be accomplished in 3 weeks time!

After the roller coaster emotions of a life changing stroke this facility is a great place. A day and one half after the original stroke my right arm and leg lay motionless at my side.
There was no grip in right hand with no guarantee of getting movement back. By the time I reached Mercy One some movement was gradually and slowly coming back. Dr. Golesh and Dr. Oben came daily to update and answer questions. My main occupational therapist name was Brook and was helpful in knowing what muscles to use so I did not train my brain bad habits. I learned your brain can rewire new pathways after a stroke. The tendency was to compensate by using shoulder muscles to lift unresponsive arm and sometimes unnecessarily straining my back muscles for other movements. He also reminded me to breath so I do not pass out which actually occured one day during therapy. A trainee named Kaylie, supervised by Taylor, was my main physical therapy team. They both helped me to walk, climb, stairs and even electronically stimulated my right foot and toes to wake up. Kaylie nick named me Eager Beaver and had to remind me daily to wait for her go and not to abandon my walker. Actually, my memory was bad pre stroke and I was used to moving quickly on my job. I do actually have a brain they found one there in the two previous cat scans and an MRI. A little sarcastic humor was helpful to brighten the days and one therapist named Greg promised they would not roll me over a cliff to show me how to recover from a fall. I did reach a goal of being Independent but driving and work will have to wait (the DOT suspended my license). The therapist helped me to set realistic goals and I do believe one day I am going to lose this walker and get back to some kind of work.
I do not remember every nurses name but they were helpful and encouraged me during the biggest trial of my life. I know this is a job for them and they encounter new situations and patients often and move on to help others as they helped me. But for me they helped me through an enormous change in my life. Mercy One was a home for fifteen days (it seemed like forever). I will remember what each of them did for me with a special place in my heart.

Stroke Update:

June 15, 2023 Stroke occurred 8pm (Went to Lutheran transferred to Methodist same night)

June 17 7am that Saturday morning suddenly lost movement in right arm and leg (no finger or toe movement).

June 22 - July 8 Mercy One Rehab Clive (details above)

July 23 - Sept 12 Outpatient Rehab Mercy One Riverside downtown (worked on balance, kicked walker and less drag in right foot) Left walking a mile or more without walker or assistance. My right hand grip was now stronger than my left.

Sept 5 - Regained driving privileges in three months instead of six.

Sept 15 - Originally had planned to resume work as a window cleaner starting on lower level ranch homes but the delay from minor basil skin cancer cell surgery pushed things back. The week delay screwed up my plan and had to start on high ladder job which required being on high pitched roof. It worked out okay.

Oct 10 A sleep test detected 80 episodes of not breathing for 10-15 seconds in one hour. Thought I slept very well and had no idea I had sleep apnea. This could have contributed to stroke and now use a CPAP machine. Had a heart monitor during the month of August and my heart was good (they found no atrial fibrillation which can also cause stroke).

Feb 22, 2024 Over 8 months have passed since my stroke and most people would never know I had a stroke. I still take blood pressure medications but have been working again for five months now.. Climbing ladders, straddling deck rails, and walking high pitched roofs are no problem. I will turn 61 in three days. My stroke was in the brain stem. I do not want to give false hope because I was told that every stroke is different. I also understand people have different goals. Hopefully this update will encourage and let you know improvement is a possible.

I had great care in my rehab after two TBIs. And the staff was excellent. I was able to walk again by the time I was released. They took very good care of me and made sure everything was perfect. So glad to have a facility that can care for patients as well as they did. After cre my wife was able to continue my recovery with the excellent instructions that were given. Would recommend to anyone needing rehabilitaions of all kind. Excellent service even with a smile. Great job staff and rehab specialists, nursing and all. Food was excellent also.

This facility is excellent! I can not say enough good things about the staff and facility. The staff’s dedication sprinkled with humor and encouragement is the reason why we had such an excellent outcome after a stroke. This program should have top billing in Mercy’s family. An excellent choice for rehab.

Everyone here is very friendly. They achieved my goals that I wanted. The food was delicious. Everyone of the staff was very friendly and there was not one thing I asked that wasn’t answered. Even the housekeeping staff was great. I loved that I had a private room, and the room and floor was cleaned everyday, as well as the trash taken out. The therapists were knowledgeable and hands on. The therapy sessions are usually around an hour. The nurses are very personable and I was able to joke around with them. The call lights were answered promptly. I like the board in the room with the updated date and therapy schedule. The transition home will go smoothly because they’ve assisted in making arrangements with home care and making sure I have all I need, like phone numbers for doctors etc. The facility is very beautiful and comfortable and they have a really nice area outside.

I was just released week and half ago. I can only say good things. My stay was perfect. All of the nurses, techs and doctors were great. Also, the food was very good. I definitely recommend Mercy One Rehabilitation Center.

I do want to warn people that when they come to hospital to talk you into coming to rehab hospital, you are charged $301 without being told. Medicare will not pay this. It is a rip off.

My experience here was incredibly positive. The staff, therapists, and nurses are incredibly helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. They know just what to do to help you reach your goals and even surpass them. They are great communicators and explain concepts and processes simply in ways I would understand them. The food is great and the rooms are clean and spacious.

My name is Stephanie and my mom Kathy had a massive stroke in April 2022. She spent 12 days in the hospital, most of them in the ICU before transferring to Mercy acute rehab in Clive. Her stroke left her with right side paralysis, a feeding tube, and unable to speak at all. She was diagnosed with global aphasia which affects all forms of language. In her 3.5 weeks there, she learned how to eat again. She also began reading, writing and speaking!!! Music therapy was used and she is still progressing today. Her cognitive function improved tremendously. She still has paralysis, but this is all very normal only just over a month out from a major stroke. Dr Golish was polite, kind, funny and explained things in ways we understood. The nurses and countless therapists who worked with her were all amazing. They explained what they were doing and why and how we could help. They answered our questions. She was cared for well during a time no one has enough staff. She is now continuing her recovery at On with Life. I recommend Mercy acute Rehab for anyone who has had a stroke who wants rigorous therapy option (3 hours per day) to try to make improvements as quickly as possible. They are wonderful.

This was a perfect place for my mom. She had extraordinary rehab from the first day. The staff (nearly a small army!) met every need and beyond. Thanks to the nursing staff at Mercy One who recommended her stay here.

After nearly a two week stay, I am ready to go home thanks to the staff at Mercy Rehabilitation Center. The Occupational Therapy and the Physical Therapists are top notch. They were compassionate, knowledgeable, and most importantly they make sure you are ready to physically go home. Katie, Corine, Derek, L.L., and so many more therapists that helped with everything from simple household chores to important lifesaving physical techniques to learn and use for a lifetime.

The nursing staff; caring, knowledgeable, and humorous when needed. Helping hands, caring hands, and knowledgeable about meds and dosing. Many have become friends through tears and laughter.

MercyOne Rehab provided the most comprehensive plan for my recovery following a bicycle accident. The OT and PT staff was thorough, inventive and helped me problem solve for my health, well being, and daily activities. I never dreamed that I would need these types of services and was in awe of all they had to offer me. The nurses and CNAs provided in room comfort and concern whenever needed. For nearly a week I was in a one to one program where I needed to be fed because I had broken both of my elbows. I couldn't believe it, when one day chatting with the person feeding me I discovered she was actually the CEO. What a stellar organization that leads from the top down. Everyone at this facility is focused on patient care and growth. I would highly recommend MercyOne Rehab to anyone who needs their services. I am better now having been there and am optimistic about my development moving forward.
