Neither one of us had been to a bed and breakfast before, so weren’t so sure what to expect. But, this was a refreshing change from the typical hotel experience. The location was perfect! We parked the car on Friday and didn’t have to use it all weekend. So convenient to everything. We will definitely be back! Thank you!😊

I was on my way back from Blue Hill to NJ and decided that Portsmouth would be a great place to meet maritime history and so I did. My Choice for this visit was this gem! very comfortable located just a few steps to historic and beautiful downtown with tons of great restaurants and bars.
The Sailmaker's House was a perfect choice. Clean, very comfortable beds. Totally enjoyable with all amenities you can wish for. And easy to communicate with! Thank you!

This is a great little place in an old historic home. The rooms are very small but comfortable. The real value lies in its awesome location, just a 5 minute walk away from all the shops and restaurants in downtown Portsmouth.

The Sailmaker’s House has an unbeatable location right in downtown Portsmouth very near stores, restaurants, etc. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re clean and cozy. The bathroom was well-lit and spotless. Be advised, in case you have a second floor room, that the stairs are steep. Overall, it’s definitely an older building, so the design reflects that (smaller common spaces, twistier hallways than you might be used to). For us, the old New England feel was a charming plus, but might not be everyone’s cup of tea. The house still seemed to get plenty of natural light and was quiet, too. We mostly couldn’t hear other guests. We didn’t interact with staff in-person, it was all done by email and text. That said, those interactions were pleasant and prompt, and we really enjoyed our stay.

This hotel was amazing!! We stayed for a quiet weekend and found it to be super close to downtown Portsmouth. We had a car, but basically walked the entire trip since everything was within 2-10 minutes walk. The room was incredibly cozy and clean. They even left us flowers because we were celebrating an important occasion! Truly can't recommend this place enough and would love to comeback during the summer!

This trip was our second time staying at The Sailmakers House and again it did not disappoint. Their communication is top notch, the ease and convenience of self check in is stress free and simple. As a bonus there is a nice area for tea/coffee and snacks as well as a refrigerator to store leftovers. The location is a very quick walk to all the shopping and eating. Highly
Recommend if you’re looking for a weekend getaway.

Charming hotel in a perfect location to explore Portsmouth. Thoughtful touches with the decor and art reflecting the environs. Thoughtful touches like complimentary coffee, water, breakfast and afternoon snacks AND heated bathroom floors. Beds are super comfy with quality linens. Above all, the staff is incredibly warm, personable and professional. Thank you Michaela, Lexi, Cam and Tony for a great holiday stay.

Really enjoyed our stay at the hotel Thaxter this week. The staff was warm and welcoming. Very helpful. The location was perfect just around the corner from Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club. The room was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. We Will definitely be returning!

The inn is well kept up, with a fresh feel to the rooms that remains connected to the history of the house. All communications about parking and recommended places to eat were clear and extremely helpful. You cannot beat the proximity to downtown sights and shopping. If future plans bring me back to Portsmouth I would definitely stay again.

Sailmakers was a great option for my husband and me for our stay in Portsmouth. It was quiet and cozy, clean and welcoming, and features nice little extras like a coffee/snack area, a small common area with nice music piped in, and ample suggestions on where to go to eat.

Our room was great—comfy bed, great bath products, water, coffee, tea and snacks 24 hours in common area…a place to sit with gentle music. It’s a very old building…with quirks that only added to the ambience. Can’t beat the location…walkable Portsmouth—a great town.

We can't say enough about The Sailmaker's House... My (now) wife and I bought out The Sailmaker's House for our wedding weekend in Portsmouth. We had a total of 10 couples between us and our wedding party/immediate family and TSH could not have been more perfect for us (10 private rooms). The house itself has tons of character, and each room is well appointed -- all fully outfitted with its own bathroom. The common space was perfect for us to gather in, as well. We had zero issues during our 2 nights at TSH. Its location to downtown is second to none. TSH provides on-site parking.

Finally, our point of contact, Michaela, is a true MVP. We started working with Michaela a little less than a year out from our wedding weekend and she truly went far above and beyond to make our weekend extra special. She's an enormous asset to TSH and the extended J Group Team. We could not be more grateful for all that she did for us in advance and during our stay.

We would highly recommend TSH for an individual stay and/or a buyout. We'll certainly be back.

With many thanks,
Michael + Sarah

My husband and I spent our last night of vacation here and what a treat it was! The room and common spaces were so cutely appointed, with such an eye for detail in the decor. Linens and pillows were extremely comfortable; bath products were lovely. The lobby offered coffee in abundance of flavors, as well as free snacks and oatmeal for breakfast. The lobby area had many curated suggestions for things to do around Portsmouth. Staff was welcoming and friendly. Would love to come back!

The location is spot on! A couple streets away from the center of town makes it accessible, but also quiet and peaceful. The beds are extremely comfortable. The coffee/tea and snack station are a great touch. The check in is so easy. Great place to stay!

Centrally located. Great rooms. Very comfortable beds.

I left a shirt behind after I had checked out and they promptly mailed it to me.

We just got back from a two night stay at The Sailmaker's House.
We had a wonderful trip with two other couples.
Self check in and self check out was easy and great!
Rooms are very nice and clean. Beds are very comfortable, shower was great and love the stone floor of the shower! Love all the attention to details. There was a hand written Happy Birthday note with two delicious macaroons. We also received a call to ask if we wanted vouchers to a jazz and blues show, which we LOVED, great musicians from Chicago, cool venue!! That was all on our arrival day!
The coffee, tea, water and snack table was a nice plus. We enjoyed sitting in the common room at the end of our night for a little while and meeting there in the morning for coffee before we started our day.
The location of the Inn is the BEST!! We walked everywhere, to dinner, shopping, had a great couple mile walk in the park near by and could see the naval shipyard across the way and read about some history about it along our walk.
Their breakfast, lunch and dinner tips were appreciated.
We had a great stay and can't wait to return!!

Sweet little downtown spot. The home is from the 1800s and it feels very historic, but the room we stayed in was updated and comfortable, as was the bathroom. It was walking distance to everywhere we wanted to go. The bed was very comfortable, plenty of pillows. Very clean.

I didn’t pay much attention to the emails I received before check in so I was surprised by the self-check in. But I ended up liking how private it was to be able to let myself in and out without saying hello to anyone. I also used the shared sun room to work on my computer for a bit.
