St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 in New Orleans is a captivating and historic burial ground that offers a glimpse into the city's rich cultural heritage. As I wandered through its winding pathways, I was struck by the beauty and atmosphere of this unique cemetery.

The architecture of the tombs and mausoleums is simply breathtaking, with intricate designs and ornate details that reflect the diverse cultural influences of New Orleans. From elaborate above-ground crypts to simple grave markers, each memorial tells a story of the individuals laid to rest here.

One of the highlights of my visit was the opportunity to pay my respects at the final resting place of notable figures from New Orleans history, including musicians, politicians, and other prominent residents. It was a humbling experience to stand in the presence of such influential individuals and reflect on their contributions to the city.

Throughout the cemetery, I also encountered beautiful displays of local flora and fauna, adding to the tranquil ambiance of the surroundings. The peacefulness of St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 provided a welcome escape from the bustling streets of the French Quarter, allowing me to contemplate life and mortality in a serene setting.

Overall, my visit to St. Louis Cemetery No. 2 was a memorable and enriching experience. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply seeking a moment of reflection, this historic cemetery is a must-see destination in New Orleans.

Saint Louis Cemetery number two is not intended to be a tourist attraction, rather the final resting place of many New Orleans citizens. It is kept locked because of numerous incidents of vandalism over the years. Clearly it is a place that begs interest. Fortunately a section is visible through the iron fence and the large iron gates. This is a great example of the local practice of burying people above ground in what has been referred to as Cities of the dead.

I have always had a thing for the macabre and cemeteries. New Orleans has some of the best. Sadly, they close the gates to some locations very early. Most are done through walking tours. There tends to be potential crime in the area at night.

Highly recommend coming on a cemetery tour here. You can see several tombs of interest including Marie Laveau, Pierre Antoine Lepardi Jourdan, and of course... NICK CAGE (the pyramid...). Lots of history here.

Great cemetery with a lot of history.
It is very calming to walk around and read all the headstones.

This is cemetery #2, which is free to enter. Marie Laveau had three tombs according to legend and one is located here which again, is free to see.

Beautifully peaceful, super clean. No crowds and best of all you don’t need a tour guide to visit

I visited the St Louis cemetery number 2 and I was amazed by the history and beauty of this place. The tombs are very old and some of them are very ornate and impressive. I learned a lot about the people who are buried here, such as the voodoo queen Marie Laveau, who was a famous and powerful priestess in the 19th century, and Nicolas Cage, who has a pyramid-shaped mausoleum that stands out among the other tombs. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining, and he told us many stories and legends about the cemetery and its inhabitants. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience a different side of New Orleans and learn more about its culture and history.

Three "blocks" of above ground cemetaries. There are a few astonishing monuments along with some cairns that have decayed to a pile of bricks. Nice place, but it closes early (3pm).

Unique and humbling. These cemeteries give you an eerie feeling, but they're definitely intriguing.

Amazing place with a lot of cool history. Do yourself a favor and do some research about how these cemeteries worked historically and today. It really helps provide context.

St Louis cemetery has been split up and all seem to be within walking distance of one another. Me and some friends were looking to pass some time and initially went to St Louis 1. We found you could only enter with a 20 dollar guided tour. As we just wanted a quick stroll around we decided this wasn't for us and took a quick walk to St Louis 2 where there is free entry. It was a nice cemetery, some of the tombs have fallen in and have been left as a pile of rubble. Others (the ones who have paid for the constant care of the tombs) are well kept and in good condition.

This cemetery is free to visit. If you find yourself getting charged, you are in the wrong place. We found this cemetery very intriguing. The history is incredible. For those who say cemeteries are not tourist attractions, I will only hope that hundreds of people visit my resting place after I die. It is unfortunate the state some of the vaults are in, but I believe most of it is age over vandals.

Great place with a lot of history. Amazing. You have to have a guide to see this place now due to all the defacing and destruction caused by tourists 😞. Great company does an 1.5 hour tour called Save Our Cemetery's. Lots of security and police. No filming is allowed AT ALL. This place is fragile, watch your step. Look for Nicolas Cages' pyramid.

The beauty of these resting places never fails to touch me. Dead but never forgotten! Every time I visit here I learn something new and am so glad this cemetery is still open to the public at no charge, unlike St. Louis cemetery no. 1 where you have to pay a tour guide just to go inside :(

Each time I visit New Orleans, I always make sure to take a tour in Saint Louis Cemetery! It's so beautiful and so much history! You have to go early in the morning because any later than that, it is very hot. In any case, this is a must when in the Crescent City!

This is the cemetery to visit in New Orleans. It has a lot of history in it and a great atmosphere. A tour isn't necessary, you can find decent ones online to follow - or just drop the names into Google.

Even in it's unkempt condition it is intriguing because of beautiful details. Carvings, ironwork(wrought&cast), epitaphs and, of course famous people including a real pirate! His name was Dominique You. His epitaph is one of my favorites and perfect for a pirate! It says,"An intrepid warrior on land or sea. He could witness the endings of the earth without trembling". Of course it is in French on the tomb. There is a later plaque with the translation.
