Breaking Bread - Crystal Lake

This charming sandwich shop is a MUST for anyone traveling or living in Illinois! We went there for our first time just after Christmas and had an Outstanding rueben and Scrumptious turkey club. The owner, Chris, even checked up on us and chatted for a bit. Such a Great restaurant and experience!! We're heading back after new years to enjoy more quality food!

We popped in on Johnny Appleseed Day to just grab a bite on the way out of the downtown festival. We walked in at 4pm and and little did we know they also closed at 4pm and we're shutting everything down for the day. They still took our order and it was still amazing even when they didn't have too. It was fantastic even though they were closing up shop for the day. I always recommend this place, good stuff fast and great people!

So happy we have this fresh option right downtown Crystal Lake. Getting off the train and grabbing dinner super easy. They make a really great sandwich, but their cinnamon rolls are amazing!

I’ve lived in Crystal Lake for about 5 years now, and Breaking Bread has my favorite rueben, hands-down. Meat and kraut are what you’d expect, but this place really shines with the cheese and bread. Delicious melty swiss and fluffy rye with a nice, exterior crunch. The 80s dad-rock playlist is a plus for me, and my gluten-free partner highly recommends their celiac-safe options. Crystal lake staple.

I love the Juicy Beef Sandwich. Their burgers are great and my favorite side is their onion rings. I also really enjoy their pickles which are throw away at most places. My kids always get their burgers and always enjoy them.

Breaking Bread is a hidden gem! I had the turkey club and my husband had the tuna. Both were phenomenal and enough to fill you up. The homemade chips were delicious and the dill sauce that comes with it was amazing. We'll definitely be back and refer everyone we know here.

We went in for lunch and got a Chicago style hot dog, spicy chicken sandwich, and the chili mac. We were pleasantly surprised; everything was very good. The chicken sandwich had a very good breading and sauce, and the chili was hearty with a good flavor. I'm looking forward to going back and trying more food!

How did I not know about this place? Northwest Herald Readers' Choice Award - voted 2021 best caterer and sub shop. I heard through the grapevine that I had to try this place out. I went here for lunch. I ordered the classic cheeseburger with fries and a soda. It was made to order, very fresh, and very tasty. The steam was coming off of the burger and fries as I ate them. The lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions were all prepared fresh on the cheeseburger. The menu is vast but categorized in a way that is simple to navigate. They have a little bit of everything here for everyone.

The restaurant is clean and the people who work here are friendly. I had a conversation with the cashier over-the-counter about the menu as I chose my meal. He was informative and even went into the back room to bring out an associate in order to discuss my gluten allergy with me to ensure that I would pick a meal that would benefit me and avoid an allergic reaction. It was total above and beyond service.

I'm excited to come back here for another meal.

Best turkey club and homemade chips! Great addition to downtown Crystal Lake!

For a small little sandwich shop this place is fantastic. They do an excellent job on a number of sandwiches and is one of my favorite lunch spots.

One of the best Ruben's in McHenry county.

Our Reuben and Italian sub sandwiches on the gluten free bread were wonderful! Young one enjoyed the hot dog and the pickle! Sweet potato fries were great!

BB has a very extensive menu, the veggie on Foccacia is good, but what really stands them apart from your average deli shoppe is definitely their home chips with house dill sauce. Sliced just the right thickness and perfectly fried.

Nothing bad to say about the place. Their hot dogs are much better than Tommy's, their chili is great as well, their curly fries are awesome, AND they have free delivery. Not to mention the people are always nice, and the owner comes out and chats if he's at the CL location. Great team and great food. My only suggestion would be to include a combo that allows for curly fries and a large drink instead of the medium.

My girlfriend and I eat out quite a bit. This place blew us away with its low pricing and phenomenal food. We have visited multiple times and try something new every visit. Everything on the menu is unique and delicious. The food is reason enough to keep you coming back but the staff is some of the most friendly and personable I have ever met. You can tell they really care about every guest that enters. In addition to being a great taste, low-cost food given to you by the friendliest staff in town they also give free delivery if going out isn't an option. Breaking Bread has everything that makes a perfect restaurant and then some. If you haven't given them a visit you need to.

Was wanting a hot sandwich for lunch. This popped up in our search. Food looked and sounded good. It was fantastic. Quick and friendly. They have a gluten-free option for most things. Will be going back.

My wife, a friend, and I tried Breaking Bread for the first time as we were looking for a mom and pop shop for deli. I am ecstatic with our decision as the food was delicious and the service was excellent and friendly. Will definitely recommend to friends and family the next time they come to visit. Great job Breaking Bread as you have a customer for life.

Ordered off of Grub Hub simply because the place I wanted didn't deliver. Absolutely loved it!! Ordered for my whole family: sandwiches, salads, macaroni and cheese, chips and dill dip- It was all great!! Everyone ate their dinner (even my picky eaters). This has been put at the top of my list of places to order from. Yumm!

Nice little sandwich shop with great bread and an extensive menu. Special was a Cuban sandwich that had fantastic roast pork. Order was warm and ready for pickup on time after ordering online. Would definitely recommend.
