I heard a lot about this place, and its award-winning chicken sandwich. I decided to try it out myself, and was a little surprised to see that they were housed in a gas station/convenience store. I expected it to be its own restaurant, but it is really cool that they’re very popular in this way. We ordered online, because we were coming from a ways away. I ordered the SHK Classic Fried Chicken Sandwich, which comes with cheese and dilly pickles. I ordered pasta salad as the side, which was the worst part of my meal (which is fine). They put some sort of herb in their pasta salad (which I think should actually be called macaroni salad), I think it was basil, that overpowered the whole salad and was not tasteful to me. The sandwich, though, was incredible. I can definitely see why this place is so popular! I would visit again.

Out on a Saturday morning on the west side of Asheville and hungry for a good breakfast? Need to gas up your vehicle and your bone mech in one fail swoop?Drive up for gas at the BP on Sardis Road and there is a fantastic restaurant inside. Sand Hill Kitchen has turned into a solid food spot and you are going to get some solid food inside. 👌 Breakfast at Sand Hill Kitchen is one of the hidden gems you'll find in local gas stations. I had already finished a first breakfast and decided to go full hobbit and have a second breakfast since the wife showed up with SHK.

The wife and I shared their SHK Special Breakfast Burrito which has bacon, home fries, eggs, cheese and mayo. I was just gonna have a bite but the bacon hit me and the burrito disappeared like magic. It was well balanced, loads of eggs, bacon, and home fries inside. (Some of the bacon had a tough outer rind that was inedible but that was the only downside to it)

We also had an order of their biscuits and gravy which consisted of a large homemade square biscuit that was soft and buttery; and an unhealthy amount of sausage gravy (kidding of course, give me all the gravy!!)That gravy was divine and had a great deep flavor due to what I figure was a good roux and was well balanced with salt and pepper.

100% will be back to try the burrito picantè and get another order of the Biscuits and Gravy. Sand Hill Kitchen also has lunch/dinner... so I may have a new grub spot for sandwiches.

4.7/5

Breakfast: This is by far the best breakfast biscuit I have had in the South east, and the Bowl of Goodness is amazing to boot. Lunch: Best Reuben in town, but I just had their fried chicken sandwich with homemade chips and homemade pickles, wow was it amazing. Check their hours before showing up so you can plan ahead.

This is the kind of place that makes me excited to run through the menu. I take a methodical approach, repeating the same item several times until I feel I have sufficiently understood the nature of the offering. The buffalo chicken sandwich is one of those flavor islands you don't mind being washed up on. The care and skill in preparation is evident even before the first bite. The sauce is a respectful homage to Crystal that all fans of this most delicious hot sauce will enjoy. Once settled in to the sandwich, the freshness of ingredients immediately stands to the front. Lettuce is green and flavorful, and tomatoes are red and taste like they were picked out of the backyard garden. Smile-inducing dilly pickles have a fresh flavor and crunch that sets the sandwich apart. Housemade chips are not to be underestimated. These are perfectly browned to perfection and taste like a potato should. The crunch is as loud as the flavor. I ordered some ranch to dip them in and am convinced this is one of the most delicious house ranches I have ever tried. It's thick, but just right, and tastes farmhouse fresh with a pop of flavor. I will be unlocking more gems of Sand Hill soon and hope you share this special place too and take care of these talented folks who work hard to bring us this goodness so consistently.

Update: Let's talk about breakfast burritos and grit cakes. On one side of the burrito, a gorgeous seal of browned cheddar is expertly applied. Inside is scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage (or both!), home fries, cheddar, and herbed Duke's in a flour tortilla. A most stout, portable breakfast fit for the gods.

Let me tell you, once you bite into one of these triangular cakes from the outer realm, you will be transported to a place of pure warmth and comfort. The crispy coating on the outside provides a most pleasing structure and hand feel, and when you bite into one, it's cheesy grit bliss. I firmly believe this item pulls the whole country together. No matter if you are a born and bred local or a midwesterner whose idea of grits is malt-o-meal, this is the great equalizer. A perfectly self-contained flavor slam that feels as good for you as it tastes.

I often order the specials here as they are actually special, not just something they need to move!

Desserts are off the chain delicious and vary from day to day. There's always something new on the table.

Service is excellently executed: quick, accurate, and delightful.

There are only a handful of restaurants in town that understand that people want food that's not just tasty but filling, nutritious, well-textured, affordable, and served with a cool mountain vibe. Other restaurants in town take note of the core values that make SHK work.

Friendly staff and great food! My fiancé enjoyed his buffalo chicken sandwich and I absolutely LOVED the vegetarian beet sandwich! The pickup window was a nice touch as well.

My favorite restaurant that I very rarely get to visit.

This place's food consistently wows. The best burger, fried chicken sandwich, and BLT I have found in the city of Asheville. I just wish I had the time and lived close enough to visit more frequently. This is a real gem of a place, and the fact that it is in a gas station gives it even more points in my book. No frills, just consistent seriously good food. One of my absolute favorites, and some of the best service I have had at counter-type restaurants. Always happy to see you, and always happy to help. One comment, though: PLEASE get stickers back!

My family stopped for lunch and had the chicken sandwich, burger, and sides. Everything was great: the mains, chips, potato salad, the service, all of it. The folks behind the counter really nailed it! Standing there waiting for our to-go order, it looked like most of their business was call-in or to-go, which is good since there are just a few tables for dine-in. We will be back!

Fantastic food! The Fried Chicken sandwich is a winner, and they make the best Reuben in the Asheville-area.

Salads are fresh and crisp. And the breakfast burrito is big enough for Godzilla. Definitely a must eat in Candler!

I only give the atmosphere a 4 b/c the restaurant is attached to a gas station, but the best food is always in places like this in my experience.

Best chicken sandwich in Asheville and maybe the entire south?! It's unreal how good their buffalo sandwich and chips are! Obviously the atmosphere is lacking due to it being in a gas station but I feel like the lack of aesthetic just adds to the fact that Sand Hill Kitchen is no nonsense and focused on one thing - the quality of their food. The service is also great!

I went back. I had to try the fried chicken sandwich or I wouldn't in good conscious be able to vote in AVL today's best chicken sandwich in Asheville bracket.

Since I went wild with Rocky's I felt it was acceptable to go wild on this, so I got the buffalo chicken sandwich with pickles. It is a VERY good sandwich. These guys really know how to season. Despite the crust being soaked in buffalo sauce it still retained a bit of crunch and wasn't wet, the sauce enhanced the sandwich rather than distracting. The bun is excellent. The chicken had flavor all the way through. And you know their pickles are great.

Voting is going to be so hard.

Did I order incorrectly? Yes. Did this in any way ruin my review? Not at all.
These folks are known for their fried chicken sandwiches. I don’t love a fried chicken sandwich, I’d rather just have the fried chicken. Knowing this, I got the kitchen sink salad with fried chicken. This isn’t virtue signaling, I ordered cake, too.

For $10 the kitchen sink salad is a solid deal. Lots of fresh spring greens, and a truly bizarre mix of kitchen sink ingredients like sliced mushrooms, orange wedges, and cheddar cheese. It went great with the honey mustard dressing.

Pretty sure the chicken was from the day before and not freshly fried, but if that’s the case it’s an indicator how great their chicken would be fresh, because this was pretty great cold.

I also got the Boston cream poke cake. It tastes homemade, which to me is positive. The cake itself is a little heavy, it’s a huge slice, and the chocolate frosting is slathered on thick. Would I come here just for the cake? No.

Order online, pickup at via their pickup window on the side of the BP gas station store on the opposite end of the lot from the car wash. You CAN go inside and order in person but, don't. You don't need that extra step when it's so much easier to do it this way.

Side note: the other reviews are correct, their pickles are great. They’re super thin sliced cucumbers in (I assume) a quick pickle brine.

Will I be back for their daily special? You bet your boots.

Ordered a to go order. They accidentally left out my grit cakes and home fries. I didn’t realize until I started going through the bag. Before I could finish eating they called and offered me a partial refund or said I could come back and grab the items. That’s how you run a business. Great food, great integrity. Thanks again SHK!

I ordered the classic fried chicken sandwich with a side of buffalo sauce so I could try it with and without sauce. Excellent both ways and the bun is quality. The buffalo sauce was awesome…I’m thinking they make it, but not sure. My side was tomato basil salad which is fresh and you get sad eating the last tomato. Pickles are excellent. Slightly sweet
, but not too much. Great balance of vinegar and salt. Ordered extra for my ride home. Will definitely go back when traveling through Asheville. What a great find.

I had the fried chicken sandwich. The chicken didn't have any seasoning on it. It was tasteless until I added salt. Other than that, the service was great and the atmosphere was nice. The gentleman who took our order smiled a lot and that was even nicer. The way the world is today, great service and a good atmosphere is preferred. I would so recommend eating here.

My wife and I have been wanting to try this hidden gem for 3 or 4 years now and finally got the chance to try it. I got the winner burger and my wife got the fried chicken sandwich. Hands down, one of my top 5 favorite burgers and the chicken sandwich had to be in the top 3. This is a super unassuming spot but the food was ready on time and was absolutely amazing. Make sure to get extra pickles as they are addicting. We will definitely be going back when we're in Asheville again!

I'm going to focus on my favorite thing on the menu. If you're like me, you might enjoy a buffalo chicken sandwich. This is not "A" buffalo chicken sandwich. This is "THE" buffalo chicken sandwich, the Platonic ideal from which every other buffalo chicken sandwich in the world is derived. Others are but flickering shadows on the wall of the allegorical cave, dim simulacrums of the true sandwich. To eat this sandwich is to briefly escape the cave, and witness the resplendent surface world above. How can we then return to the cave and not resent the sordid, feeble reflections that exist there Wendy's)?

I recommend it with extra pickles

Being from New York, finding a great breakfast in a gas station isn't all that unusual. But this was a spectacular find!

Great bread, potatoes, sandwiches, and burritos were shared around our table and we couldn't stop sampling each other's selections. Make sure you try the herbed mayo!

My husband and I each got a chicken sandwich with potato salad for lunch from here while we were visiting Asheville from out of state. We agreed it was probably the best chicken sandwich we’ve ever had. So good!

Guy behind the counter was very friendly too!

Would absolutely come back if we are back in the area again!

The chicken sandwich is beyond phenomenal. Homemade chips with homemade ranch is the perfect accompaniment.
