Northern Waters Smokehaus

Delicious! Fast service and friendly staff. We always get the Cajun Finn sandwich and it is incredible every time. We make a stop here whenever we are in the area. The new basement remodel adds plentiful seating and a pleasant atmosphere. The bacon and deli/market area have an amazing selection. They always have delicious samples and new items they are creating.

Was traveling up to Lutsen so we had to stop at the favorite spot for a sammich, Northern Waters…

We were happy to see that they had relocated about 20 steps away in the same building.. Great new space and even space for tables to enjoy your food. They have a deli counter and a pickup counter with wine and beer options.

The food was just what I expected, GREAT!

We got the Slammin Gordon and Italianesk and both were incredible! Food is very fresh. Also they have the option of gluten free bread which is huge. Would definitely come back here!

One of my favorite restaurants in the area and the only place I want to go for a smoked salmon sandwich! Their new place in the basement has so much more room than when they had the upstairs takeout window, and there is plenty of seating.

We live in the Minneapolis area and we make it a point to stop at Northern Waters Smokehaus. We love their new (since Nov. 2023) location in the the lower level of the Dewitt-Seitz building. We can now enjoy our food in a comfortable setting.

We love the incredible options for sandwiches. There is sure to be a sandwich for everyone. I ordered the smokehaus club and it was phenomenal. Sorry, for only showing pictures of half the sandwich. It was so tasty that I already ate the other half.

Make sure you stop by the deli for fantastic smoked fish and meats.

I was incredibly happy to learn that they opened a dine in area in the basement! We visit Duluth a few times a year and hands down this is our favorite place to go to for lunch. Everything tastes fresh. We love getting deconstructed sandwiches to take home, too, and just can't seem to get enough! A few of our absolute favorites include Cedars Secret, Silence of the Lambwich, Pastrami Mommy, Slammin Gordon, and the Cajun Finn!

Get here now. New location and same fantastic food. The sandwiches are unreal. The flavor balance is fantastic. While they are most wonderfully known for their smoked salmon and their nova lox, they have GF, veg and vegan options as well. There’s nothing bad on this menu. They also feature local beers, have wine options, plus takeout and dine in options.

Their country pate sandwich (called the Hedonist) is fantastic, as is The 6 with corned bison and kimchi.

You can get any smoked fish plated with crackers and scallion cream cheese for the price of the fish (starting at $16/lb) + $4.50. Draft beers + canned/bottled drinks are available for $6-$7.

The food here is incredible!! The last time we stopped in we had gotten only some of the smoked meats from their deli, but on our most recent visit we also tried some of their sandwiches and they were SO GOOD. The smoked meats they sell are always great, and I haven't been anywhere else like this place. This is a must go if you are visiting Duluth!

Kinda stumbled upon this place and was pleasantly surprised. My favorite sandwich was the Big Dipper with porketta. I’m not a big fan of olives but the green olive is such a nice touch. Also love the hardhat with summer sausage. We returned the second day and got more summer sausage and smoked fish to go. Lunch time is super busy. Second day I got there 20min after they opened and there was no line (also a Monday).

I can not even begin to tell you how much I fell in love with the food here. Not a massive smoked fish fan, but I tried the Cajun smoked salmon and am completely hooked. Fast service even on a busy day, right in the middle.of canal park it's a great place to grab lunch. Don't forget to check out their deli as well!

It’s smart for a meat centric restaurant to provide vegan options.

I was able to stop in with an omnivore friend visiting from out of town. He said it was some of the best smoked meat he has ever had (smoked lake trout, elk sticks). He also enjoyed his Cold Turkey sandwich.

I myself enjoyed the vegan Spring Roll sandwich and was so happy to have something smoked too, tofu!

More importantly I’m happy to know of a place where I can bring friends and family and all of our preferences will be accommodated.

The new space is awesome, such a good use of the Dewitt-Seitz basement. Plenty of dine-in space, service was friendly, food was brought to our table quickly and every sandwich we ordered was delectable. We also purchased some andouille sausage and royale with cheese meat sticks. Andouille was perfect complement to our breakfast bowls the next day and the pork sticks made the perfect snack for us. Prices were very reasonable considering the high quality deliciousness of all of their offerings. Will gladly come back every single time I'm in Duluth.

If you’ve ever had the delight of smelling that enticing bouquet of smoked goodness in Canal Park, you were almost certainly smelling Northern Waters Smokehaus. In addition to traditional smoked fish (salmon, trout, etc.), Northern Waters also has smoked tofu, and their menu boasts a *killer* vegan option, The Spring Roll - the perfect balance of fresh, quality ingredients intertwined with smoky goodness and subtle heat. If you’re not vegan or vegetarian, this sandwich shop is better known for their smoked fishes and meats, and has something on the menu for everyone. Highly, HIGHLY recommend!

Logistical note: This sandwich spot is a huge attraction for locals and tourists alike; be sure to plan accordingly. It’s popularity means that you’ll likely be waiting a bit for your sandwich, but don’t worry - it’s well worth the wait!

Got the Sitka Sushi sandwich; smoked salmon with ginger, cucumbers and cilantro plus a delicious sauce. So good. They have beers, seltzers, THC beverages and non alcoholic too. Kitchen was shockingly fast for how busy they were. Modern/industrial well light eating area with no ambient music (yay) which is very needed since it’s got low ceilings and no noise dampening surfaces. They’ve got a wholesale deli area and their self bussing area has compost! Will definitely come here again

A small but very popular restaurant. We did a day trip up to Duluth and stopped by this restaurant. The salmons were pretty delicious and sandwiches were good too! Not too many seats outside at busy lunch time!

The quality of fish and service are like no other. Love the new space. Cajun Finn is my absolute favorite sandwich anywhere. It is fresh, healthy, and hearty. I could eat it everyday.

I’m from Minneapolis, and I’ve visited Duluth twice. Northern Waters is legendary among my friends, and everyone told us to visit Northern Waters when they heard we were visiting Duluth. The first time I visited, I ordered the clubhaus, because I’m not a huge salmon fan. It was pretty good, but my partner works at a sandwich shop in St Paul, and I prefer their Turkey club. The second time I visited, I decided to push myself, and I ordered a fish sandwich. I ordered the great summer caper, which was a stretch for me, because I’ve never had bagel and lox. It was absolutely fantastic. The flavors melded together perfectly, and I devoured it. My partner got the Cajun Finn with added cilantro and sriracha. I had a bite, and it was spectacular as well. Needless to say, I should’ve ordered fish from Northern Waters from the get go. I’ve never had such delicious salmon in my life. I’m a convert. I can’t wait to come back on my next visit!

I have been to this establishment multiple times and everytime it has been a very helpful and fun time. They have a smoked meat deli which has such a wide variety of delicious smoked meats from exotic ( Buffalo, elk, salmon, multiple fish, multiple bacons,....) but they will let you have a small sample to try before you buy. And everything they sell is worth it. Prices are reasonable. The effort they put into thier product is out of this world. Now let's talk about there sandwiches. AMAZING. Everytime I'm in Duluth, I need to stop here. Every sandwich is so delicious and I usually get two at a time just so I can get to try as many as possible. And never once have I been disappointed. Just makes want to turn around and get another. If I could give this place another star I would.

This place is phenomenal! After walking around Canal Park, we stopped here for lunch. The food is incredibly delicious. During the pandemic, they are only taking orders over the phone or online, but you can still seat nearby and enjoy your food. My sister and I got a table outside and just waited for about 15 minutes to get our food. They don't exactly alert you to when it's ready, but you can just check the finished orders outside their door. I highly recommend trying their sandwiches. They have a large variety of different flavors and styles!
