I love this place! I always get nigiri sushi or sashimi combined with something else like a bento or katsudon. It seems like they copy and pasted this store directly from Japan, it's legit.

The best time to get there is early while everything is stocked, OR at the end of the day when they start marking down the prices on everything they made that day. They only make so much of everything, and it runs out pretty fast most days.

Many places have raised their sushi prices quite a bit over the last few years, but Maruta's still has the cheapest and some of the best quality sushi/sashimi around. The nigiri sushi has big cuts of fish almost enough to cover the rice that's under it.

I highly recommend this place and wish I could find a place like this in the Tacoma or Puyallup area.

Japanese grocery store that has a Chinese hot lunch with maybe 6-8 entree options and your choice of fried rice or noodles. There are also hot Japanese fried items in the warmer like tempura shrimp, chicken wings, karaage and more. There are also warm dumplings, spam musubi and donburi bowls.
The refrigerator case has lots of sashimi, nigiri and rolls. Prices are very low so lots of folks stream in at lunch to grab and go. There are lots more items for an inexpensive lunch so come and check it out yourself. Oh, they also carry great pantry items from Japan like my favorite furikake and ramen. Did I mention the very reasonable prices?

Great quality fish for even better prices. The salmon poke don is filling and delicious and only $10. Additionally, the rolls are excellent and also a good value. All the employees are polite and friendly. There’s also a good selection of Japanese grocery products, but the prepared foods are the reason I make a weekly visit.

Maruta is a Japanese market right off of I-5 in the Georgetown area that should be on your list. They serve hot food as well as fresh sushi to go, and the quality, taste and price are amazing. I've been going here for years and it never disappoints. The staff here are so friendly, especially the ladies serving the hot food. There's a bunch of options which include bowls, fried food, stir fried items, and more. The sushi style items are made daily and fresh and are big portions. If you work down here or pass through, stop here as it's a must go to place to eat. You can even do some grocery shopping for home because they have an area for Asian influenced groceries as well.

We have been shopping there every Saturday for fresh sushi and bento box. There are other Japanese deli specialties like the pickled seaweed that we love. The sushi is as good as you will find made fresh daily. There's plenty of parking the prices are roughly half of what you would pay at a premium grocery like metropolitan or whole foods. I wish they would open in West Seattle! It's out of the way but worth the trip.

Update 7/1/2023
We bought sushi another treats for a picnic at Redondo Beach Park. The rice bowls with pork and egg, katsudon, we're such a good value that we bought extras for our weekday lunches. We bought bags of individually wrapped Japanese crackers snacks. Both of us will take to our offices. We spent $75 and we're so pleased with the value for money. What a great Seattle institution, Maruta Shoten!

AUGUST 16, 2023, I will go today for Soba noodles and Soba sauce. We've been enjoying this buckwheat ramen with its soy-like sauce, served chilled during the hot summer evenings. It's an off-the-beaten-path healthy carb dish to replace rice or potatoes.
I'm hoping that the deli will have the katsudon that my wife loves. It will be a treat for her dinner.

9/29/23 If you go late Saturday, expect the deli to be nearly sold out of fresh sushi. Popular!

12/8/23 Popped in for sushi and katsu don for dinner. The latter was packaged fresh and warm as I watched. $30+ for that and three trays of fresh, FRESH sushi. It's a good price compared with our other more mainstream options.

Arigato gozaimas Maruta staff.

My roommate told me how good the sushi was here and he wasn’t kidding! Super fresh and delicious. Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had honestly. I’m gluten free and there were a decent amount of options for me to choose from. Fun snacks and treats throughout the store as well. Inexpensive place to get GF panko/breading batter, sushi, and/or Nigiri for my gluten free friends!

Great little Japanese market and reasonable prices. The deli has a large variety of bento boxes, donburi and a nice selection of sushi. Also for such a little store I find their selection of Japanese goods much better. Definitely not a place for produce or fresh meat though.

Love this place! I love how underground and local this is, gotten there sashimi 3 times and each time has tasted fresh and buttery! They have this nice deal for 50% off at 4 which is such a lovely kick!

I found this great Japanese Supermarket using they Yelp Search tool. I arrived around 4 p.m. and checked out the relatively small but well-stocked grocery. I found a couple of nice bento's and proceeded to the checkout.

The super nice Clerk told me that if I could wait 3 minutes that the bento's would be 50% off. Now it explains why the Bento area was busy. I went back and said limit 3 per person so of course I bought a third one. Sure enough three bento's for about ten bucks, such a bargain!

Be sure to check out the sales on the flyer close to be entrance. The place is closed on Sundays but I'm looking forward to returning around 4 p.m. again to grab the half off bento's at 4:30! Strongly recommended. By the way, there's also a hot food area but it seems to close around 2 pm.

I often come here to shop when I want to eat Japanese food or when I need ingredients. The inside of the store is small, but the number of items is plentiful.
The daily lunch boxes and sushi here are diverse and delicious. Hot deli also available You can also buy croquettes and fried shrimp separately. I think it's convenient for you to buy and eat lunch or dinner in the hot summer. I think you can buy it cheaper than making it yourself.
After 5:30pm 50% off all bento and deli items. However, it may be sold out by that time. Don't forget to get a fork and chopsticks when you buy a bento or deli. Because it's just a take out only. No tables and chairs inside the store. There are many sale selections and it is a bargain.
For example; Vermont Curry sauce mix for $ 2.99, half the price.
I always buy a lot of things when I come here.
If you have a recycling bag, I recommend that you bring it with you.

I love MARUTA-SHOTEN and when I come here I feel like I'm in Japan.

The place to go for those ingredients you can’t find anywhere close by. Miso paste…mochi…better sushi than metro market or Safeway. Any plenty of snacks.

Real Japanese grocery store. Their packaged sushi is better quality and the piece of fish is more generous than Uwajimaya’s as a Japanese chef is making them. Lunch boxes are super, too. Personally, the ingredients are a little sweeter than I would like as I am from Tokyo. Southern Japanese cooking tends to be much sweeter and I think that’s where the kitchen staff must be from. They are nicest people and despite the limited space, they have good Japanese food selection. Love them!

Fantastic little market. I wasn't expecting there to be delicious fresh sushi. It's definitely better than the majority of market/grocery store sushi. They have a lunch rush, so you know it's a good spot

Stop by here for their lunch bentos, very affordable and delicious. Lots of variety to choose from: Grilled fish, chicken teriyaki, chicken Katsu, and a large selection of different types of sushi.

Who knew that the best Japanese food in Seattle would be in a deli hidden in a grocery store.👍

Good selection and pricing on Asian products. Freshly prepared hot or cold food; Sushi, bento box, poke, etc. Everyone was friendly and professional.

You won't find better Japanese take-out anywhere else east of Hawaii. Incredibly affordable deals on their regular-priced hot food items and sushi/sashimi plates and bentos, Maruta even has a "happy-hour" at 5pm-closing where all rolls, hot deli, and bento combos disappear off the shelves at 50% off! It always feels like they just made the food fresh from market ingredients, and their uniquely delicious flavors pack a punch. The Japanese staff are the kindest ever and their smiles might leave as strong an impression as the quality of their food and service do. I wish they had tables to sit and enjoy and its elusive as to why they don't already. Most likely because their private parking lot, tho ample for drivers coming and going, wouldn't fit the entire city who would come and want to stop to enjoy this gem of a Japanese Shokuryōhin-ten.
