This theater is one of the gems of Marin County. The variety of high quality movies and the number of directors, actors etc they bring in to discuss their work is amazing. One of the best bangs for your buck is a membership which will allow you to attend many screenings for free.

Excellent for non main stream movies. Plenty of movie options and times.

Small but very well stocked concession area.

Seats of the theater were great as was the sound and lighting of the theater.

Staff were helpful.

Went to see The Killer there. Great movie. The theater is nice. Very modern equipment with good screens and sound. Seats were average, but prices were fair. Snack bar small but adequate. Does not serve alcohol though. Public parking right around the corner. San Rafael has a very nice downtown area. Will definitely go back again.

Recent screening of Elvis and the conversation after the screening was notable perks of this theater. Excellent sound system to watch Elvis.

So many great and memorable films that I have seen here in the past 20 years.

The recent screening of “Circles” has provided me the part of Bay Area’s education related issues that I wasn't aware of much. It has given me the in-depth real life perspective on the social issue by the subject of the film and the film maker.
The Discussion and Q&A immediately following screening with the director & the subject of the documentary was wonderful opportunity for the audience who may many questions from the film.

What a great theater! Loved the art house vibe of it and the films they show. It's right in a fun section of downtown San Rafael!

Lovely indie theatre showcasing interesting films from around the world. Please support this theatre, it is a rarity left in the Bay Area film world, unfortunately.

One of the best of top quality Art film theaters and film culture centers (renowned for various film festivals, including the world famous Mill Valley Film Festival - now 40 years old), as well as Educational opportunities for youth in various aspects of film making. First release Feature films; and International, documentary, and quality independent films shown in a beautifully remodeled art deco theatre. Q&A's with filmmakers, actors, musicians, creative celebrities from around the world. Bravo to the Smith Rafael Film Center staff and volunteers!

The Rafael Theatre on 4th Street in downtown San Rafael is a favorite destination for film enthusiasts and movie goers. Incomparably wonderful in all respects!

I come to this place when I visit my daughter. I love the large selection of independent films. They're more like reading a good book with great character and plot development.
The venue is retro and has been lovingly restored and maintained. Relaxed atmosphere.

Great film, "A Radio Revolution" wonderful theatre to see a movie.

Friendly gracious staff, clean theater(no sticky floors here!), and concessions won't cost a boat payment like other theaters. Great popcorn!

I always love going to this beautifully restored cinema where they show great movies, both classics and new independent and foreign films.

This is a renovated theater with comfortable seats. This venue shows primarily "artsy" films.

I have been visiting this Theatre since I began visiting Marin before I moved here in the 1990's.

Smith Rafael has offered my family and friends and I so many wonderful film experiences that I couldn't remember all of them.
However, I have never had an experience there which I wasn't fond of.

Every great Yoga movie has been shown there.
And many excellent documentaries over the years have been held over by popular demand.

The staff is always friendly.
The space is neat and tidy.
The seats are pretty comfortable.

And the films are spectacular.
They keep the very rare and novel films and documentaries going continually so there are always excellent topics to choose from.

Best time there for a preview film, would come back
