Visited a while back. Went through my camera roll and found some pictures that really brought me back.

It's a really nice store. Never been in a bookstore quite like it. It's quirky and has a good selection of books if you're willing to look around. Reasonably priced with a great owner. He really fosters a community within Torrington.

I'll make sure to visit the next time I'm around the area.

Really nice place! The guy who runs it was super friendly and informed about what books he had. We had a nice chat with him. It's clear that the shop is still growing as it doesn't quite have the inventory to fill the place, but it's a great place to stop by nonetheless. Great atmosphere, reasonable prices.

John Howard’s bookstore is a must see spectacle for anyone traveling to, or living in the Northwest Hills of Connecticut. Formerly a shoe store that served the community for generations, Noelke has left much of the original interior intact, complete with historical artifacts; such as the original cash register, beautiful lighting fixtures, and even vintage shoes that were left behind, which he offers for sale. (I have bought a pair myself and can attest to their quality. They don’t make things like they used to!!) This lack of renovations only serves to heighten the stores charm.
The resulting effect is like stepping into a time capsule. The smell of vintage books a welcome breath of fresh air and refuge from our fast paced digital world. Noelke is a man of vision, and serves his community with an fiery passion. Not only does he simply offer books for sale, but he provides the community with a creative hub where musicians and artists can gather and perform. A place where serious intellectual discussion takes place and is encouraged..Every time I’m looking for a particular book he usually has it, and if he doesn’t he will track down a copy for me. Howard’s is a place like no other. Don’t pass up on the opportunity to explore its hidden treasures!

What a cool feel this spot has! Stopped here recently with my husband and found a great selection with reasonable prices. Had a lovely conversation with the owner, John. We were happy to support this small business. Be sure to checkout the website; he's got a kinds of events planned.

More than a bookstore! It was a trip through history. John is really brining life back into downtown Torrington! The place was an old shoe store which explains all the shoes! I am a strong believer that what makes a business is not just the product but the people selling it and John is so welcoming and you know right off the bat, he takes such pride in what he does and the town of Torrington! Haven't been? JUST GO! If you can, go early enough to walk around and visit the surrounding businesses!

Such a great place, with all kinds of books. I could look at books all day there find a nice little seat and read right there. Certain days people come down and jam. The owner is down to earth and knowledgeable. There's also shoes and other things for sale. Which is so neat. The nostalgia in the place is great. Definitely going back to purchase books and maybe listen to some tunes... You have to go down to Howard's to see for yourself. I'm more than positive you will have a good time.

Just left the bookstore. The owner was so nice. Left with several books and a very happy kid. Shop local and support this business.

Expansive and eclectic used bookstore set in an old shoe store. It's a trip through the golden age of retail and a treasure hunt at the same time. The owner John is a great guy too: friendly and compassionate.

I am excited Howard's has been purchased and is being turned into an art mecca of northwestern CT-- I had a great experience using multiple rooms in the building for two photo shoots and an online performance on the same day, which was convenient. The building manager Rana was helpful and friendly. I'm looking forward to seeing the future of Howard's when it's fully up and running; it's destined to become a not-so-hidden gem of NWCT.

Want character? The John Noelke Gallery on Water street has become a Torrington staple for art and diverse quality live events with low admission costs. Its Bohemian character is truly original and its laid back owner may be found seated in front on Water street, strumming a guitar, sharing his views or divulging a horse story that happened in Texas. The Noelke is a key player to Torringtons thriving Arts District. Note, future Noelke events will soon migrate around the corner to the Howard Building, currently under rennovation at the time of this post. Call for updates and future acts.

John Noelke is a breath of fresh air here in Torrington - he is a visual artist, a poet and and a cheerleader for humanity, so bring your pom-poms if ya got 'em. Provocative art in a great space! There is a SPEAKEASY every first Sunday evening of the month - it has a featured poet and an Open Mic. Best of all, it's a haiku-friendly environment. Mention JOHN BROWN and get a free hug!
