Shell Mound Unpaved Boat Ramp

A hidden gem for kayakers and nature lovers! Dolphins, crabs, fish, seabirds, and other wildlife can be found throughout the keys.

SW 78 Pl transitions to a sandy narrow road. Watch out for potholes and other drivers.

Boat ramp has a public restroom with limited amenities. Parking at the boat ramp is limited. Overflow parking available on SW 78th Pl. All parking is free.

Launched at 9:30 AM during low tide. A kayak cart was very helpful for this. Walked about 40ft from the ramp through muddy saltmarsh to get to deep enough water. Once you've launched, try to follow the water channels and you won't get stuck! Returned at 4:00 PM during high tide. Water depth was about 3 FT. No need to hike through the mud.

Sandy shores can be found on the west coast of Hog Island for picnicking and docking your vessel. A Dolphin was spotted between Hog Island and Mcclamory Key. Many spots for fishing.

Beautiful place! We haven't launched a boat here yet, only kayaks and canoes. Very calming, just gorgeous. You'll even see Dolphins. We love it here.

The Shell Mound area was interesting and educational with the plagues placed along the trail.

I love this place, my wife and I have been coming here since we were kids. So over 30 years.

I've always love it here, hard to launch anything other then airboat or kayak at low tide but if you launch at high tide and come back at high tide there's no issue if you happen to go out at low tide and have water boots to protect your feet you can walk to many of the smaller " shellbeds" sandbar. If you get the chance to kayak from here high island on the gulf side is really pretty there are a few other islands to the north that are worth checking out as well. Always check tides and current for safety and accessibility and enjoy what mother nature has provided 🥰

Awesome spot to launch a Kayak. Beautiful area full of Manatees, Dolphins and a variety of birds. Great access to fishing for all of your inshore species via Kayak or boat.

Great place for fishing or trail hiking

This place was great for us. We love learning and walking in the woods. Story boards abounded as you hike the trail. You are actually walking on the oyster shell mound as you take the trail. We started from the boat ramp area

The shell mound is a great place not a lot of boat traffic kayaks jon boats canoes are perfect for this location I've been going there for over 20 years one of my favorite places to go fish and just to enjoy nature the trails are also fantastic go out there and give it a try and see what you think just be careful of low tides when you go out and a boat.

Shellmound is made of oyster shells from long ago when Indians lived there that's what they ate it grew into a big Mound that you can now take nature trail hikes on. It is a very beautiful place it has appear to fish on public restrooms

One of the best places around to catch Black Drum and Redfish from the pier.

Has a lovely dark live tide you can walk out you can practically go out about 20 yards and get you some oysters the boat ramp there’s really only good for air boats don’t miss the time you might get stranded

Turns out the shell mounds were made from Indians who inhabit the place many many years ago. Neat place. They have a dock you can walk out on.

Great boat ramp! Water gets pretty shallow. Be careful if you go kayaking! I got stuck many times.

Plenty of parking. Very nice boardwalk with seating on the dock. Excellent for bird watching.

Best place for fishing the flats. Not a good ramp to use on low tide.
