My short stay was accompanied by amazingly friendly nurses that we could even joke with and sympathetic patients that made me feel welcome. It seemed like a pretty scary place when I was first told that's where i was being sent to, I was nice to everyone and eager to do anything to get out ASAP, one reason was because I had a band competition really soon. The doctors could feel my sense of urgency and could tell i was already wanting to change so they did what they could to get me in and out with something to come out of it. They eventually got me out a day before my competition where i got a 1st division, and I'm extremely pleased they let me out so fast and with a good therapist outside.

Edit: My stay was in April of 2016

My family and I experienced the outstanding level of dedication and care by the team at Seton Shoal Creek Hospital. Despite a tumultuous journey getting admitted to Shoal Creek, a close family member of mine received the care they needed in a time of need. Their care was led by Dr. McRoberts in consultation with three psychiatrists, and they had access to a social worker, an attending nurse, and a behavioral health tech during their eight-day stay.

Upon arrival, my family member was interviewed and evaluated by an admitting nurse who asked a series of questions about their health, their reasons for seeking care, and their background. They were given information about what to expect, and informed about the measures in place to protect the safety and wellbeing of every patient. After a thorough interview, the admitting nurse provided an intake report to the admitting physician and a treatment plan was initiated. I was able to stay with my family member until they were taken up to their room.

During hospital visiting hours, I made every effort to provide support to my family member by visiting when possible. Phones are available for patients, and at times, it was my experience that the patient preferred time to themselves during treatment. My recommendation is to speak directly with the patient and ask them what they'd prefer. If you do visit, please be prepared at security by leaving behind phones and purses/bags. Lockers are available for your belongings. Security is strict though cordial; remember that the security team is doing their best to care for their patients while minimizing every opportunity for self-harm. If you do decide to visit, be sure to check with the hospital on what items are allowed in for yourself and for giving to your family member. If you prefer to give the patient space, be encouraging on the phone and invite them to share in group sessions, to the extent that they feel comfortable.

While different patients may require different levels of care, I can say that my family member was always cogent and not under any sedation; nor were the patients around her. This to me spoke volumes because our primary goal was to seek care for an emergent cause, but to also chart a plan forward that allowed them to be functional in society. That's exactly the type of care they received at Seton Shoal Creek.

My family member is now enrolled in Intensive Outpatient Therapy as part of their recommended discharge instructions. They are on a medication that appears to be stabilizing yet functional, and their overall outlook on life has improved. It is for these reasons that I strongly recommend Seton Shoal Creek Hospital for anyone experiencing a mental health emergency or crisis. If you or someone you know is hurting and is ready to seek care, recommend Shoal Creek, and be well.

I went to this hospital under, what I considered, the most dire of circumstances. The care I received here was extraordinary. No, the food isn't great but I wasn't checking in to a 5 star hotel. I was there for help and that's exactly what I received here. Dr. Kjome and Dr. Dozier were some of the kindest physicians I've encountered in years. My social worker was Chris and he far exceeds any Social Worker I've met. The staff is also outstanding. I couldn't have asked for better care and I feel that all hospitals could learn a great deal if they modeled their care in the same way this facility runs. Let's face it, no one wants to be admitted to a psych unit but if you need help, this is the place that will help you and treat you with the dignity you deserve.

Should the staff at Shoal Creek read this message, thank you for all that you did for me. I will forever be grateful to you. You are all amazing. To the staff on the 5th floor, I owe you my life. Thank you so very much.

When I was there I was a freshman in high school. I was going through depression and taking medication for it and made me feel suicidal. One night I was at home and I took a whole bottle of my pills. I told my grandma and she called 911, and I was rushed to the hospital. The year was 2007 I think. They called people from the MHMR service and they took note of my condition and they must have referred me to that hospital. I was hallucinating in the ICU and taking out my tubes and trying to leave the hospital and security had to stop me. It was a very scary thing then because I could have died. My heart was beating rapidly and they was scared for my heart. I was transferred to seton shoal creek in a ambulance. When I got there I was scared and lonely. The patients were nice and I remember the staff being nice also. I remember it was an old building because you can smell the old in there.

AMAZING. I was checked in here last October and I was out in an ideal 3 days. The therapists and techs here are incredible, food is bearable, and it is overall a stress free environment. I was checked into the teens group and they were all jokeful and kind to one another. The techs were easy to talk to and actually mess around with, so it wasn't 100% serious all of the time. Amazing care. Highly recommended!!

The nurses and the aids were outstanding. Patient, kind and empathetic. I am so glad that this facility exists when one is in crisis. Too bad they don't have a transition plan for discharge. I checked out with the same issues unresolved. Food is greasy, salty and starchy so I was happy to get a salad every day. Beds were unbelievably hard and the paper pillow cases made my head sweat.

Shoal Creek's addiction Renaissance Program saved my life. It introduced me to AAs 12 Step Program. My sobriety is my first priority because without it, my list of "not yets" will lead me by my nose down that path to alcoholic insanity and death.
Today I have 10,000 days
