The Pickel Barrel

My husband and I stopped here for breakfast on the way to Luray Caverns on a Wednesday morning and we loved it! The staff is very kind, and welcoming. The breakfast is a traditional southern menu! My husband got “The Whole Barrell” for $10.50 and it came with 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, your choice of sausage/bacon/maple ham, your choice of potatoes shredded/hash/rounds, traditional grits and your choice of biscuit/English muffin/toast. I got the egg/cheese/bacon biscuit with corn beef hash! The biscuit was $3.75 and a side of corn beef hash I believe was in between $2-$3. This little diner is located maybe a mile off the interstate behind the exon gas station. We would highly recommend stopping in and supporting this delicious local southern comfort diner!

I got the Philly cheese steak sandwich and my wife got the chicken filet sandwich with macaroni and cheese and hush puppies. Chicken was super juicy bun was perfect. Mac and cheese was excellent. Hush puppies were average I probably wouldn’t get again. Philly cheese steak was excellent and exactly as expected. Food came out SUPER fast which was great because we were starving. Classic country themed restaurant lots of animals on the walls. Waiter was 10/10 friendly and helpful. Coconut custard pie was also great.

This is by far the BEST resturant that I have visisted since prior COVID. The customer service is a 10++++, Service 10++++ food selection +++++ food quailty 10++++++++ atmosphere 10+++++++ I got the fried Oysters with hush puppies and a cup of ham &bean soup. The oysters were fresh battered NOT FROZEN!! And large with a light fluffy batter so you tasted the fresh oyster and not a bunch of fried flour. The soup was just perfect! The Hush Puppies were hot & fresh and delicous. I strongly recommend this amazing restuarant! I am already planning my next visit to the area so I can go back to The Pickle Barrel and try some of the many choices of items they offer.

Absolutely one of the best places for a diverse menu of southern traditions. All the food was exceptional. The desserts are phenomenal. As suspected when we asked are all made home made in the store. Highly recommend this place.

I came here for the chicken fried steaks....the best I've had in a long time!!! I love this country setting vibe....it may become my favorite peaceful place to chow down on country meal. Great foods and great service!! A hidden jewel for eatery.

Comfort food at its best! The Pickel Barrel served up a good old fashioned Hamburger Steak w/Brown Gravy and my choice of sides that absolutely hit the spot on a recent visit. Service is always friendly and it just feels like a place you want to keep coming back to. So I do.

Wow. I am amazed by this incredible restaurant. The atmosphere is really cozy. Unless you don't like taxidermy. I got the fried chicken. It was made from scratch and really juicy inside. You know it is great when you come on a Wednesday evening and the parking lot had about 30 cars. I was traveling and was going to stop at the gas station to grab something quick. I saw the restaurant was crowded..I was curious. Glad I did. Food was home cooked and they were really fast. I waited 10 minutes for a to go order. If I lived here I would come to this reasonably priced restaurant/bar. There is plenty of seating and parking.. worth making trip to come here.

This place had the ultimate down-home feel. Very reasonably priced, great portions of appetizers and entrees alike. It’s enough to fill your stomach without making you feel completely miserable. We had the fried Catfish, as well as the fried Flounder - both were amazing. Battered in cornmeal just enough to where you had a near perfect balance of fish and batter taste. The Cole Slaw, amazing! The Hush Puppies…AHHHmazing. Our service was super prompt, and our waitress Kristen was very attentive.

The portion sizes are amazing and the food is so very good. I had the 3 piece salt herring, eggs, grits, a biscuit and a side of hash browns. The price is unbelievable. I'm definitely going back again and again.

Very much a maw and pop restaurant. Southern style country food. Reminds me of when I was a kid going to my grandparents house on Sundays and the smell of country food cooking. You definitely get your money's worth. We went twice in one weekend because it was that good! I would/will visit again! Thank you for being such a family oriented restaurant!

Strongly encourage a stop!! The food was awesome, we had pork chops and catfish. Both were cooked and seasoned perfectly!!

My husband and I have been looking for a great breakfast place! And they had my favorite S.O.S! Food was delicious, service was fantastic. I'm sad that I did go sooner! We will be back!

If you like family feel and friendly staff you'll love it here. I typically am there for breakfast and meetings in their hall but everything I've has has been solid. There's a lot to be said about a family run local place that just makes you feel like home.

Wonderful place to eat. I always enjoy the food. This visit was made especially nice by the warm treatment of one of my waitresses. This senior waitress was unbelievably thoughtful and kind. Will definitely return again and again.

The pancakes are wonderful. They are crispy, buttery and sweet. The cream chip beef is properly seasoned and neither salt nor pepper were needed. I know it's a small thing but their iced tea is delicious. I'm an unsweetened gal and there was actual taste to the drink!!!

This place was absolutely stellar. I had the Barrel Burger, which is a classic cheeseburger with all the trimmings but comes with a 12 ounce beef patty. I had mine served medium and they absolutely nailed it; a hot pink center with that fresh off the grill taste. The side salads are very generously portioned, the fried pickles are perfect, and the coffee is just right. We will definitely be coming back.

Had the open roast beef sandwich with mash potatoes and gravy and fried green beans, all I have to say wow, it was amazing, the portions were huge...great atmosphere and old skool country cooking. Well worth it, I will definitely be back.
