We just moved to Conover in November of 2022. Just got our 2023 house value, and it had gone up 57% for 2023 from what the original owners value in 2022. We are retired and I am 72 years old, and my significant other is 70 years old. This was our dream for retirement to move to this area to retire. We live on Social Security, and we still have a house payment, car payment, life Insurance payments, car and house insurance, etc. We don't qualify for the "Homestead" tax credit because your household income has to be no more than $33,800 annually to qualify. You have to be destitute! I am a U.S. Army Veteran 72 years old. I have my medical benefits with VA and their threshold for being able to receive VA benefits for me, with National VA Group 8 relax threshold for total income of 2 people for 2023 is $48,389. Our income is less than this, but more than "Homestead" tax credit of $33,800. This doesn't feel right to me. In every state I have lived we qualified for the Homestead Tax Credit. My significant other and I will have to sell depending on what the Tax office decides on how much the extra costs us. Of course, I will send them a request to reconsider. I bet most folks that have moved here got shocked just like we did. I really don't want to grade the Tax Office at this time as I want to see what the outcome is first, but it is required to grade them before I can post it. We are now in the panic mode and praying we can stay.....

we pay taxes on time, every year, for all taxes...
But received notice of 15.86 due from 2016
Attempting continually to phone for explanation of
"delinguent tax notice"
Continually there is a message "busy" call back another time.
Calling back does not work.
So now we, as citizens need to drive to the tax office for
a minor bill of $15.86.
This does not make sense.
Is there no way to email or get help other than to
drive 30 miles to the government center?

Typical government bullies that demand your hard earned wages. Look at the wonderful wooden archway that was placed in downtown hickory. That’s exactly what Catawba County citizens want their tax money spent on.
