This place gets booked up pretty far in advance so definitely plan ahead if you want to come here (or plan for a random weeknight).

That said, it was a really cool concept with great food and I would definitely come back.
Servers are going around with carts of different food offerings for that night, and you can select which you want to try out! Dim Sum style.
I thought the portion sizes were perfect for sampling.
The whole group had a really fun time.

Went here last November 2023, and was lucky to have been able to grab a reservation. Service was friendly and excellent, and the food was good. They have dimsum-style service where waiters go around with small servings of the same dish and offer it to each table. My family and I had the quail, which was good, the tofu, which was amazing, the fish, which was ok, the Pork salad, which was great, and a few other dishes which ranged from good to above average. Overall I'd say the experience was delightful, and the food was delicious, but I don't think all of the items were stellar. The service though was really excellent, and the server made sure that we were well taken care of, and even gave us a discount due to a long wait for one of our orders. 4.5 out of 5.

Finally stopped by for dinner here after years of neglecting this bucket list restaurant and my god…. It was stupendous. Everything from the staff to the food to the hostess to the optional ‘dim sum’ nature of the experience was incredible. Highly recommend the crab noodles, ricotta pancakes, but the ice cream sandwich off the desert menu was my favorite dish. I tend to cringe at foodie focused shows like ‘the bear’, but this establishment shows you what black belt culinary technique looks like. Don’t think it’s possible to not have a good time here. Cheers and Ty for having us!

Oh my GOODNESS this place did not disappoint. We had to make a reservation some 30 days in advance but it was well worth it.

There’s something so easy about having a little plate brought around right to you and being able to say “Yes I want that right now please” and just being able to eat it immediately. Absolutely divine.

And the flavors were just I N C R E D I B L E. Every dish had some many layers to it, it was just amazing.

1000/10 would recommend!

I was lucky enough to be invited by a friend… I had no idea what to expect and this was one of the best meals that I have had in a long time. The staff was friendly and helpful. We ordered a combination of menu items plus different things available on the cart. Everything was tasty and filling. I walked into the meal with a disdain for beets and left open minded. One of my favorite things about eating here was we were a group of three, and there was flexibility in receiving dishes that could be split by three people evenly. The vanilla “ice cream” sandwich was a dish that felt like it came directly from the heavens. This will definitely become a restaurant that will have been my permanent rotation for San Francisco.

Had date night here and was surprised by the unique experience. The place was vibrant and loud, in a beautiful kind of way though I’m unfortunately prone to headaches in crowded, dimly lit places such as these. The staff was kind for the most part though as some came around to offer food items off a cart or tray they came off a bit rude when you decided not to take an item. The food was fantastic! Come hungry and ready to have your tastebuds blown away with the different flavors from dish to dish. My three favorites from the night were the: CA state bird with provisions, garlic chive pancakes, and 1/2 dozen whole shrimp dumplings.

Elevated dining with a dim sum delight twist!

Inspired dishes of wagyu toast, garlic bread burrrata, and garlic chive pancakes to name a few. Every dish was a burst of flavour. Also enjoyed the non alcoholic drinks: guava hibiscus punch & shiso yuzu sofa. Highly recommend!

State Bird Provisions is the best restaurant I’ve been to in SF. The food is wonderful and service is excellent. You can tell the chefs really have perfected their craft, and it’s a treat to be able to experience their expertise during your meal. The Dungeness crab with yuba noodles and kimchi was divine, and their chips with smoked salmon dip is phenomenal. Highly recommend!

Amazing food and service. Everything was amazing, new innovative flavors. The textures and flavors on display were new and enjoyable. All these different ingredients combined very well to create unique flavors. The service was as expected from a high end restaurant, amazing. Did not have to wait long for food and I quite enjoyed being able to see the food through their dim sum style flavoring. I accidentally stabbed my waiter in the hand and I wanted to apologize but she just left. I felt very bad and if you are seeing this, I am sorry. Along with the food and service, the atmosphere was average. I would give 3 stars to the atmosphere but they played amazing music. I’m talking Kanye, rap, r&b, and a lot of amazing songs. This really heightened my energy and senses. Overall amazing.

State Bird Provisions is a quintessential San Francisco institution and is as much of an experience as it is a restaurant.

Food is served both Dim-sum style and á la carte, with servers bringing about small plates ranging from an upgraded American classic to an elevated Asian fusion delight, brought about by ecstatic servers looking to indulge a section of your palate, sometimes multiple sections, at once.

Bring an empty stomach, someone special, pick out a bunch of small plates that catch your eye, and rank them as you go!

For us, the Szechuan duck soup dumplings, chili crisp tofu, smoked trout dip, and the cucumber salad. The á la carte items, namely the titular state bird itself was great, but definitely not as standout as the small plate items. The steak à la plancha was also just alright.

Nevertheless, the ambience was casually perfect and service was amazing. It doesn't try to be a fancy restaurant, just happens to serve you amazing, well-constructed food.

This place is the distant cousin your mother compares you to, who has the 4.0 GPA, the MIT full-ride offer that he's sitting on, comes back to the motherland every summer to help underprivileged children learn English, and has a handful D1 offers across the country.

And here you are, watching him speak perfect Cantonese as the old ladies smile and put the bottom tray of 烧卖 onto your guys' Lazy Susan. But you both get to eat from the same bamboo steamer, so no one's complaining.

Fantastic dining experience. We were a party of two and got one appetizer, one main, and a bunch of the dim sum items. Everything we tried was incredibly tasty. The standouts were the pork belly, black sesame persimmons, chili tofu, and the ice cream sandwich dessert. The state bird provisions main was actually our least favorite. It wasn’t bad, but just a bit on the dry side and not as unique as everything else.

I've been here several times, and it's a must experience dining destination for this incredible city. The format and the diversity of flavors is a true representation of San Francisco.

The ambiance is relaxed, so come as you are. The service is on point and the demeanor of the staff is inviting from checking in with the host, conversing and getting educated by the servers to interacting with the chefs, bussers and everyone who make it happen here.

While I would love to chat through everything I've tried here, it would be too much. Just come with an open mind and try a bit of everything. Everything I've had was delicious from their veggies, dip, quail, chicken liver mousse, pork belly, wagyu toast, kimchi, cucumbers, tofu, burrata, ribs, oysters, dumplings, fish, etc. First timers should definitely get a mix of their staples and mains while going on a journey of curiosity with the dimsum-style bites that while make their way to you through the course of your experience.

It's truly a perfect place for any occasion even if you're just a foodie and want to try something new because chances are, even if you're a regular, they are working on something new and dynamic.

This was a new territory for us, aside from fried quail, every meal we took was dim sum style, and every meal that came on a cart was unique and bursting with flavour.
Even simple salads were amazing!
I recommend getting smoked duck, fried quail, and the oysters. The favorite was the pan fried tail of a halibut, and to top everything off we ordered black sesame chocolate mousse for dessert.
That was the best dessert I have ever had in a restaurant in my life. Just try it!!!

Simply mind blowing. Dim sum style where small modern fusion plates are carted around and you can order whatever appeals to you. Your server will also help with drinks and recommendations of a la carte items.

The food is world class. They have a well deserved Michelin designation. And you have to line up for any hope of a walk in - so definitely a reservation is necessary. Even with reservations, you have to book well ahead.

The space is intimate and cozy. But has a super vibrant vibe.

And the service is top notch. It's an open kitchen too so you can watch the amazing coordination of all of the cool staff to the servers.

Can't say enough. Five stars all around.

I came here for my husband's birthday, what a fun experience! Super unique dishes, and came on carts where you can order from like a dim sum place with a twist. Lively atmosphere, friendly staff!

Dined here for our anniversary dinner. Love that it’s affordable fine dining. We made reservations for 9pm but they were able to seat us earlier when we showed up at opening time. We sat at the counter and it was quite enjoyable watching the kitchen operate. The head chef was very meticulous with her staff in addressing quality control and customer feedback. Atmosphere was a little hectic but in a good way, service was great.

We enjoyed the dim sum style options (oysters, trout dip and chips, cucumber and feta, duck liver, tofu). We also ordered the steak and ham fried rice option which we couldn’t finish due to the generous portions. Dessert was yuzu tart, chocolate pave, peanut milk shots. Next time I’m here, I’d probably just do the dim sum options, and maybe some appetizers and dessert.

Absolutely unique, fun and delicious dining experience.
All dishes can be customized. Here’s the note how the menu can be adapted for vegan. I ended up being very flexible, accepting most vegetarian dishes.

My favorite was fig toast and yuba noodles.

No cocktails. But the wine and beer menu is large. Also, the neighboring bar will satisfy all cocktail wishes.

We ended up with $80 per person, which I think is very reasonable for a one star Michelin.

A really great restaurant where ‘americanized’ dishes are served in tapas/dim-sum style. The small dishes (not advertised on the menu) are really the attractive part of this place. The restaurant has multiple small dishes and you will need to choose if you want to try one when they come to you with the tray/trolley. Among the main dishes (advertised on the menu), definitely recommend folks to try out the quail dish and the red trout dish.

Service is good. A reservation is recommended as the place was really crowded when we went.

A definite recommendation for visitors and residents of SF
