We’ve been ordering from Bake Sum a few times since they always come up with creative ideas and taste delicious! I wish they open somewhere closer in the East Bay so we can sit down and enjoy freshly baked pastries without worrying about our car 😖

The green onion croissant was amazing. Simple but flavorful. The red bean milk bun was good but wished it had a stronger red bean flavor. Love the fact that this place has more savory options than you would usually see at a bakery. Def wanna go back to try the garlic pull apart bun

AMAZING!! I moved away from the Bay Area in 2018 and super miss this kind of creative, fusion-y kind of food. I went this morning and got one of each kind of cookie, an okonomiyaki danish, an aloo matar danish, pineapple bun, yuzu meringue bun, and croissubi. (The staff person was really thoughtful and put all the savory pastries in one box and the sweet ones in another box, and put both boxes in a bag when I explained I'd be taking them on the bus.)

We haven't tried all the cookies yet as of this review, but so far everything is very well baked, thoughtfully composed, and well balanced. The nori in the crossubi is really nice, and the spiciness of the aloo matar is offset by the yogurt. My favorite might be the yuzu meringue bun, which has a REALLY GENEROUS yuzu curd filling that's sharp and fragrant. Really a delight. I wish I could get stuff like this in North Carolina!

Their pastries were pure perfection. Cannot go wrong with anything, even the mochie bites had insanely great texture and flavor. Everything was soo good. Loved their mochi bites, milk buns, and croissants. Will try to catch them earlier to try their other pastries. Also had great coffee and nice cozy atmosphere.

Bake Sum is a bakery which combines unique Asian flavors into different baked goods/pastries. I've been several times since they opened and they make some pretty unique and flavorful items.

I love croissants, so I recommend those, but all their items are good (cookies, mochi bites, etc.). These days items at these specialty bakeries are a little up there in price, ranging from $4-6 each, but I think they're high quality and worth it.

There's an ongoing rotation of items based on seasonal flavors.

When they first opened they were only open twice a week and there would be really long lines, now they've expanded their hours and there are options for placing orders online.

I've met the owner (Joyce), and she and her staff are friendly and working hard.

I usually have Bake Sum’s pastries when I go to The Crown for coffee, but finally had a chance to walk over to their shop off Grand. I Had never seen their Croissubi before and it was great! Like all of their pastries super light, flaky, and buttery. I loved the musubi fusion on this one. Their okonomiyaki danish is also one of my favorites as well!

Went for the grand opening 9/18. Waited for 1h45min but it was worth it! The line was ~300 ft long! The pastries are amazing, really innovative and well made! And well priced, around $5 each. The staff is very friendly, Joyce came out and give samples for people queuing!

Really lovely spot for coffee and pastries. It's all great quality, and also very aesthetically pleasing. Friendly staff. Do go early as they seem to run out quickly of their favourite items.

Don’t let the line scare you! The baked goods are more than worth it! So so tasty! The mango Thai tea croissant is light and crunchy, all the flavors and the textures go so well together, I can’t describe how good it is! You can’t go wrong with any of their products! The garlic croissant is delicious buttery flaky dough wrapped around aromatic delicious garlic. The cakes and flan they have are beyond decadent!! Not to mention their growing drink menu 😋 i can not recommend bake sum enough!!

Unique bakery with an asian twist. The place was pretty busy and crowded when I went on a Saturday morning. There’s a small bench for dining in.

I had a red bean bun, choco-banana croissant, and a hot matcha latte. All the items tasted amazing. The matcha was whisked to your order, so it was great and authentic.

Get there early for a great selection. The yuzu meringue is super delicious and packed with yuzu flavor. The loco moco on puff pastry is delicious.

Absolutely fantastic bakery. Asian flavor inspired baked goods (yuzu, matcha, lilikoi etc). Everything is good here you can’t go wrong.

Simply amazing pastries. I got a mango cardamom bun and I’m still thinking about it days later. I also love the sesame snickerdoodle. Disregard the bite taken out of the pastry picture… I couldn’t wait!

OMG the photos do not do the pastries justice. I finally ordered a Bake Sum box in time with the fabled Ube Conchita. I was blown away by everything in the box.

Joyce and team have perfectly fused Asian flavors and French Viennosserie. I thought some of the pastries (spam croissant and okonmiyaki danish, for instance) would be gimmicky, but fall slightly short of hype like so many other fusion attempts in the Bay Area. This is not the case!!!

Having had Chinoisserie’s (Joyce’s last hustle) pastries in the past, I was worried these pastries would be a bit dry. I was delighted to find that Bake Sum has found its pastry groove. The pastry quality rivals that of Arsicault in SF (my ideal, I know others like Tartine or others better), and the flavors are inventive and well developed. Flaky to the max (perhaps the flakiest I’ve had), but the butter still shines through. A+ on pastry cream too. If I still lived in the Bay Area, I would try to make this a more regular treat.

The Yuzu meringue croissant was bomb, and I’m now intent on going ham on the tart version.

Almond cake was delightful—like a madeleine meets marzipan (and even my marzipan/almond croissant hating partner loved it). Crisp on the outside, oh so moist on the inside.

Mochi bites weren’t as flavorful as Third Culture’s muffins, but they have a lovely crisp on the outside, and I appreciated that they weren’t as cloyingly sweet (which I understand does impact the flavor strength) as Third Culture’s. Also, yay! A Thai tea flavor!

The cookies show up well in photos and the descriptions made them sound inventive (matchadoodle, hojicha chocolate, black sesame), but in reality were the only disappointment of the purchase (and still pretty good). The flavors didn’t shine through, and they were baked too long for my tastes (they were all shortbread texture when I was hoping for a crisp border and chewy center).

It took me a long time to order a box because the price felt steep ($35, more than I’d typically buy in one bakery go), but as they suggest, you can share sum with a friend! And you will NOT be disappointed. With pastries these good, if they opened a regular brick and mortar (vs. the current preorder and pickup a couple days a week), they would deserve lines longer than Tartine’s (especially the non-Mission spin-offs). Get it while you can!!!!

Great covid practices (good signage, masking, hand sanitizer, outdoor pickup).

Best of luck Joyce and team... I’m your biggest fan!!

everything on their june menu was so delicious! their pastries are creative, interesting, and high quality and the coffee was super good too. i thought it was a little pricey but it’s definitely well worth the price. the people working there were quick, polite, and helpful too!

like most other bakeries, u do have to go a little early to get some items like the mango cardamom croissant before they sell out but it’s definitely worth the trip.

i don’t usually leave reviews but this place is a real gem! such cute decor too, even though it’s all pink it doesn’t feel like too much

An amazing female-owned bakery featuring thoughtfully crafted treats. Selfishly I don't want to share this bakery so I can eat all of the things but it is so good it deserves to be shared with others. Spread the love!!

Great stuff, even if it's an atypical selection. Hours are pretty limited but worth going to.
