The Petra Museum, inaugurated by Crown Prince Hussein on April 18, 2019, is a modern institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history of Petra, Jordan. The museum’s construction, supported by a $7 million contribution from the Government of Japan and technical assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), took five years to complete. It offers visitors insights into aspects of Petra that are not visible in the archaeological park, including the broader history and archaeology of the surrounding region. The museum’s exhibits traverse a wide timeline, from Neolithic times to the Islamic era, highlighting the cultural and historical significance of Petra beyond its famous rock-cut architecture.

Amazingly detailed and well curated museum. Explains everything you may want to know about Raqmu/Petra. I highly recommend going to the museum before going to the monument.

Brilliant museum to enjoy either the afternoon you arrive in Petra or after your first day. Paid for by the Japanese so strange signs are only in Arabic and English. Well curated space with a lot of information, a lot of it delivered in very palatable interactive chunks. about the site and the Nabateans - who have become my new favourite Ancient People. I’m looking forward to my second day in Petra and putting my knowledge into practise.

Very good museum! Free entry, and lots of information. We went around noon, and it was almost empty. Lots of interactive screens with information about Petra that is cool to know before entering the ancient city, so you know what you are looking at. Also nicely air conditioned :)

Petra museum is located right next to the Visitors Centre, that walks you through the entire history of this beautiful area and I would surely recommend a visit to anyone looking to learn more about this amazing civilization of bygone times.

Free shuttle bus that takes you to little Petra leaves every 30 min ( more or less) 7-2 pm ( honestly not much to see there), but you can start your hike to the monastery from this point or buy a ticket for 5 JOD per person for a 4x4 ride ( 20 min ride from little Petra drop off) to where you'll start your uphill hike.

Great, modern museum, with beautiful artifacts and great and interactive explanations.
I'd totally recommend visiting this if you can the evening before starting the visit of Petra. You will notice much more details, and understand better the Nabatean culture and civilization.
Furthermore it is free, and the building is great looking and has AC :)

This museum provides an excellent introduction to Petra. By all means, spend half-an-hour touring the museum--before entering Petra if you're not going for a 6 AM view of Petra empty and washed by the dawn.

The museum isn't huge, but it's well-designed, has a superb explanation of Nabatean aquatic engineering and a number of significant and unique archaeological artifacts. I found a little ancient glass figure of a child's face especially touching. Well worth the time to explore. Plus, the bathrooms are modern and clean.

Few people seemed to frequent this museum, a shame due to its quality.
