Sundial of Human Involvement

I suppose you could call the Sundial of Human Involvement the original interactive experience using nothing but ancient technology - no headphones, goggles or electricity required! Magnificent panoramas await after a steep climb from the parking. Even Sisyphus would take a break from rock chasing to admire the view. On a clear day you can see Sydney skyscrapers and the Harbour Bridge. A fun place to meditate on the cosmos.....

This is a very interesting sundial. It requires the user of the Sundial to stand in a particular spot in order to show the current time. This is explained on a brass plate adjacent to the sundial. A more 'traditional' sundial is also located adjacent to the Sundial of Human Involvement.

The location of the Sundial offers magnificent views across Campbelltown and a wonderful vista of the Mount Annan Australian Botanic Gardens, where the Sundial is located.

It is possible to drive close to this location, and then take a short uphill walk to the Sundial. A memorial bench is located adjacent to the Sundial if you need to take a rest after walking up to the Sundial.

Another memorial nearby is dedicated to a young apprentice horticulturalist who died before they completed their apprenticeship with the Botanic Gardens.

If you are visiting the Australian Botanic Gardens, this Sundial is one of the locations within the Gardens that you definitely must visit.

It's so nice and picturesque here. Very quiet and you can see Sydney Harbour Bridge as well as mountains. Every direction has something nice to look at. The sundial is a nice touch to go and see.

Teach the family how to tell the time using their own shadows cast by the Sun.

A semi-circle of fifteen large hour stones, representing the hours between dawn and sunset, with a ground level analemma set in the centre to tell you where to stand to cast your shadow.

The analemma is a figure-8 loop marked with the months of the year. Just stand on the right month to confirm the sun time.

The Sundial of Human Involvement is a great educational tool for the whole family but if you can't work it out, no worries - there is a traditional sundial there too!

It is a 200 metre walk up a moderate hillside concrete footpath from Caley Drive, where you must leave the car.
