Absolutely recommend the main exposition about Vienna history. It contains exhibits covering all main points of the city and brief idea about all city's main museums and galleries.
There are thematic activities for kids in many rooms to keep them busy, while adults are viewing the exposition.
Also, go to the terrace to see an amazing view over the surrounding area.
We were visiting during the first Sunday of the month, when the entrance is free, but there was no line to enter, the museum was not overcrowded.

This museum is a treasure house. Amazing that there is no entrance fee as I’ve been to many, many museums that were far inferior but charged substantial entrance fees. Not only are the exhibits themselves well presented and well lit but the information provided in both German and English is extensive and relevant! Rather than dry history the explanations bring the paintings and objects on display to life. Great for children, too, with many hands on and interactive exhibits. Finally, there’s a nice cafe on the third floor that’s welll worth visiting.

It is amazing 🤩 I love every piece of art. If you are interested in history, you can find a helper for it. You only need to have earphones with you. The museum is well designed. The cafe offers a good view of the church and coffee. I will definitely be there once again!

Thankfully I made here finally! The museum covers so many time periods and topics. There's also a good amount of ,play' stations for kids and offers for blind people - and we've just been in the permanent exhibition which was free. Also the view from the cafe at the top is lovely.

It's an amazing museum that every tourist visiting Vienna should see. It shows the history of Vienna from the Roman times to the modern times through the huge number of exhibits, with detailed explanation about all of them in German and in English. I especially liked the Biedermeier part, there was explanation to all the paintings, what and why is painted on them, put in the context of the period. The 20th century part was also particularly interesting. It was very educational. And the museum was free, which is great! The time there was spent with much use and enjoyment.

A very interesting museum. I have been to Vienna many times, but this museum was not open, it opened at the beginning of December after many years of reconstruction. Impressive exposures. Nothing is spared from the story as it is, with facts. 3 floors, a restaurant with a terrace with a wonderful view of the cathedral and the Technical University. Entrance is free, but it's better to get a ticket online to avoid waiting.

Came here before 9AM and waiting to open and the entrance is for free
At the entrance, the staff will ask you to leave your bag, jackets/winter outfits and the likes in their open cloak area.
You will be greeted by the staffs at the start of the museum tour...
It has a 3 level (ground to 4th floors) with different artifacts, displays and paintings - with English descriptions to make understandable from tourists.
In each levels or ground floors, there are staff's to ask queries, helped and assist you.
At that time, the level 4 or 4th floor was still under renovation.
The museum is such a nice, well organized, exceptional, impressive and marvelous.
One of the museums in Vienna that is a worth visit.
You can stay here for at least 2 hrs. if you want to read the description one by one.
There is a cafeteria at the 3rd floor and souvenir shop at ground floor near the cloak area.
Recommendable to come here in Vienna

A good museum, showing history of Vienna throughout history. Admission is free for the main exposure. Better arrive early, as there're a lot of people coming later on.

It's a free museum. The first floor contains more bookish information. It beautifully reveals the history of Vienna in a holistic way. Since it is free, there is a queue at noon on weekends. There are also art workshops in the museum. I recommend you stop by.

Absolutely great museum, with some artefacts and hostory and loada of amazing art. They offer a free audio guide and three floors of exhibits, combined with a nice terrace with a lovely view. Not perfectly suitable for very small children, although it offers some interactive elements and captivating exhibits, will be more appreciated by their older siblings and parents. Totally worth the visit.

what a cool museum! permanent exhibition is FREE, but I recommend booking a timeslot. It's completely new and they applied modern psychological and architectural knowledge to maximize the museum experience, it really is a pleasure.

Also it is huuge! There are so many expositionals, so many maps and paintings.

Don't forget to check out the terrace at the top, great view!
have fun

I visited the free exhibition that showed Vienna (and Austria) in various times, starting from the Prehistoric Age and ending in today's times. A highly interactive exhibition, where you can touch, wear and smell many of the exhibits! A hidden gem in the heart of Wien! Highly recommend!

If you want to discover Vienna's history, this is the place to go. Re-opened after a lengthy renovation, it takes you back prior to the first settlement of the area (dinosaur bone), pre and post both wars, social housing (why, how, what the units looked like, including furnishings), works of Austrian artists, architecture and original stained glass windows of St. Stephan cathedral (original drawings, too). You can tell, I love this museum.
