Fantastic value for money, menu is in German because it’s traditional and not set up for tourists. The waiters are efficient and may seem rude or impolite but please remember that this is actually Viennese culture. We spoke a bit of German and they were very pleased that we made an effort. Live traditional music playing too. Was like stepping into a Time Machine :)

Old-school and typically quiet coffeehouse. Staff are friendly and professional even if during busy hours, overworked. I cant imagine myself going elsewhere anymore. I can see why Bernhard liked the place.

This place is absolutely amazing. It's like walking onto the set of a film. It's an almost perfectly preserved 1930s interior. If any of the furnishings have been replaced after 1955, I would be surprised. Not faux, not retro, it's all real. It's quiet and calm. The waiters are sufficiently numerous, formal, polite, unintrusive, and efficient, and the prices are amazingly reasonable. In short, this is everything a Viennese coffee house should be.

On the other hand if you want a more international experience with prescribed jazz streamed at you and the 'barrista' to call you by your first name when they present you with your triple decaff caramel latte, Starbucks is just round the corner.

Old, classic cafe that serves reasonably priced food and cakes. Loved how they've maintained the old furnitures and classic design of the cafe!

First came here 10 years ago and wanted to repeat.
Many, many locals who clearly come each day. We booked ahead and I think that helped as the place was full later on.
I had the daily lunch special, superb deep fried blood sausage, potato and sauerkraut. Trust me, it was very tasty. The wife had a nice schnitzel and salad.
Efficient waiter.

This is my favourite authentic Café in Vienna, I used to visit it daily 30 years ago, it hasn't changed, the waiters are refreshingly old fashioned Viennese waiters, you have to charm and bully them into a resemblance of politeness. Please don't ever change!!
Food is great, Strudels are proper Viennese, the place itself is inspiring, just to think of all the famous artists who met there. I met Master Hridlicka there several times, just wonderful!!

It's a coffee house like the Hawelka, only smaller and with more cake choices. Cash only! It's the genuine look of a Viennese coffee house, with the benches, the decor and the newspapers in the wicker holders. A place to slow down and rest your feet for a bit. Excellent coffee, here called Mocca. That's an espresso, not a drink with chocolate.

Wow, just wow. Time stopped here sometime early 1900s and they have a very genuine / unchanged interior. Cellphones are not allowed (there is a payphone) and people have made it a thing to sit and read their newspapers in peace. Good service (albeit a bit prompt), excellent coffee and fantastic live music if you visit Sunday afternoon. A must see in Vienna.

We always stop off for a coffee and a light Lunch.
The food on menu is very typical Austrian we like the sausages with Sauerkraut and potatoes with mustard.

They have home made type soups...various cakes like Apple strudel.

Newspapers in wooden frames hat and coat stands the entire decor is like going back to the 1940s or 50s.

Old memorabilia pictures and photos

Waiters with white shirts Bow ties leather money bags they are very much on the ball and quick.

It's close to the Sissy palace and horse drawn carriages

A must in Vienna! The very traditional atmosphere of a Viennese coffee shop, which is keeping this spirit for decades.

A really authentic, local, non touristy coffee house with a quiet, peaceful ambience- unlike overpriced, noisy, unfriendly places with fed up waiters! I loved it here, it doesn't disappoint if you want a more genuine, rustic cafe experience.

Recommended by our walking tour guide and an authentically Viennese experience. Really enjoyed the coffee and cakes but the whole ambience and atmosphere made it; reasonable prices, not over touristed and a slice of Viennese daily life.

Lovely authentic rustic café with nice helpful waiters and honest food. Quiet atmosphere. Keep in mind that you can only pay cash. It tends to keep the tourists away.

Café Bräunerhof is definitely one of the most important cafés for the German-speaking post-war literary scene.
Author Thomas Bernhard used to come here regularly, one reason being that they do have an EXCELLENT international selection of newspapers, quite possibly the best in town, except in August when attendance is low.
Visit Café Bräunerhof during the week outside of lunchtime hours, and you’ll most likely find a seat. On Saturdays, there’s live music with a small orchestra playing classical music, and the place is consequently packed.
The food is okay, and the coffee, which used to be subpar, has definitely improved. The staff tends to consist of the classic “grumpy Viennese waiter” type, and in the summer it can get very hot without AC.
Still…well, how can I put it… I absolutely LOVE this place!
