Gerngross is one of the most famous department stores in Vienna at Mariahilfer Strasse 42–48 in the 7th district of Vienna, Neubau. Gerngross Kaufhaus AG is the operator of the department store. Alfred Abraham Gerngroß (1844–1908) from Forth near Nuremberg, who had learned the trade profession from Herzmansky, founded in 1863, founded a fabric store on September 26, 1879 with his younger brother Hugo (1857–1929) in the corner of Mariahilfer Strasse 48 Kirchengasse. After a brief competition with his former employer August Herzmansky, the two companies tried to work together, but this did not lead to any success, which is why this connection was broken up again in 1881. Through subsequent success, the company was able to acquire 13 neighboring houses over time. In 1883 the company was transformed into a company, the business developed into the largest department store in Vienna and subsequently the largest department store in the monarchy.

From 1902 to 1904, Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer (Fellner & Helmer office) built a new five-story concrete stand structure on Mariahilfer Strasse. The outer facade came from Fellner's son Ferdinand III. The building contained five elevator systems and an escalator. After the death of Alfred Gerngroß, the company was taken over by his sons Albert (1874–1972), Robert (1876–1942 in the Shoa) and Paul (1880–1954) and on December 22, 1911 into a public limited company, trading under A. Gerngross A. = G. (see picture Gerngross Vienna advertisement 1912). At its best, the department store had around 1,600 employees. The building received a lighthouse as a crown in 1926.

Stepping into Gerngross while exploring Vienna was an absolute delight, an oasis of shopping wonder that truly catered to my every desire. The vibrant array of stores and brands, seamlessly laid out for easy navigation, made me feel like I had unearthed a treasure trove amidst the city's charm. As a traveler, the user reviews and images offered invaluable insights, helping me curate my shopping journey with confidence and excitement. Beyond the offerings, Gerngross's awareness of events and opening hours spared me any surprises, ensuring that my limited time in this retail haven was as dynamic and fulfilling as the city itself. A heartfelt must-visit for fellow adventurers seeking retail therapy in Vienna!

A nice mall with a good Billa supermarket (with a separate organic/vegan section), a good DM and a huge Medien Markt. I found things in all these stores that I couldn't find in other branches of these stores. And you're on Mariahilferstraße! The only downside is that it closes at 6 pm on Saturdays which seems a bit early to me.

Lots of different stores, nice look and nice staff. A bit crowded in some places but manageable. Has a Metro station directly connected to the mall, so it's easily accessible. Has accommodations for people in wheelchairs. If you're looking to buy something fancy go there!

There's a huge MediaMarkt here spanning multiple floors. Large kitchenware, electronics, entertainment, and computer sections (I picked up a USB key from a large selection, all with good prices). Conveniently located near Neubaugasse Metro station!

Clean and nice. Great toys store "Heinz" where kids can try out some toys and just play around. Nice restaurants - Akakiko is of my first choice there. Saturn store just in the city center.

Quick service, efficient, friendly and no waiting for long. No appointment required even though they recommend to make an appointment. Personally they are very fast. Always buy my household and electronics from here 🙂

One of my favorite place in Mariahilfer

All brands are there

Zara got two floors

Only bad thing is that toilets are open on 5th floor only. Which means that you need ages to go there and come back. They are not available on all the floors

mostly it is crowded like nay other shopping mall. As this is not the biggest mall but a tiny miny mall in marahilfer so you need to be ready for a different expereince.

I also like the idea of open street shops.. like you are walking in between shops.. There is no clear bounderies/walls for the shops

It is a nice smaller mall, in beautiful Mariahilfer Straße, with Zara, dm, Samsonite, Swarovski and other clothes and home supplies, also a caffe is in there where you can grab a snack.
