Beautifully curated and maintained museum, esp. Haydn's garden (which was blooming and bearing fruit in early Sept.) The "bonus" is that this is two museums in one: Brahms has a room as a "permanent guest," with memorabilia from his nearby apt that was destroyed in 20th cent.

Nice house. Important to remember that when Haydn bought it this was countryside and the street and the back garden looked very different. Still, he's lived several happy years here.
I came here around 4:30pm and had the house to myself.

Perhaps my opinion about this place is biassed, as I am a great Haydn fan, but I think it is a very interesting place to visit. As a museum, I think it is even better than Mozart's house, but much less visited because Haydn's is not in the city center.

In 1793, aged around 61, Haydn bought a house in Gumpendorf, which was then a leafy and quiet village outside Vienna and now forms part of the city’s 6th district.

It would be four years until Haydn moved in (among other things, he filled the intervening time with a long trip to London), but the house became his residence until his death there in 1809. Haydn’s occupancy coincides with perhaps his period of greatest celebrity.

Fortunately for us, the building has survived intact. The fine folk at the Wien Museum turned it into a small, permanent Haydn exhibition and restored the house with delicate historical accuracy.

INSIDE THE HAYDN HOUSE

Rather incongruously, a virtual parrot greets you when you enter the courtyard through the big wooden doors. Apparently, Haydn bought a parrot in London.

It' s a nice little museum. We enjoyed walking around and getting to know a bit more about Haydn' s life.

This was where Haydn resided for the last 12 years of his life. Gave us a great insight into Haydn’s late life and time in Vienna. Original compositions and documents were interesting, and many of his possessions were preserved, including his last piano.
This exhibition was not busy in the late afternoon when we went, and gave us time to slowly digest each piece. No need to purchase tickets in advance.
To add a cherry on top, there is a room designated to Brahms, as his apartment was destroyed. I can’t recommend this enough for a lover of classical music or anyone interested in Haydn

Super interesting is you’re a classic music lover! What an interesting man / composer! A very well kept museum of Haydn’s last home with full English translations. Plus it includes a Brahms room!!! I even ended up buying the book...

Interesting, tastefully-done museum with a lot of Haydn-related material. Gives a very touching portrait of Papa Haydn in his last years. Shows his humanity and character.

Haydn's final residence. Tranquil garden to sit in. Well maintained museum with something for most people, I reckon. Recommend.

Visit time: 35 - 45 minutes

Lovely and informative and genuinely interesting. So surprising that no one else was there and a real shame (even though made our visit feel very private).
Highly recommended

Been here once to photograph the exhibition and now for a beautiful concert (Hommage to Haydn)... Always a pleasure to come here. Enjoy the old fashion architecture and the nice garden, in an area, where you barely find parks (or just very small ones, because there are so many residential buildings and shops/cafes in Mariahilf and Neubau).

Definitely worth a visit - especially if you are interested in classical music, or if you are just a tourist in Vienna!

If you are a fan of Haydn this is well worth a visit. Small but well presented. The house where the great man spent his last years is a moving tribute to one of the best composers of the Classical period.

If you're a fan of classical composers, this is kind of a hidden gem. It's further out from downtown, but is much less crowded than Mozarthaus Wien. That said, you might have to catch an Uber, because the nearest public transit options aren't terribly convenient.
