John was so awesome. Fun to talk to, extremely helpful, and shared some good tips with my son who wanted to try fly Fishing. He was making lures when we walked in which was cool to see. Neat shop right off the main road. Definitely worth a visit.

John's an awesome guy that is full of so much knowledge. While most of the supplies is aimed towards non-trout fishing there is still lots of supplies for dry flies, midges, and nymphs. The shop is a perfect fly shop, nice and small but filled with tons of materials, flies, and fishing pictures. I come here very often to pick up hooks because it is close to home. It is very nice to have a quality fly shop with such a nice owner!

John or Jon, was an awesome salesman. I went up to the Northshore for some salmon fishing but forgot to bring my fly reel with me. He helped me picked one out and I decided right away with the budget I had. I was also low on other accessories, and he hooked me up with some.

Thank you John, for getting me a reel right away and hooking me up with the line. I wanted to take a picture with you before I left to go back home, but the store was closed Sunday. I would've missed my opportunity to fish the salmon run if it wasn't for you!

Awesome place to stop and get a lay of the waters! It always is a good sign when you walk into a fly shop and there is a fly tying table in the middle of the shop that’s got a lot of activity! All the flies I saw were really well made and reasonably priced. Some great advice got me hooked into some awesome fish today! I highly recommend stopping in for a visit and at least picking up a couple flies and having a good fishy conversation

Awesome fly shop! Owner was extremely nice and helpful when it came to picking flies, choosing location, and general tips! I also thought it was really cool that he still has a handful of flies he ties himself, definitely great to see! We will be back when in the area for sure!

I purchased some flies online and recieved stellar service! Some of the colors I picked out weren't available, but John promptly responded with some great alternatives. When I recieved the flies there was even a handwritten thank you note from John. There are lots of reasons people get into fly fishing, but the type of service and craftsmanship John provides is why people continue the hobby. The few times I have been in the store I was impressed. A wide selection of flies and tying material for the seasoned fisherman, along with enough gear to outfit someone just starting out. Also, some great advice and a true appreciation of each customer that comes in the store. I can't say enough good things about John and the shop, other than they have a customer for life!

Great Lakes Fly Shop should be a pit stop for any fly anglers heading up the north shore. Owner John is the nicest guy, and happy to answer any questions. Whether about flies, rods/reels, rigging, or what’s hot on the north shore, he’ll give you great advice that will help you more enjoy your time on the water and catch more fish!

The best fly shop around. Friendly staff, and an awesome selection of everything you'd expect from a top-notch fly shop. A giant selection of fly tying materials, tons of multi-species flies, rods, reels, waders, fly boxes, vests, and a whole lot more. Stop in and talk with John and he'll get you situated with whatever you need.

The Great Lakes Fly Shop is my go to place for anything I need and I am proud to support my local fly shop. John is awesome! His experince and guidance is what you would come to expect and not the run around like the big box chain stores. If he doesn't have it, he is happy to help get what you need. I was interested in getting an Echo BAG Quickshot 7wt (see photo) and he made it happen prior to bass opener. If you are in the area, make sure to swing by the store.

Love this place. With there only being two shops in the Twin Ports area its nice that both have a great selection of gear and essentials. The best part about Great Lakes Fly Shop is Jon. He is a now BS kind of person who will help you find what you need and not sell you something you don't need. If you need any advice or have any questions regarding fly fishing, this is the place to go.

An outstanding selection of flies and fly-tying supplies. John knows his stuff, and he's always happy to chat about the craft, make recommendations, etc. No trip to Duluth is complete without dropping by here!

Great little fly shop. Nice selection of warmwater and Coldwater flies. Was able to help me out on some pike fly selections before heading farther north.

Without doubt, John Fehnel's shop is THE place to stop when you come to fish the North Shore and the Arrowhead region of Minnesota. Heck, just stop by and check it out even if you don't fly-fish. Yet. I've never known John to bite. Yet.

All things fly-fishing and fly-tying spoken here: local rivers, streams, & lakes; float-fishing & wade-fishing; single-hand, switch, & two-handed rods/lines; traditional fly, Spey, Scandi, Skagit, & North Shore chuck & duck styles; dry flies, nymphs, streamers, poppers; steelhead yarn, flies, & beads. (Ask nice, maybe beg, and he may have some spawn sacs in back.)

Both warm-water & cold-water fish are revered & respected here, but particular attention is paid to steelhead, & smallmouth. And though this is the "North Coast," don't forget the salt. John likes chasing redfish, too.

Get up-to-date condition and fishing reports.
Pick up locally-tied "hot" flies. Buy quality tackle & gear. Try a new rod or reel. Choose from a wide selection of tying materials. Sit down and tie a fly or two. Buy a magazine. Take a class. Hire a guide. Support local fly shops.

Best selection of hackle in the Northwoods. There are a few steelhead flies that John ties that are incredible. Highly recommend swinging in here before you head up the shore or onto the Cloquet.

Awesome shop. Most (if not all) the flies are tied in house and all equipment sold is used by the employees so they are able to tell you exactly what you are buying.

John's great. He gave my buddy a great spot for largemouth last week and gave me some good advice today about basic mechanics. I'll be back...
