This is Kuma. We got him at the end of December just after moving to San Antonio from another state. He was incredibly shy when we first met him but he has become a bundle of energy and fun and joy! While every fur baby brings their own sets of challenges, we are so grateful for our Kuma. ADL does an amazing job with these animals and don’t get enough credit, thank you all for our sweet boy!

Adopted a new family member today. She is the second pup we have adopted from ADL on Naco, the first one we’ve had for over a decade and I swear she understands English. I picked up Ginger today (new name is London) and it was obvious that everyone at ADL just loved what they did so much! Raven specifically was the adoption counselor who met with me to make sure our home was a proper fit — puppies especially, a lot of energy, gotta know what you’re getting into — and the amount of time, care, and genuine passion she had for the animals and what they did at ADL was just… beyond words. I feel very confident not only in the care and health of our new addition, but also that I can reach out to ADL if I have any further questions. That facility is just an amazing resource for San Antonio and we will continue to refer people there with loving homes in search of a new furry addition to their family.

I adopted my 2nd dog from this facility last Monday. Their staff is really friendly and the animals are well cared for. Up to date with vaccinations, neutered, and chipped. Our puppy was ready to go. I also got a good deal on some puppy essentials at the end of our visit. Check this place out if you are looking for a new pet.

I remember entering here as a little girl in the year of 2007. That’s where I adopted a special needs kitten, he had screws in both back legs, I was afraid nobody would want him. We had given him the name Achilles, and he remained by my side for 17 years. Unfortunately, I lost him this year unexpectedly. I just wanted to thank the place I got him from, he turned out to be an amazing feline and a mama’s boy. Now, I have memories that will be cherished and forever remained with me. I love you, Achilles ❤

They adopt fur babies to new homes, and God bless them for the work that they do. It's saddens me to see that there are so many loving animals without homes. All the fur babies there just want to be loved and happy, and you have the ability to adopt one and provide them with what they need. They will provide you with happiness and unconditional love, and it is your responsibility to provide for them as if they were a member of the family which they are or will be. They need to be shown love, they need to be healthy and that is up to you to take care of that and they need a warm home with lots of love because they have so much love to give you. As I said, when you're adopting a fur baby, you're taking home a new member of the family, and they deserve the best you can provide for them. The people at the Animal Defense League are doing a great job in taking care of the animals and working to find a good home for them. They are a no-kill shelter, and that is a positive. No animal deserves to die because they don't have a home, and I will stand up and speak for them. Give some love to refer baby, and they will return that love 10 times. Adopt a fur baby today!

This place was amazing!! The layout was easy to follow and super clean everywhere.
The ppl here really knew what they were doing. They were super helpful with all my questions and all the other guest.
They were fast for pickups.
Supportive and excited with their adoptions.
Especially this one lady named Jule. omg she was just so sweet and really kind thru the adoption she was doing.
They had a wide variety of toys to buy, and my cat loves her catnip carrot!!!
I loved all the dontion options they offered for the animals in their care. If i wanted to bring up anything for the animals, it was clear where everything would go. A box for everything was labled nicely in there drop off area.
I love seeing helping animals made easy.
If you are looking for a new pet to take home, this is the place to look.

April of 2020 my wife and I adopted "Tyrion" (wife renamed to Teddy). He was about 2yrs old (if I remember correctly) and is now 4yrs old... he started off shy and is now a MASSIVE love bug. He does love females more than males and I think we was abused and then abandoned by a male... as he was aggressive towards all males and only males. Now he is sweet to everyone.

I am grateful for this place and it's amazing staff. I came here hoping to find a dog that would be loving and protective with our kids/family and we were blessed with exactly that. I was familiar with different breeds and temperament only by books I read. The staff was so helpful with my questions; and I loved how well they truly knew each dogs personality, strengths and weaknesses. They helped me with their suggestions yet told me to go through and see all the dogs to form my own opinion. The dedicated time and love they gave Jessica (khiloa) our beautiful black pit bull has only enhanced her affectionate actions. She is wonderful with all of children, and she has exceeded our expectations. Her first night with us is one we will never forget and always cherish. Thank you to those of you who cared for our dog before she entered our lives. I am grateful to all who work here and for all of your hard work and for choosing to do what you do everyday. You help heal hearts, make people laugh and smile. A piece of you leaves with each animal that finds a home, please know and feel the difference you make in many lives.

Thank you,

The Woods Family

This was my first time adopting an animal and was shocked at how easy the process was! Everyone was so nice and helpful and it was amazing to know the people working/volunteering there knew the personality differences to help you find your perfect companion. I could not be happier with my new baby kitten! If I could afford it, I’d definitely go back and adopt more.

We adopted our little girl the runt- BELLA - or shelter name CRANBERRY PIE. She didn't take long to learn WE truly wanted her. As of today (3 months old and growing stronger daily), she's making herself at home, learning her growing, clumsy self can't quite jump in bed, BUT SOON! That outside is awesome, dirt is fun to dig in, and nobody should come on it. With barking school daily taught by the neighbor dogs, teaching her that
NO MATTER WHAT, even if you know the car, someone in your family is in the car or its within 500 miles of your fence,
DOG BONE IT- YOU BARK!!! LOL.
The staff were kind and helpful, SO thankful this is a NO KILL shelter. Thank you for caring for our girl until we found her to take home to be in our family.

If couldn’t imagine a nicer place!

We found an abandoned puppy on the road and they took her in. We were worried about leaving her in a shelter (horror stories from others) but the second we turned up we knew it was the right choice. Clean, friendly and amazing facilities.

As much as we wanted to keep her, with 2 other dogs it just wasn’t possible. This place was the best option really and the people are so wonderful, making it an easier decision.

Good luck in finding your new home! ❤

We just adopted our new family member Ricky Bobby and it was a great experience. I was very nervous because we already have a dog but the staff took their time and answered all my concerns.

I love the ADL they are wonderful!!! I found a puppy tied to the fence and they took him in (I would have taken him home but my rescue 7y/o puppy doesn't like other dogs) Thank y'all so much!

Love it. Always adopt don't shop. They need homes! I especially love the kitties that are a little "plump" and live in the "PHAT CAMP". Too cute! Like the one in the pics I shared. 😂

We adopted our pit bull puppy here in December, and it was a great experience, and easy to socialize with any potential pets. All staff was great to work with, and our adoption counselor was a gem. Even held my 1 yr old busy kid so we could fill out papers.

We have been taking pup here to their animal hospital for weekly skin scrape tests because she had demodectic mange (demodex) when we adopted her. Always an easy, good experience. Monthly pet meds are a great price, and staff is super cool. Shout out to the girl who showed me how to clip puppy's nails for free! We would adopt from here again!
