Woodlawn Cemetery

Beautiful historic cemetery with many of Detroit’s greats buried there.

We stopped by the office and a representative met us outside with a map and list of some of the notable people buried there with the locations. The map I’ve found online, but not the the list, so I’ve included it here.

It’s a peaceful and reflective walk or drive, with symbolism everywhere. Such detail and artistry in the moments to honor these people. The walk/drive gives you a history lesson of sorts. We looked up the unlisted large monuments and often found the story of those buried there. It was a real representation of Detroit’s past.

Well worth a visit.

The cemetery is beautiful. I saw rosa parks . I been wanting to go see Rosa Parks for a while so I was overwhelmed knowing I got the opportunity to see Rosa Parks. The downside is that the Graves in the back of the cemetery are covered with grass. I tried hard to remove some off a few Graves. I wanted to go back to clean off a few Graves hopefully soon. This is a beautiful place.

Had the most amazing experience at Woodlawn Cemetery. I traveled up to Detroit for a music trip including visiting the legendary Motown Museum and wanted to visit Woodlawn to pay my respects to some of my favorite singers including David Ruffin and Levi Stubbs. Jukaila, one of the cemetery’ representatives, not only assisted me in finding the graves, but gave me a personal tour and drove me to every grave I wanted to see. I have been to many cemeteries to pay my respects to famous individuals but never have had such a remarkable experience as I did here. If you want to pay your respects to entertainers or individuals you admire, the staff will help you!!

well i never been there but i look it up that rosa park died on 2005 i was 5 on 2005 so i wanna say something to her

Thank you to the staff at Woodlawn for assisting us with the pre planning services for our Mom. We like to particularly acknowledge Counselor Darlene Mathis who went above and beyond to make sure that we were completely informed and satisfied with our decisions following the death of our mom. She accommodated requested changes from one Chapel to another. Darlene worked with us to set up the service and then followed up to make sure that everything ran smoothly. She was a true gem. Very knowledgeable and efficient. Woodlawn is a great cemetery, our family has a long-standing relationship with Woodlawn. I visit my family often, and the grounds are clean, well maintained, and the sense of peace is wonderful. Herds of deer wander the back of the graveyard, and it is beautiful all four seasons. In winter they keep the roads clear.

I appreciated the professional visit i had with office consultant, Jordan Cummings, regarding Living Will, funeral pre-planning & cremation urn options. All questions & concerns I had was answered thoroughly & I left knowing all that was needed to have my estate, important documents & final preparations covered. I also was given a personal tour around the cemetery where I felt more like I was walking through a Historic Museum verses a cemetery where people sometimes feel creeped out or eerie. I experienced a very peaceful place today.

Beautiful and peaceful. Full of trees and sculptures. The lady at the main office was lovely. She was very welcoming and provided us with a map and a list of names of well-known people who were laid to rest here.

Thank you to the amazingly friendly and helpful lady in the admin office at Woodlawn who did not see my request as strange, as I was worried she might. I fulfilled a dream of coming to the USA and specifically to Detroit to pay my respects to both Ms Parks and Mr Holton.

Such a peaceful resting place for all who dwell there. Beautiful sayings on the walls surrounding the chapel. In the warm sunshine yesterday, with birds chirping and squirrels scampering around, I marvelled at the tranquility of this place.

Immaculately kept. Quaint little roads divide sections, the beautiful headstones, monuments and mausoleums will give you plenty to see while walking.

My entire family is buried in the Orthodox Section.Beautiful.I Love planting flowers and washing their stones.My Grandparents, Mom, Uncle, Aunt.Always a pleasure to visit.Funerals all went great.Beautiful well kept always

If you love a good cemetery walk, like I do... This is your place. Confession: I don't have an actual family member in the cemetery. It's just a beautiful cemetery.

I go here for a break from the garbage of society. I love this cemetery. Be careful of the coyote and wolf, though. They take turns being here throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Honestly, I’ve stopped going as often because of this.

Very beautiful, well taken care of. It always breaks my heart to see unkempt head stones and lawn, but wood lawn is very clean, with a unique beauty, and also peaceful.

I came here to place my grandmothers body so she could soon go up to heaven, This is a amazing place. I believe that if u see this and uh soon to know me PLACE ME HERE IT IS AMAZINGGGGG. FIVE STARS

The grounds here are beautiful to roam- so many historically significant people rest here. Definitely worth a visit. Wish i could spend all day.

The people there are awesome, patient and caring, my grandmother, grandfather, and now my mother are there and we've always had great experiences each time.

Peaceful place to visit my mother,grandmother,uncle and aunt Woodlawn has been a part of my family for some time and I appreciate the work that they have done.

The serenity in the wilderness are Lifesavers for me. It's really wild and quiet and beautiful
