I came here before they were temporarily closed but I wanted to share some pictures. I loved seeing the craftsmanship because as you can see not all of them look the same. It’s like the perfect cemetery for a horror movie or show, walking around here at night would give you creepy, spine chilling vibes. It was free to visit and we didn’t do any tours. We drove here but parking was limited.

The cemetery is closed to entry. You may occasionally see people coming or going but they are there to maintain the tombs. You can see quite a bit through the locked iron gates if you walk around the perimeter. The Lafayette Cemetery Number One is the oldest cemetery in what was the City of Lafayette. Lafayette was later incorporated into New Orleans. The above ground tombs are varied and in some ways quite beautiful.

Temporarily closed so I was of course disappointed but went to multiple spots and got a few good looks of different mausoleums and plots. Really hoping to get inside some day. The work and craftmanship on many of these mausoleums, headstones and statues are second to none. Some are quite creepy as well which I'm totally into.

Lafayette Cemetery No.1 is beautiful. Lafayette is surrounded with tall wonderful big trees. You can walk around outside the cemetery under the shade, you can enjoy the historic age white brick tall wall also see four metal gates. You see through the gates and take look at the victorian gothic victorian mausoleum. I can’t say to much come check it out.

After the "Incident" happened a dear friend of mine, God rest his soul, left his bus and will to me. Such a cozy home this has made during thick and thin with The Tower, Gerik, and The Reclaimed.

We took the walking tour and it was fantastic. Lee was our guide and he was the best tour guide we’ve ever had. He knew so much and had personal context which made the tour so much cooler. Loved all that we learned about the area and well worth the cost.

Well um, if you wanna. It’s eerie but something to see. I’m not planning on going in the ground so I would want to get placed there.

We only had 20 minutes to explore before the cemetery closed, but it was a worthy experience. There were a couple of guided tours happening nearby and we heard a few interesting tidbits of info. Definitely a quintessential point of interest in NOLA.

Very interesting landmark! It's unfortunate many graves are so damaged but also adds to the intrigue and really gives of that centuries-old vibe. If you visit, be sure you check the hours--they're quite short and the grounds-keepers don't mess around walking to kick visitors out when closing. Definitely add a cemetery visit while you're in town!

What can I say It's Beautiful!! Everything in New Orleans is beautiful!! So much history..One thing to remember is u have to becareful bc ppl will approach you and offer to take you on a tour through there .Use common sense and you will be fine. We did run into a couple of these people and one walked with us and told us things for Free. He genuinely seemed to care about the Cemetery and the History. When your inside the Cemetery there are little urns that you would think that we're for flowers but they're not there where people are cremated. And you wouldn't know it.also when you walk in there are 2 graves that is nothing fancy just brick and they are not graves at all it's where they used to cremate the bodies when they first open the graveyard. And the front and side walls that surround the graveyard is full of Bodies!! There is just so much HISTORY. The whole place is breath taking beautiful..

This is probably the most famous cemetery in the country and one of the most photographed spots in NOLA. The cemetery oozes mystery by day and spook by night. When it is open you can spend a while walking through the graves and learning some of the history. Bring a friend if you're nervous or superstitious.

The Lafayette Cemetery is a cool place to visit while in New Orleans. The above ground tombs are fascinating to look at. Many of them have been fixed up over the years.

No cost to visiting this place. Doesn't take too long to walk about... Thirty minutes max.

Love the Cemetery. So much old history. If you like old history and old decaying buildings and stuff this is definitely a must to visit ! Open to public, no admission fee.

Easy to get to. Parking was easily accessible on any other side streets.

Truly as unique experience walking through this historic site.

Tour guides set up next to the entrance or in the shade around the square.

Beautiful old cemetery. Likely my favorite in all of New Orleans. The history there is astonishing, and the care that went into each plot is apparent. This particular cemetery has no entrance fee, and you may walk it’s grounds as long as you like (until closing time, obviously). It’s also located in the most beautiful neighborhood of New Orleans (Garden District), with gorgeous homes, walkways and museums. Commanders Palace is directly across the street - another “must” for anyone in town.

Beautiful architecture. Quite reminds me of Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina (where I come from) Could take some beautiful pictures. It has a lot of historical value, and impressive structures. Definitely recommend paying this place a visit!

One of my favorite cemeteries in New Orleans. You have the option of either a self-guided tour or a guided tour (tour guides usually set up right outside of the gate for those who just wander by). It is easily accessible, and easy to explore the entire grounds. Although it is fairly small, it's easy to feel as if you've left the city of the living altogether, and have instead found existence in a city created entirely for the dead. Closes earlier on weekends (3 instead of 4), unless you're on a guided tour.

One of the most beautiful cemeteries/places I have ever been. Located in the amazing Garden District with historic houses and tons of trees around. A national historic place that is worth seeing. We did not use a guide and found are way around fine. Probably would be nice if you have the time.

Awesome FREE cemetery you can visit! It's in a really nice neighboorhood and you can walk around the whole cemetery. Tour guides here work for tips.
