Great museum and it's free as well.
The field of American folk art was first defined at the turn of the twentieth century by collectors, professional artists, critics, dealers, and curators whose search for an authentic American art seemed to be finally answered in works that presented a nuanced picture of national identity, faith, progress, ingenuity, community, and individuality. Under the umbrella of “folk art” the field expanded to also include artists working in the present. For the last twenty years, the term self-taught has more regularly come to address these artists, whose inspiration emerges from unsuspected paths and unconventional places, giving voice to individuals who may be situated outside the social mainstream. Those individuals have been active participants in the shaping of American visual culture, influencing generations of artists and establishing lively artistic traditions.

It's a small museum, unless I missed parts of it. Nonetheless, it was very interesting and nicely curated. I went when they were having an exhibition about quilts. Admission is free, and you get a sticker when you walk in (yay!)

For the amount of space they have, they have used every inch well. Today, i went to see an exhibit about slavery portrayed in the arts. It really made you think about the struggle slaves faced and how it was ridiculed and wasnt shown much within a painting. I highly recommend it and it was cheap!

If again someone claims New York would be just expensive, no I found that by chance as a truffle pig, free of charge like much of culture. A super well presented exhibition about quilts of a typical American handicraft.
I was really fascinated 😇😇😇😇😇

The American Folk Art Museum Unnamed Figures: Black Presence and Absence in the Early American North exhibit I attended was exceptional. The art was nicely displayed from start to finish. The gift shop was exciting and had an attractive array of merchandise. This was the first time I attended this museum.

While it's not a massive space, I absolutely loved the collection of Hirschfield pieces. Some truly iconic pieces of art that you won't find anywhere else. Great spot to spend an hour two strolling around along with plenty of space to take a seat and relax. Surprisingly busy. Arrived minutes after they first opened and there was already a small crowd inside.

FREE admission. FREE lockers! Clean spacious bathrooms.

The paintings by Polish-American painter Morris Hirschfield were wonderful.

The elaborate work of patterns featuring women or animals reminiscent of textiles caught my eye. I also like the color of the artist's work💛

The American Folk Art Museum is always worth a visit when we come to NYC! Exhibits are meticulously curated and thoughtfully presented in a compact setting. Admission is free (but make a donation if you are able to). Great gift shop too!

I went to a quilt exhibit here recently and I was floored by the curation of the exhibit. It was thoughtful, inclusive, and radical. Who would of known a quilt exhibit could have been that? Its also small enough so that you feel like you had a very personal and graspable experience for the day! I highly recommend going!

I've been here for the past two exhibitions and I really enjoyed both of them. The museum is easy to get to, and is small enough to be feel like you could take your time and see the whole show.

A perfect sized museum for people with too little energy for the bigger museums.

Wonderful museum. Intentionally, beautifully curated. A smaller museum so you can take everything in.

so I went into this not knowing what to expect and when I tell you that this was diffent and completely surprised me . most of the artists on display went thru a dark time in their lives or had metal issues and the art they was displaying reflexed exactly that. the interesting part was this was an inside view of what the artists experience in life . Now folks please be advise that some of the arts in display are not suitable for kids at all ,some arts may even shock you depending on who you are but the over all experience is amazing and well worth your time. Just remember to keep an open mind about what on display and read each of the bio of each artist before viewing the art . the whole exhibit take about an hour to see it all. fast way to this location is taking the 1 train to 66 street and it about a 2 mins walk. the staff is friendly extremely respectful and helpful.there are free lockers to hold you personal belonging while you checking out the gallery .this museum have an amazing gift shop with things you can only buy at this location. also you should make reservations thru eventbright since they are require to get in .

Can't beat a free museum! There are only 2 exhibits at a time since it is a very small space. You can expect to go through the whole thing in less than 30 minutes, including reading every plaque and getting to see all the art. Some unique American art, mostly from unknown or even anonymous artists. Would recommend if you have a week or two to spend in NYC!
