First time seeing the statue. Very nice park. The stairs to the river are a killer if you are out of shape. 206 steps one way.

Amazing statue! Constructed out of concrete and pink granite chips beginning in 1908. They didn't have cement trucks back then. An engineering marvel!

It is a must stop whenever we are in the area. My kids love to see the statue and hear about the history and walk around the park. Someday we hope to get down the stairs and get closer to the water. It is nice that you can see the statue, both from the park itself, and from across the road from when we are too busy to actually stop as an added bonus, there is a Casey’s general store nearby and my kids love the pizza there

So cool. Up on the hill overlooking the river. A very cool statue located in the state park. It's worth a stop and a look. The history of it is also very interesting. It has been there a lot longer than we thought.

I like to get up Lowden State Park a couple of times a year just to clear my head and take some pictures/video of Chief Blackhawk

Lovely park camping, hiking, picnicking and of course the historic "Eternal Indian" statue. We'll worth a visit!

Take a hike below the statue. It is steep on the upper trail and steeps leading down to the the river. It is a nice drive in the country to get there. Great for a short hike, picnic and the view was beautiful. They have a Camp ground also.

Road leads all the way up to a parking lot in front of the statue.....nice view of the river below. It has a trail leading to an overlook best seen durin fall or spring before it gets green.

Worth checking out. Make sure you go over to Oregon and take "2" north. There is a wayside pull over that has a nice view of the statue.

Very cool to see it up close. There was construction going on around it so couldn't get too close.

The stairs are brutal but we had a good time. Nice overlook with picnic areas in park near statue as well as at the river's edge.

The Black Hawk statue should be seen in person to properly appreciate this 1911 monument. It is quite impressive and huge at slightly over 50 feet tall. I was surprised that a famous sculptor such as Lorado Taft used concrete for a statue. This technique was likely the most efficient method for creating a statue this large in size. As a result it is easily visible from the other side of the Rock River Valley. At night there are lights around the base of the statue. Taft’s name for this statue is “The Eternal Indian” as his tribute to Native Americans. Another local name is the Rock River Colossus. Popular opinion has changed the common name to Black Hawk. However Taft had used a Euroamerican friend wrapped in a blanket Indian style as the model for the statue instead of the portrait of Black Hawk in McKenney and Hall’s History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Currently the statue restoration efforts that began in 2013 have hit a funding snag. In 2015 Landmarks Illinois listed this statue as one of the most endangered sites in the state.

Beautiful area. Serene. It's covered during the winter, so be sure to go in the spring/summer/fall.
