The Dunes Restaurant

Came up with my family to visit friends for the 2024 hot rod weekend, and came to eat dinner after a long day of showing off our cars. Ayrar was our waiter. Very polite and patient, with quick and efficient service.
Food was absolutely phenomenal! I had seafood alfredo; beautiful presentation, shrimp was perfect, scallops were full of flavor, as was the sauce, but it was missing the crabmeat. Oh well, everything makes up for it!
Stole a piece of my dad’s ribeye. Absolutely delicious! Seasoned to perfection with a perfect grill scoring and taste! Would absolutely come again if I didn’t live all the way in Detroit 🤣 definitely give this place a shot!

Dunes is a wonderful restaurant! Food, service, and atmosphere- everything is amazing! Our server, Austin, did a fabulous job and was very accurate and quick. We ordered 3 omelets and 2 breakfast biscuits. The Omelettes were the Western, Farmers, and Crab! All 3 were delicious. The biscuits are amazing! If you haven’t tried Dunes before, give it a go! You won’t regret it!!

We went and got breakfast while on vacation and had a great time! Joseph was our server and he was great all around! I would highly recommend grabbing breakfast if you’re looking for somewhere good and affordable the prices were great and you get a good amount of food as well. If you are Deciding on going do it!

Stop in this morning for breakfast. The Dunes never disappoint. The food is delicious and the servings are large. Biscuits and hot cakes are both large and very tasty. If you are lucky you will get Alex W. as your server he is fantastic and very attentive. Hopefully we will be back soon.

Update a year later fall 2023. We came back for another breakfast. The food and service was great. My wife got shrimp and grits and loved it.

Very tasty food and great service made our early dinner a successful outing. We arrived in time for the early bird special (25% off most food items on the dinner menu) between 4pm to 5pm. We went during the week (Wed) and it wasn’t crowded during our visit. The service was excellent. The drinks, appetizer and main meal all came out quickly, separate of course, but still pretty fast. Our waiter kept checking on us, making sure drinks were refilled and asking if we needed anything. The prices were pretty typical for the Outer Banks and the 25% early bird special made a good difference. As others have said, the hush puppies are very good and the food overall very tasty….

I ordered the flounder, which was good. But the true winner of this meal was the mashed sweet potatoes!! We also ordered the tiramisu. Our waiter brought that out, along with a slice of Florida sunshine cake at no extra charge!
Our waiter was great, the food was tasty and the atmosphere was nice!!

Our waiter Mr. Yates was excellent. I had fried chicken just like my grandmother used to make me as I was growing up. I am so impressed by this restaurant. I would give 6 stars if possible. I wish I had taken a picture.

I was in nags head with my wife and had the opportunity to eat again at the dunes. I again was super pleased. My wife super pleased as well. I am confident whatever you order will taste excellent. Everything has a freshness about it. ENJOY!

Our 1st trip to the Dunes for dinner. Excellent sercvice and delicious shrimp meal. Our visit was perfect and we for sure will return.

My first time breakfasting (really brunch since it was 11:30) here and they did not disappoint! Zach was our awesome waiter and took great care of us, he was rolling but always asked how we were when he went by. Our food came out quickly and while it was still hot, very generous portions and so so good! All booths have dividers between and the tables are nicely spaced out.

Hands down best hush puppies

We have been the the outer banks 6 or 7 times and have been to a lot of restaurants.
These hush puppies where hot, melt in your mouth amazing, with a little sweetness to them. They also have cinnamon butter to dip on (I never thought of butter on a hush puppy… very good)

I ordered the crab cakes. I was happy I got 2 ! There used more crab meat then all of the other ingredients then go into it. It was slightly fried and fall apart yummness in my mouth.

My husband ordered the steak. The time I asked how it was, it was gone. He said it was cooked medium like he asked. Wasn’t chewy it alot of fat.

Was kids friendly with the Mac and cheese and high chairs. Will definitely be back

We first heard about the Dunes Restaurant from a friend when we were down in May 2022.
The food is absolutely incredible the portions are huge and the prices are great !!!
We just got back home from the Outer Banks where we spent all of last week (August 13-20), we went three mornings for breakfast. Needless to say we absolutely love the place and the staff is phenomenal. They are very friendly and they even greeted me by my name when I arrived. They actually take time to get to know you and even the owner came over and greeted our table the first morning we were there. They really make you feel like you’re at home and the atmosphere is awesome.
We will definitely be coming back here to be over and over again in the future.

Amazing !!!! Food is the best ever. Everything was hot and fresh. The service was spot on! The mixed drinks are NOT watered down they are great. Prices are fantastic. Val, our waitress was one of the best I've ever had. She was very attentive and had a very nice disposition. I would highly recommend this place.

Stopped in for breakfast during the off-season. One of few restaurants open for breakfast but we weren't disappointed. The food was excellent & plentiful. Wonderful choices!! Great service!! We will be back! March 2022 update: Stopped in for breakfast before starting our trip home. Had the Belgian waffle, eggs and bacon. Good stuff!!! The prices are great, lower than we can get at home! Looking forward to our next visit! August 2022 update: Back again for breakfast!! Had the creamed chipped beef on a biscuit (SOS). Good stuff!! Our server, Darlene, was very friendly and attentive.

I've been going to the dunes since I was a child. It's one of the great bastions of the Outer Banks. The food is good. The service is always friendly, and sometimes kind of humorous. The prices are good.

You might have to wait a bit sometimes for a seat. The place is in high demand. Is it absolutely amazing? No, but it's dependably good every single time!

On a personal note, some of the best hot cakes on the outer Banks! They serve them in the old Al Van Curen style . It's a local thing. If you know you know.

Hurricane 🌀 / Tropical Storm Ian cut our Nags Head OBX Trip short this week we packed up to head back to Pennsylvania late Thursday Afternoon... Though we had to stop at The Dunes Restaurant for Hush Puppies & Dinner!!!

Arrived just after 4pm... Seated immediately... The server was nice and explained the Specials and Dinner Menu.

Drinks and Hush Puppies arrived Hot & Fresh with Honey Butter 🤤😋😊

I had the Fried Bounty of the Sea ( Fresh NC Flounder, Large Shrimp, premium Scallops, Oysters, and Crab Cake) Delicious perfectly light battered and fried have to say this is the way fried seafood should be! Seafood🦐🦀🦪

My wife and youngest had the homemade Crab Cakes... They both agreed they were delicious and made the way they should be Crab Meat with very minimal filler! 🦀 😋

Our middle son had the Popcorn Shrimp Dinner with fries and cheese grits, he loved his dinner! 😋🦐 🍟

Our oldest had the Dunes Burger with fries, which he enjoyed 😋 🍔 🍟

The waitress and I am assuming one of the managers stopped a few times to refill our drinks and to make sure our meals were prepared... Too bad we were too stuffed to enjoy the desserts they had to offer.

Thank You Dunes Restaurant for making our final OBX Dinner for the trip home enjoyable!

I've come here every once in a while for a few years with my family and it's never been disappointing. Today we went for breakfast, and our waitress Sarah was very nice! You can tell she's a hard worker.
Got the crab and jack omelette, which had a lot more crab meat than you'd think for $16 and it still came with sides!
Poached egg plate was around $8 and came with a ton of food. + the atmosphere of the dunes is very nice and it's never rowdy or unbearably loud like most breakfast places.

Very beautiful experience overall compared to other restaurants in the area, business casual. The wait was normal but we kept busy looking at the merchandise they had for sale. The bathrooms were clean and love the coconut oil salt scrub to wash hands! Nice touch🙏My family and I enjoyed it. My only complain were the drinks, the carbon dioxide gas was out, but this is fixable. Customer service surprisingly in this day and time was awesome. Is nice to see the staff well dress in their work attired. Minutes away from Jeannette’s Pier on the beach. Don’t think twice.

Food was great. The restaurant was very crowed when we arrived. The said we could sit at the bar and order to avoid the wait. We took their advice and it was a good decision. Great service.

Amazing gem! It has the nicest and happiest staff coupled with delicious food and lovely atmosphere - a win-win on every count! Definitely give the Florida Sunshine Cake a try and the steamed spiced shrimp!
