The Book House

Wow. If you like bookshops, this is the place for you. Books on the shelves. Books on the floor. Books on the staircase. It’s a trove of books.
They have a large variety of new and used books. You can take hours to explore and find that rare find that you can find elsewhere.
As others noted, it is not comparable to Half Price Books. Their selection a lot more eclectic. You will find a lot of books that you cannot find elsewhere. And yes, it’s true. They are expensive; both for new and used books. I even noticed some new books marked at above suggested retail.
Worth browsing.

The Book House is possibly the greatest bookstore I've been to in St. Louis. With the space that they have, they've crammed the most books per square foot I've ever seen. The shelves are full, so make countless stacks on the floor! Why not? Though I did trip a few times when browsing. Despite the over-full space, staff has maintained a very orderly setup.

The Book House offers new and used books of every genre as well as collector's editions and very old volumes. There's comfortable seating throughout, rolling ladders that customers can use, and a bright children's section.

On the wall leading downstairs are several author autographs after they presented or signed books for an event. I'm eager to go back and continue exploring.

I have always wanted to stop in here. Well today I was in Maplewood and I had time to stop in. Wow! There are soooo many books! I found it to be pretty well organized and was able to find the categories I was looking for. I have always loved independent bookstores and this one has new books, collectibles and tons of used books. The cookbook section was my favorite!

The STL area is so lucky to have The Book House! It is such a charming space--two entire stories of books, complete with shop cats! (What more could a book lover ask for?) The Book House is a great place to linger and explore--it has a really warm, cozy, and inviting atmosphere (with huge shelves, books stacked on every available surface, it basically looks like every charming indie bookshop you see in movies.) They have a wonderful mix of new, used, and special edition books, and a nice selection dedicated specifically to STL-focused books. They also do a nice of spotlighting local authors, which is a welcome addition. I would say their on-ground selection skews more towards new books than used ones, but their small, dedicated used book section has lots of treasures, there are used books to be found throughout, and their online site also offers a lot of options in a range of price points. A delightful indie bookstore which is a cozy, welcoming place to spend an afternoon!

The coziest place in town to discover your next favorite book! Packed to the gills with a staggering variety of old, new, and rare books, this store boasts tons of corners to curl up and read, friendly staff, and the ability to locate nearly any book you can think of, from best sellers to rare out-of-print beauties. The staff pick shelf always has something interesting to offer, and new releases arrive almost daily. Whether you’re passing through or have lived here your whole life, this is a must-see spot!

Stopped in today for the first time... SO MANY BOOKS!! Could spend hours there! My granddaughter got books, loved on the cats & climbed the bookcase ladder.. Highly recommend!

Absolutely amazing bookstore with the best staff. They have so many books and so many great recommendations. I loved walking around looking at everything and playing with the cat staff. I highly recommend coming here to pick up a book or just to look around.

A nice little place to stop in for any kind of book you are looking for, they had new, used, old, and rare! Staff didn’t seem very friendly, and having a coffee station in the bathroom was a little odd, but we had a great time looking around and buying a book to take home for a keepsake of our time. Walking thru here definitely made me itch to read books more often. Would come again!

As an avid ("constant," if you read him often) Stephen King reader, I've come to suspect that there are certain places in the world that are hidden...in a special way. These places are often right in front of you, smack in the middle of Hometown, USA. I think The Book House is one of those places! I have been on a Dark Tower Series journey for over two years now, and it concluded with The Book House. I am such a weird person that I like to buy my books from second-hand book stores, and they MUST be the same publisher, dimensions, cover art, etc. I started The Dark Tower, and unbeknownst to me at the time, bought a copy that was part of a set LEAST published and MOST difficult to find...This was in Lakeland, FL in 2019...Finally, in 2022, after moving to California (LA) and scouring the territory and internet, I was able to find the last book in my lunatic search, and I found it, through a Reddit connection, who happened upon a second-hand book shop named "The Book House" while they were temporarily in St. Louis. If this little place could have such an impact on me, and me never having been there in person, imagine how it could change you if you frequent it??? Thank you to The Book House for helping continue my Stephen King jigsaw puzzle!

Like a bookstore from the old days! This place is absolutely perfect. Both old and new book many hard to find books. The collection in the store is so large you can browse for an hour and hardly scratch the surface.

Everyone was nice and polite. So many book options. I was looking for the Starfarers Saga by Vonda N McIntyre and they had all 4 books! Amazingly lucky find as they've been out of print for almost 20yrs.

Ordered a rare book for Christmas and it arrived well packaged, and exactly as described. Shipped quickly as well. The book is GORGEOUS! Thank you!

You'll think you died and went to heat

This is possibly one of the best book stores I've ever been to, and that's saying something because I've been to a lot. What strikes me most about this store is how much it has, but how easy it is to find stuff. The vibe is fun, the layout is fun, the selection is amazing. The sci-fic section is huge. A must visit.

PS there is a bonus store cat!

Super cozy bookstore with a huge selection and a decent bargain bin. Easily could have spent a day digging around in there.

Coolest bookstore ever. We drove 3.5 hours and it was soo worth it.
