Checker's II

One word, WOW! We stopped by after a day at the Illinois Railway Museum. The food is well prepared, quick and very tasty. Our server was very friendly and helpful (our first time here). The portions are abundant. Everyone took home leftovers. Besides American favorites, there is some Bavarian influence on the menu
as they have bratwurst and a variety of schnitzel dishes on the menu. I'll definitely be back! Great option if you are in the area. One caution is that seating is limited in the winter when the out door area is closed

What a great little place. On a whim we decided we wanted to have chicken for dinner. It was later on Sunday, so I looked up places close by. The Chicken Schnitzel pictures on Google hooked us. The food was amazing. We had the seared Ahi for an appetizer. We both got the Chicken Schnitzel. It was huge and delicious, and the potatoes and onions under it were outstanding. Next time, maybe the Hunters Schnitzel. The picture is of the leftovers. I forgot to take a picture before eating it.

Now, let's talk about the food – a true highlight of the evening. I opted for the classic cheeseburger and waffle fries, and I must say, it was a decision well made. The cheeseburger was a masterpiece, featuring a juicy and perfectly cooked patty nestled between a fresh, soft bun. The cheese melted just right, adding a rich and savory element to each bite. The accompanying waffle fries were a delightful twist, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, making for an excellent side dish that complemented the burger impeccably.

The service was another commendable aspect of this dining experience. The staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu, providing recommendations with genuine enthusiasm.

We have enjoyed the broasted chicken for over 2 decades and it has never disappointed. It is always piping hot and freshly prepared. The variety of sides is impressive and they are delicious.

The staff is very professional and accommodating.

This place is about 40 minutes away for us but it is worth every minute of the drive.

Found ourselves in Union today and were lucky enough to have found this resturant! Food was fresh and hot and delicious. We will be back for sure!

Hey Everyone,
For having to celebrate my dads birthday, it was a great experience! I appreciated the different kind of soups I was able to try and the cheese curds were excellent! Their Ruben is surprisingly yummy and impressive with their coleslaw on the side! I’d say it’s a great kept secret for it being a mom and pop restaurant but go ahead a help me put the word out that it is a go to with big portions as well which I noticed with great quality all around!

Stumbled into this place because my friend decided not to use his GPS. Susan (the bartender) was attentive, the sesame coated Seared Ahi Tuna steak was great. Had a shot, and smile as well as our bearings and headed out.

Such a cute little spot in a cute little town! The best food! Loved the hot ham and cheese and schnitzel and the fried chicken and portobello burger! Definitely a gem!

I had the Bavarian Chicken special with German potatoes. Friends had a pork sandwich and steak salad.

Best burgers ever. Cannot find a better one than Checkers II....

When here with family but sadly wasn't hungry at the time so I can't say how their food was but great place.

This place was very nice. We stopped here after going to the railroad museum. They were busy but still found time to accommodate our group of 4 adults and 3 little kids. The service and food were both very good. If we are back this way, we will stop in again.

Absolutely phenomenal! The German food is to die for! I'm not easy to please, but his made my taste buds dance!

Stopped by for a late lunch. Server was great. Food was very good, too. My kids had Hamburgers, which were top notch. I had the German sausage plate. The sausage was ok. The kraut and potato’s were exceptional. Great experience overall.

Let me start by stating I have 2 reviews, one for the gazebo and one for the restaurant. It's sort of hard to tell the gazebo is anything but a gazebo till you get up close and see there's a circular bar with a bunch of wonderful people from Union enjoying their drinks and beautiful weather. I was having trouble getting in the right door due to the width of my wheelchair, and it took 2 guys to force the left door which probably hasn't been opened in 10 years, but once I was in everyone cheered. The people were very friendly, the bartender lady was overly generous in her drink pours (be prepared to eat something or waiting a while before driving anywhere), and it was my lucky day as a gentleman at the bar graciously bought all mine and my friend's drinks. It's not every day you experience people being that nice for no reason other than that is just who they are. Anyway, the music selection was also particularly memorable. If you like Frank Sinatra, Bill Haley, Johnny Cash, and the most masculine group of guys singing "My Girl" as if they were in Top Gun, this will be your place.

So after drinking the most vodka-filled vodka and tonic, we took our leave to the restaurant. Once inside you are transported to a much different experience that is more European as well as being very cozy and quaint. I forget what my friend had, but I went with the Hunter's Schnitzel that came with French onion soup. The soup was perfect, as in I can't imagine any other person making it better. My meal was equally exceptional, and I went home with a great deal of leftovers. Make sure you get dessert too. I brought home some cheesecake which my spouse very much appreciated. Checker's II is the definition of a hidden gem, so don't wait to plan your visit.
