Yama Japanese Restaurant

I've been wanting to visit Yama for months now, and finally got the opportunity to go for dinner on Wednesday. Though their hours are limited, it was well worth the visit. Casual and cozy interior, we ordered our meal at the counter - spicy tuna rolls, miso ramen, the pork cutlet and fried salmon bento boxes. The boxes came with a delicious array of side salads and miso soup, arranged with a lot of care. You can tell the owners take a lot of pride in their food. All the food was perfectly cooked..highlight for me was the fried salmon, which was super crispy but moist and juicy inside. Absolutely delicious meal and I highly recommend visiting!!

My favorite restaurant in the world. Authentic Japanese diner food in the most unlikely of places. I've frequented Yama since ~2015 after I returned from a study abroad trip to Japan, and the quality has never declined. The service is great, the atmosphere is great, and the food is delicious. I urge you to have a meal at Yama; you won't regret it.

What a find! This casual (order & pay at the counter and then seat yourself) gem should be added to your dining list. We ordered spicy tuna rolls, gyoza, shrimp udon and an eel bowl. Everything was fresh and tasty. Yum! I’m sorry we will only be in town overnight because other menu items caught my eye. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Got the shoyu ramen - broth was rich and flavorful and the pork melted in my mouth. I don’t tend to like pork in ramen much but this was just absolutely incredible. 10/10

Me and my wife had a date night and hit this place up after a movie. Food was really good and the customer service was what you hope for! Highly recommend!

Nothing short of killer food. I went with The Spicy Tuna Roll and Chicken Teriyaki. If you’re in Morgantown and you’re lucky enough to catch Yama before they run out of food for the day, eat here!

Normally I would lessen the stars for atmosphere because it is small and crowded but here it really works for the feel. The food was excellent and authentic. The workers were so kind and pleasant. This is a must visit. The only negative are the unusual hours.

What a fantastic little place! Was lucky enough to come through town when they were open. Had a fantastic dinner for a *very* reasonable price. I got vegetable udon (photo), my husband got yaki soba, and we shared an order of veg gyōza. YUM.

I have been driving past this place for years and finally gave it a shot and I’m so glad I did. If you want to try authentic Japanese cuisine, this is the place to do it. I tried the spicy tuna sushi roll, the shrimp dumplings, and the udon noodles. It was all delicious. If you like spice, add the red pepper on the table to your noodles. I can’t wait to come back and try other things!

The food here was magnificent. I tried a Japanese restaurant in Walt Disney World last year, since Disney is known for its delicious and authentic food, and this restaurant gave them a run for their money. They are cheaper and just as good. 10/10 I definitely recommend going here if you love good food and if you want a traditional Japanese eating experience. Even though there is not much decor in the restaurant, it still feels traditional, like everything was hand selected and placed with a lot of thought and effort.

Definitely one of the highlights of Morgantown! The ramen is stellar and the atmosphere looks of a traditional room in Japan; prices aren't too steep either. Service is a tad slow however but it's completely worth it.

This "hidden" gem is worth finding! They serve authentic Japanese cuisine in a cozy, tidy and welcoming environment. The prices are more than reasonable and the employees go out of their way to make sure you are satisfied with your experience. Many items on their menu are vegetarian/vegan or have the option to make them so. Either take out or eat in I can guarantee you will not be disappointed!

What a great little restaurant! The food is incredibly well done with meticulous attention to detail and flavor combinations at a very affordable price. Everyone is extremely welcoming and values their guests. Will definitely need to return to sample new things on the menu! Only wish they were open more often!

Went around 530pm on a Thursday so it wasnt too busy at the time or ordering/sitting down. Ordering was straightforward as menu is laid out well and easy to follow.

By the time we finished at 630, it was a little busy with all tables filled up. I tried their Soba noodles bowl topped with veggie tempura accompanied by a hot tea. Also got a dessert (Sasodango -red bean paste wrapped in bamboo leaf) to finish off the meal.
Im not experienced eating soba noodles with chopstick but managed to finish it without any disasters haha. Tasty and just correctly flavored! 100% would go again.

I have consistently been impressed by the quality of the food and service. The noodles are always cooked to perfection and the broth is full of depth and flavor. Yama has truly brought a piece of Japan to our college town. The staff are also incredibly friendly and welcoming, making every visit feel like a warm embrace. If you're a fan of authentic Japanese cuisine, this is the place to go. I give it a resounding five stars

Every positive review or kind word spoken about this restaurant pales in comparison to the reality. Like, I wish there was a 6th star. I've never wanted to rate a restaurant higher than Yama. Take that however you want, but I can tell you that I get to travel throughout WV and nationally for work so I've been to a restaurant or two. Also, my credentials: I'm a discerning fat guy.

We went here when on the road for work. When we were walking out, my supervisor said, "Those people were so nice. Like, I feel like we should send them a Christmas card or something." It wasn't Christmas.

I left the restaurant feeling so good. I felt good on every aspect--down to my soul.

Yama hits ALL the notes in just the right way.

Good Japanese home cooking. Small, often busy place. Friendly owners, staff, and patrons! I make a point to eat here at least every week! Check their Facebook page for hours--they change.

Oh, how I love Yama! I spent a month in Japan once and I always recapture that experience here. Great, authentic food.
