Apothecary Houghton

Yesterday, with my husband and I both sick, we had trouble getting what we needed from another pharmacy. The kind individuals at The Apothecary were proactive and helped us to get the right medications. One of their staff even offered to stay past closing if necessary! They have also helped us to get better prices than from larger, chain pharmacies. We are very grateful for The Apothecary and their dedicated employees.

This place served my needs well all the years i lived in Houghton. I love the Apothecary. They offer education on new prescriptions and refreshers on long used ones. Staff is helpful and kind. As a person of a certain age, now I take advantage of the delivery service which is top notch! I found years ago that while I thought I was saving money using Walmart’s $4 prescriptions I was not. The Apothecary charged me $2.50 for the same thing. They are very competitive or less when pricing both my prescription and OTC needs. They always serve me professionally and courteously. 😀

I was visiting Houghton in July and experienced some medical problems that required an emergency room visit, followed by the need for a prescription. There were some problems with my medical insurance so the employees called my pharmacy in Arizona to get the needed information. They filled my script and then the pharmacist, Nate, explained carefully how I was to use my inhaler, and had me try it on a sample inhaler until he was sure I could use it correctly. All in all, the experience was a great example of good customer care and excellent service.

While on vacation in the area I started to come down with something and I didn't want it to ruin our time there. I searched for the nearest pharmacy and found this little gem. The pharmacist was quick to come around the counter and offer her help. She took the time to help me find the medicine that best suited my needs even though I'm sure she was busy. This was likely due to me looking lost while staring at the large assortment of choices for a minute or two - something I didn't expect for a small town store. Amazing selection of stuff and great service.

Toward the end of the year, the cost of my medications began rising significantly. The "Donut Hole" as it’s called hit full force. The local pharmacies I had previously used were unable to offer any alternatives and, since I didn’t qualify for help with my heart medication, I was stuck. This was until I called Apothecary Houghton, at the SDC in Houghton. The pharmacist researched options and was able to provide my medication at a fraction of the cost I was prepared to pay elsewhere.

Would I recommend this pharmacy? Absolutely.

I've dealt with many pharmacies and this is by far the nicest with a great staff. Everyone is so friendly

Does not have a system to call when your prescription is ready, which is a pain when some are special order and take 1-3 days to arrive.

Do not go to this pharmacy!! They clearly have no quality control. They recently gave my husband a prescription labeled quinidine, used to treat irregular heart beat, with a massive dose of an anti-psychotic drug. If he had followed their directions and taken the prescribed amount it might have killed him.

3 years ago they sent me home with someone else's prescription. At least that one was correctly labeled so I knew not to take it.
