Our daughter had her wedding in Newport on Bowens Wharf. The Outlook Inn was a perfect location within walking distance to the waterfront. It includes parking and a very delicious breakfast, too. The beds were heavenly and the bathrooms immaculate. We’d highly recommend this Inn if your traveling to Newport.

This was a really awful experience from start to finish.

The concise review:
A lot of ants, a lot of mold, a non-functioning kitchen and an extremely difficult property management company. You won’t have a relaxing vacation. You will have nonstop aggravation which “professional” staff will exacerbate rather than alleviate.

The details:
I am going to focus on the biggest issues because there’s not enough room to document everything.

Ants:
1st night of check-in my wife noticed a few ants. No big deal we thought. On the 2nd night we came back to the unit and the kitchen counter – which just had 2 apples on it (i.e. it’s not like we trashed the place) – was crawling with ants. Disgusting. We threw out the apples and stored our food out of the kitchen from that point forward. The ants came and went as they pleased.

Every black dot in the photos of the kitchen counter are ants. There were plenty more outside the picture too. Had I known what difficulty management would give me I would have taken better focused photos.

No Baking Trays:
Kitchen looks great in photos (ants weren’t in pictures). We planned on cooking in the unit the 1st night we got there. We settled in and our 3 kids under 6 are hungry. I go to make dinner and there are no baking trays. Spent literally 15 minutes searching every conceivable spot. Under the oven. In the oven. Every cabinet in the kitchen & island. No baking trays, roasting pan, or anything I could actually use in the oven. I thought maybe I could use a pan but they just have nonstick pans which I don’t believe are oven safe. While no baking trays – or any alternative – may not sound like a hassle, it completely screwed up our dinner plans, wasted a lot of time looking for them and then contacting management about the issue, and for any parent traveling with kids, you know how difficult it is having hungry kids and then scrambling to find an alternative.

Dishwasher didn’t work:
Go to run the dishwasher on the 3rd day of our stay. Doesn’t work. Another call to maintenance. More aggravation on our vacation.

Mold all over the shower:
The 1st floor shower in our bedroom had a ton of mold on the ceiling. I am guessing the cleaning crew can’t reach it, so they let it grow unchecked. Fun! Also, not mold related, but the showerhead itself was unclipped/ajar. Very sketch.

Uncaring and Unprofessional Management:
What really exacerbates the above issues are the interactions with management. The customer rep you interact with (i.e. the person the picks up the phone) is rude. They let it be known you are bothering them. Hey, I get it, I’m bothered having to contact them too! Someone was in one of our parking spots, their response was to park elsewhere. My in-laws are elderly, I paid a premium for a 2nd parking space in front of the unit, I don’t want them having to walk far. Their response, what do you want me to do.

I have spoken with 3 different employees about these issues and asked for a partial credit. All 3 employees that spoke with me keep kicking the can down the road. It’s not their decision. They keep “escalating” but not to someone who can authorize a refund. I honestly think they are just trying to run out the clock on the window to leave a review. Having to report and document each issue is extremely frustrating.

Some free advice: all they had to do was say we are so sorry about all of the issues. It is not the standard we want to set. Here’s a bottle of wine. That’s a pretty basic response. Instead they pass you around from person to person each one giving less of a care than the first one.

What.A.Headache.

Other issues which I didn’t feel like elaborating on:
-Shower head being ajar/loose – I really hope there wasn’t a camera or something in there
-Stains on 2nd floor chairs
-Broken drawer handle in 1st floor bedroom

There’s a lot of nice places in Newport. Just go elsewhere. Avoid any and all Vacation Newport rentals. The units are not kept up and management is just punching a clock. They’re not there to solve any problems, just make excuses.
