I photographed one of my favorite weddings at the Virginia City Depot a few years ago. This venue and surrounding historic district might be one of the most authentic rustic wedding venues in the state.

It’s a special place and feels like you are stepping back in time in the most charming of ways.

Between Nevada City and Virginia City, my wedding clients and I took advantage of the fantastic Old West architecture and explored the area making fun photos of the bride, groom, and their bridal party along the way.
The bride and groom got ready in Nevada City and to reach the ceremony, we all took a ride on the Virginia City Shortline Railroad. The train traveled a relaxing one mile over to the wedding ceremony site at the Virginia City Depot. It was a huge hit with all in attendance.
After these newlyweds tied the knot, we walked the streets of historic downtown Virginia City making couples portraits along the way. Eventually, we steered our procession over to the Virginia City Community Center where we spent the night dancing, playing in a photo booth, and celebrating these two amazing people. It was such a fun day in such a beautiful part of Montana.

If you’re looking for a truly rustic Montana wedding day, the Virginia City Depot is an amazing option. I highly recommend it!

My family had such a great weekend in Virginia City and Navada City. Great restraints, lots of gems found in our gold pans. The live museum was fun and interesting. And the short train ride was fun as well. I'm already planning my next family day trip there as we speak.
It's a must see, even if you only have a few hours. I recommend the live theater in the opra house.

You can just walk through town along with Nevada City. Plenty to see. Go eat in Ennis afterwards.

We had fun riding the tour train & listening to mining history about the area. It's been years since it's been this green in August in Montana, it was really nice. I'd do it again, especially if they pull out the number 12 steam locomotive.

Fun train ride! We were on the last one of the day so it was up and back with only a 10 minute stop in between. Recorded commentary on the way back was informative and Shoreview. The cities rolled up the walks at 5:00! Nothing was left to do but drive back.

A lot of historic displays. Fun and entertaining. We were there on Saturday with a group of 35 seniors. Some walking involved. Mostly flat, though.

Fun little train. You are required to select times as they fill up. If you are going from Virginia City to Nevada City we only needed an hour to go through Nevada City. We were informed we would need two, so our ticket back was two hours after we arrived. Luckily the had space available on the earlier train.

It was a fun train ride to learn some history and see scenery from virginia city to Nevada city .plus another family event to do something different together and would recommend tickets ahead of time. Plus make sure you plan enough time to see and visit and explore the things to do in virginia city and Nevada city

This little historic town was soooo friggin cool! Most definitely my favorite part was the train ride to Nevada City. Hubby and I panned for gold and got some really pretty garnet in a cute little vile for a souvenir. We got to vergina city at about 9 am. And walked through all of the different shops they had back then. I was very surprised with how much their is to look at. It was nice getting their a little early before all the other shops opened to really take our time looking at all the history. When 10 rolled around we got in line for the train which departed at 11. They were also a tad early in both the depot and the train. Rather than late. Which I liked alot as well. We had to get back to idaho falls before to late so we only had so much time. So we ate lunch at bobs pizza place. That place was very delicious and full of sweet helpful ladies! We will most definitely be back to enjoy longer and possibly do the ghost tour! Thanks for a wonderful time!

Here at the Virginia City Depot is where to purchase train tickets. The train is not a steam engine but is still fun to ride.

You schedule train rides at the depot, tickets are $10 for adults $8 for kids.

This is a narrated tour. They give you a history lesson and some fun facts as you make the 20 minute trip down to Nevada City. Nevada City is a mile and a half away but the train only goes 5mph.

It takes an hour round trip. So plan your day wisely as its best to come in the early mornings. They can only fit so many people on a train at one time so spots can fill up quick.

They open at 10:00am and the first train will depart from there shortly after 10:00am as well.

You have options to either come right back or stay down in Nevada City for awhile. You just have to write down what train time you will be on, so they dont overfill a train and you can return to your original destination.

The train runs from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Leaving Virginia City at the top of the hour and departing from Nevada City on the bottom of the hour. The last run is at 5:00pm and is a one way and will not return to the Virginia Depot, as it will rest in the train barn down in Nevada City for the night. The last round trip train ride is at 4:00pm and right back at 4:30pm. Or you can catch the 4:30pm train in Nevada City and take the 5:00pm train straight back.

This was such a fun place! The shops were so neat and the people were all very nice and helpful. I would return here again. My only regret was that I couldn't spend more time in Virginia City Montana.

This is a good place to start when you get to Virginia City. They can answer questions about things to do. They sell train tickets, Nevada City museum tickets, etc, but they are also happy to tell you about free things you can see and about other tours available.
