Turkey Run Park

Went to the Turkey run and heritage loop last week. Very nice riverside view, muddy road, little creek, super interesting trial.

A great place for a hike close to the city if you don’t have an entire day to devote to getting into the woods. One of my favorites. Can be quite rocky at parts.

Beautiful trails thru the woods and down to the Potomac River. At least one water crossing to get to the Potomac Heritage Trail, so be sure to wear good shoes! Super friendly and helpful staff at the Park Headquarters. Restrooms in a small separate building (didn't use, but do seem to be serviced regularly).

Great escape from the city, directly off of the GW Parkway. You are able to step up to the Potomac, but also into the trails off of it.

Fairly easy, but there is a steep decline, with stairs, so for some it's a bit more challenging. For most, it's not bad at all.

My go to easy hike, very convient for me to go to since i live close by. You get good views of the potomac. There is an easier overland trail (dont go down the stairs for the overland trail). If you want to go through narrow trails that apparently lead to teddy roosevelt island, go down the stairs and take a right. Downside of this trail is that it isn’t well maintained and there are some big time grassy and thorny areas. Watch out.

This was an awesome hike for our family to take. Beautifil scenery throughout the whole area. Hard to believe this is where it is. We look forward to going back here soon. I would really like to see it in the fall and winter months.

We took the American Legion bridge. It is the longest one. It's is easy to get lost when you need to cross the river. Be patient, read signs and decide which one you want to go.

This is a fun hike and you're right along the water for a good part of it! There are several stairs, and part where we crossed the water (I didn't get a picture of that part because we ran into a group there). It's a beautiful path but the water!

Great little hiking spots with a few steep climbs. It has a few trails - Heritage Trail, Dead Run, American Legion Bridge - all along the Potomac. Park at C1 and head down hill to access the trails. The American Legion Bridge trail is rocky in a spot with a little waterfall. This area will be challenging for kids below 8 and for pets. Turkey Run itself, while steep, does not have many challenging sections. It has one rocky stream bed section. The trails are well marked but the trails can be confusing. Allow yourself some time to return so you don't get lost.

Great for quiet and calm walks. The parking access road needs a bit of love. Let's keep it calm and pristine!

It is a very fun trail, many crossings of runs,there are two places that need the tops to help cross. Follow the blue then yellow/orange marks.

If coming from East, go past park headquarters and turn right after the Turkey Run Park sign.

Coming from West is straight forward, just turn at Turkey Park sign.

Under half a mile to the water if you park at C1. Lots of steps!

Under half a mile to a gorgeous waterfall if you park at B or A. Use AllTrials app to find trail.

I was surprised when I found wonderful water features. Great place to hike right next to the Potomac river. It's a part of the heritage trail.

I believe it’s under some kind of construction or reason. Park is close. GWPW is under construction too.

The best attraction at Turkey Run Park is the access to the many beautiful tumbling waterfalls on Dead Run. To reach Dead Run, park in “Area C-1” at Turkey Run Park and hike about one mile up river on the Potomac Heritage Trail to Dead Run.

A beautiful trail with great views of the Potomac River. Definitely a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Washington DC.

This is a great walk for a dog. Parking at the first entrance, it's about a mile walk to a stream. Nice hills and a well kept path are wonderful features.

Excellent hiking that’s fairly easily accessible. There’s a few stream crossings to keep things interesting. There are usually a few paths across the water so you can choose your own adventure (and difficulty). Plenty of places to stop along the water for scenic photos and to climb on rocks. You can choose to hike however long you want - Theodore Roosevelt Island is 8 miles southeast and the American Legion Bridge is 2 miles northwest.

Parking is free but it didn’t seem like there was a ton of parking. That might be an issue on a warm weekends, so plan accordingly.
