The reservation went great. I picked it up early on a Thursday afternoon. Was offered and upgrade for just $10. I took the rental agent up on the over(best decision ever). The customer service during my visit was stellar. The entire process took maybe 5 minutes. I will be renting again from this company and sharing the great experience with my friends!

It was cheap and the car was fine, but for God's sake don't feel the need to make ANY changes to your reservation. I have so far spent more than an hour chatting with people online and calling various numbers. The only people that can help me are, apparently, the ones at the counter of the airport where I picked the car up, but every option on the automated system for that number, including pressing nothing, transfers me to the larger customer service center not even for Payless (larger "sister" company.) They give me the number for Payless. Payless people give me the number for the counter. Counter automatically transfers me to the larger sister company. There is no end in sight for this cycle.

Wait was an hour. One person working counter. Speaking with others in line long waits on Saturday are the norm. So is one person working the counter. Was also told the counter suffers from mechanical/computer issues that have been reported to management but not fixed.

Nice car, clean, quick service. However, they make their bills very confusing and they tacked on all these extra charges that I did not agree to. I had to call and now there’s an open case to review it. Kind of a headache.

UPDATE (10/6): Removing a star. I have kept following up with customer service but have not heard back. I was overcharged by at least $70. It ended up being $200 to rent a car for 24 hours. Jeez. And now a headache to get their bill reconciled (there are multiple charges that are not explained). I will not be using Payless again.

UPDATE (10/21): Removing another star. I have not heard back from Payless so I had to call them. Their customer service rep was rude and wouldn't really answer my question about what a specific fee was for (she just kept saying it was included). So annoying. They also said they didn't have my email on file even though I have been emailing them with my case number and rental agreement, like I was told. Terrible customer service.

I will never use Payless or Avis Car Rental again. We rented a 7 passenger van in Washington DC. Got a 6 passenger SUV. Tried to get it changed. The customer service was non existent. We ended up making additional arrangements so our family could have the family trip that we planned. Extra gas and parking charges because we didn't receive the 7 passenger vehicle that we needed. I'm only giving this a one star because that's the lowest it will allow - it should be a minus rating.
Newest update, Payless refunded me for the day early that I took the car back. They responded to the 6 passenger vehicle vs the 7 passenger vehicle, stating that they were in the same category. I rented a van not a SUV. At the time that I made the reservation, a SUV would have been cheaper for me to rent, but I needed a 7 passenger vehicle. I don't think that 7 passenger and 6 passenger is in the same category - especially when we had 7 passengers and only 6 seat belts, putting our family in danger. DON'T RENT FROM, PAYLESS OR AVIS - THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CUSTOMER SERVICE IF YOU NEED IT.

Writing this review hoping to get someone's attention. I turned in a pickup truck I rented and forgot my wallet in the center console. Once I realized my mistake, I tried calling this location to see if they could go out to the vehicle, but the phone number was for costumer service, not for this location. Spent more than an hour on hold, in which time the vehicle was rented out again, and no wallet was turned in. I realize I'm at fault for leaving my wallet in the car, but no one has communicated with me on whether or not the car has been turned back in to check for the wallet, even after multiple calls to "customer service" and even more emails. Wanted to know just so I could have some closure, but no one seems to have any empathy to even take 3 minutes to communicate anything, so thank you for making this situation so much more difficult.

Took quite a while to pick up my rental, which isn't too bad but could have been smoother. My rental is for work travel and I was told that since it is over 30 days, all I simply had to do was to call the company and inform them of the mileage on the vehicle. I have literally called on 6 separate occasions and still was unable to have anyone assist me. The only alternate option would be for me to drive 1 hour back to the airport to have a technician visually look at the odometer and extend the rental for 1 week. I just noticed this morning that I have a $300 dollar charge on my credit card for 1 week rental.

Do yourself a favor and believe the 1.9 star service rating for this car rental company is TRUE.
The car I rented in Philly was dirty, smelly, vibrated and had worn out wipers that made it very difficult for me to drive in a rain storm.
When I went to return the car by 7:30 am the lot was closed and no drop box or anything. Had to call and thorough a series of voice messages indicating where to drop off the car somewhere else 1/2 a mile distance where you could also take a shuttle and notify the company. If you are pressing time to catch a flight is not pleasant to be figuring this out last minute.

Horrible experience. We specifically needed a 7 passenger car and were given 6 seats. We called multiple times and were given absolutely no help. We were hung up on multiple times and when we finally spoke to someone, were told 6 is similar to 7 and there’s nothing they could do. We then had to spend our whole 12 day trip driving two cars instead of the one we specifically rented to avoid having to pay for an additional car. We just received an additional bill for ‘cleaning’ with pictures showing minimal dirt etc. There was nothing in out agreement about cleaning the car. We will absolutely NEVER rent with this company again. The complete lack of customer service, and additional charges were unacceptable. Go somewhere else for a rental, no price is worth the experience.

Our contract said 7 seats, we were given 6. The next day, we called to make a swap. After several phone calls to the company, even being hung up on, we received no help. This was rotten of Payless because when we picked up the vehicle, we were assured by their staff it was a 7-passenger vehicle. (We discovered we didn't have enough seat belts when we picked up our remaining party later). This alone ruined our trip.

However, when we returned the vehicle we were notified that the floor mats were what they called "damaged." The company sent photos--if you were to review these photos, it would be clear that the mats were not damaged, they were dirty. And the mats should have been dirty, we had the car for 12 days. Payless adds and takes away whatever they want in their agreement. Do not rent from this company or you will eventually regret doing business with them.

Like other reviewers have experienced, we received a letter for unexpected extra charges A MONTH after we dropped off our rental - ours was for "superficial damages" to the outside of the car (this is what they said when we called customer service). It seems like this is their standard practice, maybe to make up for their low rental prices? After this experience, I will never get a car through this company again and would rather pay a little more at a legitimate company. Total scam!
