Oakland Public Library

Libraries are fast becoming an item of a bygone era with the internet but its spaces still have a lot of potential. The lower floors have lending sections but the archives on the second floor is where the magic is.

This is like the only place that allows to borrow console games like Wii/wii u, Nintendo switch and Xbox!

Public libraries are the examples of democracy!!! Oakland's are some of the best!!!

I've visited a few times within the past month after not having gone by here since the lockdown started in March 2020. I'm glad to see the overall facilities generally looking fresh. It's great to have this community resource fully reopened and running again.

This place is incredible! I mean come on, it’s the freakin Oakland Public Library! Amazing staff, great selection, and a myriad of amazing resources stacked tall here for our community members. Love love love my Oakland Public Library!

Beautiful library! A couple things that might be useful to know:
Large print jobs are discouraged, but they only tell you once you get there with a dozen documents you're supposed to print in twenty minutes. They only have one printer and it's pretty slow.
They can't give receipts for printing, but you could have taken a picture of the invoice screen if you'd have known.

A no-frills library that is situated right in the heart of the community. Oddly out of date and feels tiny given it's the main location for the system. I'm sure it's been said before, but I could imagine a complete remodel or even a rebuild of the building to make it a bit more contemporary.

Staff is always nice and helpful. There's a children's section in the basement and teenzone on the 2nd floor that serves free lunch on wed/fri 11:30-12:30. The 1st floor has paper backs, mystery, fiction, and non-fiction, and reference book on different subjects. There is also computers to use. Bathrooms are on the second floor. There a two different graphic novel sections (1st floor by computers and teen zone by computers). I went today and it wasn't too busy. Most people were using the computers.

Great community space. Not the newest or cleanest building but I honestly don’t care, I’m not looking for luxury in a public library.

Think it's great that local libraries still exist. Great location downtown with friendly knowledgeable staff. Library cards are free. How great is that? I'm sorry others found it a bad experience.

Maybe Cruz my Gramps was a librarian. After being a Marine. Respect Libraries. This one is like Harry Potter with an Oaklandish spin. Oh, & they fired Harry and all the Potters.

Ms Kathy whom is the supervisory authority there is extremely kind, courteous, and knowledgeably comforting to me each and every time
Always accommodates me without me having to say a word and makes sure that the staff members under her assists me also
