I had a delightful assortment of treats from Ruby King Bakery Café, including a dozen egg tarts, 6 curry beef puffs, and an 8-inch Mixed Fruit birthday cake, all totaling around $55.

The standout feature of this bakery is undoubtedly their superbly crafted, flaky pastries. The real star of the show was the Mixed Fruit birthday cake. If you find traditional store-bought birthday cakes overly sweet, Ruby King Bakery Café offers a perfect alternative. The sponge of the cake was exceptionally soft, and the overall sweetness was just right—not overpowering.

The combination of great value and high quality makes Ruby King Bakery Café a must-visit for pastry enthusiasts. I highly recommend it, especially if you prefer a more balanced and less sugary birthday cake experience.

*Tip: I placed a phone call to order the birthday cake two days in advance, though it seems they also have ready-to-go birthday cakes available in-store.

Very nice flaky pastries. Had a curry beef puff, chicken pie and coconut twist. The fillings for the savory stuff were actually quite sweet, which balanced out the pastry which isn’t very sweet at all. Made the mistake of eating the coconut twist in my office, which spread crumbs all over the place. Would recommend eating outside because it’s so flaky.

Would love to try the Dan tat next time — they sold out by the time I came!

Best authentic HK egg tarts by far 👍🏻 the rest of the items not quite worth trying though. Lotsa old folks hanging around the cafe, it's fun to see these seniors just catching up spending time together.

Visiting from Irvine and decided to stop and get some egg tarts! Better than any place I’ve tried down there, very flaky crust and the egg yolk is sweet but not too sweet!

Have been patronizing this establishment for decades, and nothing's changed. If you want authentic HK/Macau baked goods at a very reasonable price, this is it; Sheng Kee ain't the place to go🤩 (unless you're ok paying 2X$ for so-so product). There are a couple of similar bakeries in the neighborhood, and to be fair, they're just as good. BART is a good xportation for Oakland Chinatown. Just a short 5 minute walk, but exercise Situational Awareness. There was a rash of strong-arm robberies of the elderly by cowardly types, who would be presenting themselves at Highland Hosp ER for "sudden onset, acute lead poisoning" had I been victimized. Joking aside, I usually see two Oakland's Finest OPD squad cars in Chinatown.

Great place to hang out in the morning and the place opens early. You’ll have competition for tables from the “regulars”. You won’t go wrong with the coffee and freshly baked white or yellow egg custard tart.

Their freshly baked char-shiu pineapple bun is the best I’ve had in a very long time.

Ruby King is a hole in the wall bakery, overshadowed by the Napolean bakery up the block. Ruby King has some amazing, flaky, egg tarts ($1), bbq puff pastry and curry beef puff pastry. They are best when you get them early in the morning when they are still hot. You have to ask for the egg tarts, they are not on the display shelf. Their mini apple pie is pretty good too with chunks of apples inside. Great customer service.

Great HK egg tarts here and pricing is cheaper than the more famous counterparts. It’s been a while since I’ve had GGB, so I can’t comment on how it compares, but I enjoyed the flavor of Ruby King’s custard and the flaky, buttery layers. If you don’t get a fresh one, I recommend reheating in the microwave.

Other than the egg tart, my favorite thing here was the curry beef puff! Loved the curry filling and extra flaky pastry. I thought the filling ratio was good - did not feel like they were skimping. BBQ pork bun was also solid. Cash only.

Boichik Bagels, Rotha, Bouchon Bakery. Places I wished were opened closer to me in San Francisco. Right along that list is Ruby King. Egg tarts are top notch! Grab a cup of milk tea, a cocktail bun, a ham and egg pastry and you have yourself a great breakfast! Add a white egg tart for a morning or afternoon treat!

This shop has really good egg tarts with super flaky crusts. If you're going to get egg tarts in Oakland, this is the place to go! As of March 2020 they're $1 apiece.

I always come here for birthday cakes. Tell them what you want written on it and it's done! Tasty, not too sweet and light. Perfection every time and theyve been doing it for decades. And as far as Chinatown goes, the ladies speak pretty good English.

Super Delicious ! I been coming here since my Father brought me when I was little. Love it so much, and I always come here for a sweet desert. My All Time Favorite is the Vanilla Assorted Rolls. The best . Love you Ruby King Bakery!

Very crispy and flaky egg tart. Right amount of sweetness. Also like their pineapple bun. Surprisedly good of their little chick cookie; chewy and tasty.

Super casual Chinese bakery cafe. Most days you'll find groups of older Chinese men sipping coffee and enjoying a pastry. This is our go to place for fresh cream rolled cakes. The egg tarts are nice and flakey and the pineapple buns are ginormous.

Love the Chinese pastries here, especially the eggs tarts and lemon roll cake. You get all the good old classic pastries here, which is all I want anyways. If you are looking for modern pastries like that if 85C, then this is not for you.

LOVE their cocktail bun (#1 on the menu on the wall, but it's stored warmed in the oven so you won't see it in the case). Definitely get that when you are there!

Good priced, flaky and good quality pastries. Not the bun selection like Napoleon up the street but still worth going for what they have; clearly popular with the locals in the morning. Do yourself a favor and come here and Napoleon too.
