If you're looking for some freshly baked Chinese pastries, Napoleon Super Bakery is a great place to visit. The baos are delightfully fresh and very reasonably priced. I love the filled pineapple buns here - the fillings are not to sweet and generous and the cookie topping is crumbly and delicious. I will note that the egg tarts are good, but I personally like the ruby rival's down the street a little bit more - I think the crust is flakier there - but these are still solid egg tarts that I wouldn't turn down. Like most Chinese bakeries, the staff don't speak much English and can be gruff, but the pastries are WORTH IT. Be bold...go get those baos!

Found Napoleon Super Bakery off of Yelp and so glad I did :D

Most part of downtown Oakland aren't the best. Napoleon is in Chinatown. Streets are a bit dirty, and doesn't smell too great. Be aware of your surroundings. Street parking and be sure to read the signs!

Now on to the good parts! I was a bit unsure how it would actually taste, so I first ordered 2 egg tarts and a pineapple bun. Went back to the car to eat (since the smells of the street were potent) and devoured both quickly.

The egg tart is made well. Although not hot, it still had a great ratio of crust to custard. My comparison would be to Golden Gate Bakery. If you eat the egg tart from Golden Gate Bakery, they are still usually hot/warm when you eat it...but Napoleon's tasted just as good as Golden Gate Bakery imo if you waited a few hours. Also, we stopped by about an hour before closing, so I wasn't expecting anything hot. The plain pineapple bun were good too, so we decided to go back and order more :D

I decided to order another half dozen of the egg tarts, some coconut tarts, cake, and a few pineapple buns. Pretty much anything they had available, I grabbed some to try it out so I could share with family.

I didn't really get the prices, but it is definitely an awesome bang for your buck. I think normally the egg tarts are $1.50, but they mentioned since the crusts came out not up to their normal standard, they lowered the price to $1.30. I waited 1-2 days after to finish an egg tart and it was still so good without heating it up too!

I am highly recommending Napoleon Super bakery. I hope maybe I can come in the morning one time (if I'm in the area), so I can see if they have hot baked goods available. If I'm near the Oakland area, I will ALWAYS try to stop by Napoleon to grab some treats :)

We ordered a 10-inch multi-fruit birthday cake. It was very moist and had good sweetness level. It tasted very good. Too bad we didn't have time to try the other pastries.

There is a line outside the door pretty regularly. With limited parking, we drove around in circles with a person waiting in line. After a few rounds, the line would shrink and grow again. Expect a wait.

Such a great bakery, and definitely one of the cheapest in town. Recommend the Portuguese egg tart and the custard polo. The egg tart was deliciously flaky and fragrant, while the custard polo had a great texture and traditional Chinese style custard.

Cash only here!

I came for their delicious egg tarts! Sooo yummy fresh and warm. They are currently $1.25 each.

I personally prefer Golden Gate's for crust layer texture, but Napoleon's can't be beat for East Bay convenience.

They do sell out later in the day, so don't come too late. Additionally, their line can be a bit all over the place so be assertive to place an order and don't let others cut in front of you!

The best Chinese bakery in Oakland Chinatown. Classic Hong Kong pastries - egg custard (dan tat), “pineapple” bread (bo lo nap); bbq pork bun (cha siu bao); and much more. At around 5 pm, there’s always a line in front of the store, all unsold items are price reduced.

This place I've been going here for many years. And I always like their bread and I've gotten their cake. Everything's so yummy. I've gone here with friends and family. Would highly recommend to go here. :D
And recommendation, go here by noon as in later in the evening there are a bit less options so the earlier the better. :)

A great place to get baked Chinese goods. The ham and corn bun are tasty! The scallion buns are savory and always hit the spot. I will always visit this place when I’m in town or passing through! A definite recommendation!!!

Best Chinese bakery I’ve been to. Service is fast too, and you can get away without speaking English. Cash only though!

If you ever walk past this place when it opens at 7am and don't stop in for a fresh egg tart and at least 3 BBQ pork buns, you've made a terrible mistake.

I can't really add anything else to that, they're great and I may have accidentally ordered "hot dog buns" from there. Then purposefully did so later, because they're delicious too.

This is one of my favorite bakeries in the Bay Area!! There are so many chinese bakeries and this one is truly a standout. Everything I’ve tried, from the egg tarts to the pork floss buns, have been so delicious. The bread is always super fluffy and the perfect balance of sweet to savory, their egg tarts are flaky and just the right amount of eggy, and their pineapple buns wonderfully crusty. They also make birthday/wedding/occasion cakes, which have been popular with my partner’s family for over a decade. The cakes are so fluffy and filled with whipped cream and fresh fruit, and always get that Asian compliment: ‘not too sweet’!

A very popular bakery in Oakland Chinatown. Cash only.

I grew up here and this place was my go to for Chinese bakery goods.

Love their egg tarts. The crust is flakey and if you’re lucky, they’ll still be warm when you buy them! They do run out though, so the best time to go get them is in the morning.

Reasonable prices. Their walnut pound cakes and cream rolls are out of this world.
Both the stores in Chinatown SF and Oakland are easy to get to.
Please remember to bring cash.
A birthday coming up and you forgot. There is always a last minute cake you can get at Napoleon. Their fruit cakes are good, inexpensive, and not sweet.

Great pineapple buns (similar taste to King's Hawaiian rolls but with a crunchy sweet top) - $2.50 for 5. And decent egg custard tarts, though not as good as Golden Gate in SF. Assorted layer cakes look great and very affordable- cheaper than Safeway!

Everything here is so good, fresh, and cheap! Plus, they have an abundance of variety from egg tarts which are the best, to different breads, to frozen wontons, to cake rolls and cakes. Every time my family eats in Oakland, we come here afterward to buy bread and buns. So cheap, so fresh, so delicious! Also often times their egg tarts are hot, yum!

There’s always a queue when I go, but it moves fairly fast. MUST order the egg tarts. The custard is lovely!

Really good selection of fresh buns, definitely a must have. The baked char siu bun is the best I've had, and I typically don't like it because most places don't do it well. The steamed man tau and bao are also worth getting, at least fresh made in the morning. Can't comment on the other pastries but they look decent too.
