The Butcher Shop

The Butcher Shop is a classic spot in Kearny Mesa near the 163 freeway. It’s a classy, Chicago-style steakhouse with a nice atmosphere and cool old school seating and lamps. The waitresses are all very kind and easy to talk to. The steaks are really tasty, especially the ribeye with Gorgonzola. I also really love the wedge salad (which is huge), spicy Paloma cocktail, French onion soup, and crème brûlée. Prices aren’t outrageous either—if you’re looking for a classic steakhouse experience in a nice atmosphere for a decent price tag, The Butcher Shop should certainly be a contender!

The bartender was the best part of the meal. Enjoyed sitting at the bar and listening to the stories of San Diego over the decades. Loved the chowder and French onion soup. The pork chop and prime rib were great. It may be pricey but it’s a classic steakhouse. I’ve had much worse and much better for the same price but you don’t get the old-fashioned restaurant vibe like you do here.

We've been coming here for over 15 years. When it comes to the meat/filet/prime rib and drinks you can't go wrong. On this occasion we had a party of 11 where we receive superior service and treatment from their banquet manager Claudia. We made the reservation a week in advanced and shared with her that it was a post Christmas party with close friends, some who had flown in from out of town. We were also jointly celebrating a birthday. She took care of us from start to finish. From the time I called the restaurant to discuss our large party and our special needs, to keep in touch in the days leading up to the dinner. She was a great and attentive host to us who treated us warmly with her expert knowledge. And despite our larger party she was able to accommodate my request to have access to the full menu. I felt the quality of food and price were on target and we had food still to take home. Even with the drinks we ordered the prices were reasonable and we did not feel gouged. She even hugged me when she greeted me at the restaurant. Can't say enough great things about this gem of a steakhouse. Aside from the food and service it has great character, I'm sure that's why it's lasted for so many years in San Diego! I wish I had taken photos of the food but we were so wrapped up in enjoying the company we didn't get a chance to.

Attended a catered event. The atmosphere is very nice, reminiscent of classic Las Vegas steak house. The salad was very fresh and tasty with an excellent dressing. The steak was fantastic. Tender, juicy, and served medium rare, which is something I usually I don't prefer, but this was a treat. The mashed potatoes were perfectly seasoned and very fresh. Service was prompt and pleasant. Great place to host a catered event.

Great atmosphere and great steak! Got the porterhouse with the trio of sauces and mashed potatoes. Will be coming back soon :)

Their prime rib with fries cooked with duck fat was excellent.

Nice little hidden gem in Kearny Mesa. If you’re looking for a reasonably priced steak you have to visit the Butcher Shop! A lot has changed here in the past few years, but the food is still on point. My favorite sides are the Brussels Sprouts and the Mashed Potatoes. The side portions are big enough to share and they also bring out bread before your meal so keep that in mind when ordering. They have a full bar and will also make you whatever you would like to drink. The vibe is great in here and the service was pretty great.

I must tell you I have been going to the butcher shop for well over 40 years. I noticed before Covid they had a massive falling off and the food and service was not good at all. Now let’s fast forward to today. I went there with a group of friends, and it was an awesome experience. The food was absolutely perfect and so were the waitresses. I can’t tell you what the new owner whoever they are has done to this restaurant, but the butcher shop is back! The food was reasonably priced compared to other steakhouses, but the quality was top-notch. Do yourself a favor and return to this restaurant for an excellent meal as I just did.

Organized a holiday dinner for 30 people here. Mike, the event manager was very helpful and attentive through my whole planning process. He was kind and understanding and very accompanying to my request. We had the Board room, for 40 people, it was just the right size for the group.

The food was of course delicious and Cicely portioned. Our wait staff was excellent and friendly and attentive as well.

Phenomenal food and excellent service! The fried calamari was fresh with minimal breading. The 10oz filet mignon was cooked to utter perfection. It was tender, juicy, and melted in your mouth. The mashed potatoes were extra thick, savory, and delicious. The shrimp scampi along with its buttery sauce was to die for. The shrimps were excellently prepared. Now lastly, to our surprise, the best part of our dinner? The garlic bread. Yes really. We had garlic bread with the french onion soup. It was amazing. The manager greeted us when we first arrived and showed us around the restaurant along with all the signed portraits of the Hollywood superstars. Amazing experience 👏

The prime rib was top notch. We got a flight of their steak butters/sauces as well which made each bite unique. Would recommend.

We were there for brunch for a party of 20+. We were warmly welcomed and immediately seated. The food was fresh and hot and very tasty. Our servers were very attentive. We will definitely be back.

WOW is what I can say!

The service is worth 10 stars; the food was excellent! Our waitress stay on top of everything and it was my brother and his wife’s 45 wedding anniversary to share with everyone

They made the dessert special and the manager came over and greeted our group personally!!

That made everything worth while especially my family cam all the way out here from Louisiana to celebrate this occasion!!

Awesome food and excellent staff.

Went in for our anniversary wanting a nice big piece of prime rib. Ordered it and then the waitress came back and said that no prime rib is ready to be served. Ended up with a steak and it was really good but I wanted prime rib. The prime rib came with size the steak didn't so it cost me almost $20 extra to have a steak with side dishes. Don't think it's fair that they tell me I can't have it and then charge me extra to get the size that were free. Everything was good except the fact that the overcharged for something I should have gotten for free with my meal.
