Fire road is steep but good hike not crowded

3 miles up and back, very steep, solid trail to start your day or a quick weekday hike.

Great way to climb Cowles Mountain. Join the main trail to the summit for the last half mile.

Though it's out n back you can loop via the front side of the MTN off golf crest Dr. Usually maintained well w steady elevations to the top. Not as rough and choppy as the front side. Once at the top, fantastic views.

I really liked this trail. There are some steep parts to be sure, but it is less crowded than the main side. It is a different view from this side of the mountain, but I liked it. It can be a little slippery coming down. Trekking poles would really help.

Anytime you can park here and go hiking with your best friends and loved pups! San Diego is the best city in the US

It's a good easy hike if you take the trailhead

This is a very nice trail to hike. Usually it is less traveled during the weekdays, busy during weekend, but, none-the-less, very relaxing(minus the hike). If you go out to Piles Peak, it's 3 miles out from Barker Way Trailhead. Usually rarely traveled. Usually burn about 1200 calories on the hike. Beautiful views. About a 2 hr round trip walking.

Another backside to the Monument at Cowles Mt and Pyle Peak. A lil less congested than the front , that's what I love about this trails

Want to avoid all the chaos on the main trail?
Barker way is the way to go.
Whole path is loose gravel. Burt a much more rewarding trek up the mountain

Very nice trail and a bit difficult for kids. It is worth is when you get to the top and enjoy the view.

Great location for walking the trails and the scenery along the trails and at the top of the Mountain are spectacular!

Omg...that hike was no joke. It took me about 45 minutes up the mountain as I am a novice. I am so proud that we have this great mountain to hike that's located right here in the neighborhood.

I prefer this route over the traditional Cowles route; more private and beautiful

Cowles mountain is the highest peak in San Diego county. Great views.

Beautiful hike with a couple tangent trails attached. About the same distance as the Golfcrest side but with longer steeps and a few rolling hills. Less people and wider road. Love it.
