Checkers has a special place in my heart. My grandfather hired Jim, Terry, and Rita when they started working for IGA. I got my start working for Jim Lewis 35-plus years ago. I can still give you the UPC codes to certain products from Fleming Foods to this day. I left Checkers and then moved to several companies working in HR, Operations, GM, and now regional VP for a large retailer. We get used to shopping at your local big box retailers and forget the value of independent mom/pop retailers who are the backbone, which most big box retailers once were.
I visited recently, and while people have passed away, retired, moved on to other things, the store hasn't changed. The meat department is still hands down the best in town. Prices are still competitive if not the best.
I can still hear Jim Lewis asking for carts to be brought back into the store. Or Rita trying to make sense of a cashiers end of shift till count. Rita was one of a kind, and I still think about her occasionally when I am visiting one of the stores in my territory and something or someone will remind me of Rite or Terry.
As more and more independent grocers and department stores get swallowed up by big chains, it is nice that at least one independent grocer is still going strong.

Pretty broad selections, and discount brands (Best Choice) are similar to Price Chopper. Produce selection is a bit limited. OTOH, frozen foods and meats have broad selections & better prices than Dillons. Center store aisles are good, too. They have electric pre-shave fluid!

Great customer service at checkout, though it’s self-bag (but you have option of paper). There’s an in-house coffee shop, Mother Earth Coffee, too.

One of the older places in town. Grocery store that carries some harder to find items. Keep in mind that the entrance and exit sides are blocked when you go into the store. you have to go through the fresh fruit and veg area before you can head towards anywhere else including the side where the checkout is located. The banana sale has been the usual draw but there’s plenty more fresh and frozen foods to choose from.

I've been buying my meats from Dillons and Walmart for years, gave checkers a shot after a co worker told me about a good sale going on, and they are better quality hands down. You can literally taste the difference. Make since they have an in store butcher but I didn't know it'd be that big a difference. Give them a shot

I live about 40 miles from Checkers, but like go stop in when in the area visiting family, to get the homemade torilllas. The tortillas are SO good. I asked a manager where they were, the stand was missing. He asked the girl in the back, if they had any. She stated they were out and going to be making more soon. The manager left the area, and the lady from the bakery asked how long I was going to be in the store. I said awhile. She told me if I gave her 10 minutes, she was heat up the press and make some for me, but they will be warm in the bag, I told her that did not bother me. She also said she would find me in the store to give them to me. I walked around for awhile and headed back, where she gave me the tortillas and I thanked her so much.
She went the extra mile and that is rare nowadays, I was so impressed. Love checkers and the lady from the bakery!!

When they have sale prices on meats and produce, you can find incredible deals! I love their selection of produce and the fact that they carry locally grown produce in season.

This store has whatever you're looking for. I deliver here and often shop because they have a better than good selection both in their meat and produce. If I can't find it at any other store, I can always count on them to have it.

A very clean and nice store with excellent food and prices you can have you meats sliced here by butchers that are very nice people the employees make you feel like your shopping at home very helpful and nice . The only place I shop for foods is checkers period . Right people right place great foods checkers try it you'll see .

Every time I go for groceries here in KC, I miss Checkers. Nothing beats it. Great deals in every department AND locally owned.

This is perhaps the best locally owned grocery store in Lawrence, Kansas. When I lived in Kansas, I used to go at least once a week. Great selection of stuff, great prices, friendly and helpful people, and you just can't miss 19 cents/lb bananas every Thursday!

Great place to shop for groceries and if u need help finding an item the worker staff are always polite and helpful

Checkers has always been a great place for meat and produce, but the addition of coffee and a gluten free bakery makes them stand out against other stores in town. They also tend to do a better job keeping things in stock.

We love the selection of ethnic foods available.
Meat department is always well stocked and full of great deals.

Good prices, we stop in here to pick up stuff for our son who goes to school out here.

Clean and has good prices, sales always worth it, always has seasonal items, friendly check out people, best fresh fruit & veggies in town.
Do not bring anything even vaguely shaped like a backpack (ex. A mini backpack shaped purse) or they'll yell at you.

I found some really good prices in the meat department and the meat looked high quality. Like everyone else, they alittle high on their eggs. Store was clean and organized. No long check-out lanes. Had enough check-out lanes to accommodate the customes. Unlike some stores that only have 1 check-out available, the rest is self check-out and you stand waiting in line for your turn. I loved the music that was playing. Made my shopping a better experience. I enjoy music from the 50' and 60's. I have they never change.

The store was clean and well stocked. Nor was it crowded, there was no wait to check out. The associate engaged with me very well and was extremely pleasant. The produce was very nice and fresh. Everything I went in for was in stock and I had absolutely no difficulty finding it! My digital coupons worked perfectly at checkout. It was a pretty fantastic shopping experience overall. Love the prices and selection. I can get items I used to think I had to drive to Overland Park and Kansas City here for a far better price. Not only that I've had a positive experience with every employee I've spoke to at this store. Going to Checkers is an absolute delight.
