Quinta do Mar, Caloura

This B&B was the best place I have ever stayed at. The accommodations are very comfortable, clean, and pretty. The common areas are actually fun to hang out with beautiful views. The service was outmatched with delicious breakfasts, drink, and snack options, & recommendations from the owners. I wish I could find a place like this again in my travels but it’s outmatched!

The key thing to understand about this wonderful place is that it is designed, managed and hosted by a couple of guys who are just brilliant.

Set on a steeply sloping hillside, descending to a kerbside corner in a delightful village close to the sea, this boutique hotel has stylishly designed buildings of architectural elegance, striking and tasteful modern additions to an old Quinta that gives it historic charm. Within both old and new are delightfully laid out and furnished rooms, the reception in the old part, the large ensuite bedrooms in the new. These have been designed with a great eye for detail and with plenty of storage for clothes and luggage so you can really settle in.

Because of the steep hillside, the buildings are surrounded by a maze of sloping paths, retaining walls and planting between split level gardens that adds an air of mystery and discovery as you explore them. You will soon find the outside pavilion and shaded terrace with comfortable chairs and tables with a view over the infinity pool to the sea. The pavilion is where Chris prepares the bespoke breakfasts (and dinners upon request) that make every morning an adventure. Always something different, tasty, novel, yet served in a predictable context of excellent basics, fruits, cereal, breads, all of the highest quality. Throughout the day you can help yourself to iced water, tea, coffee and cake for free, or drinks from the generously stocked and reasonably priced “honour bar” where you simply jot down what you’ve taken and settle up when you leave. There are plenty of sun loungers by the pool, which is just the right size and beautifully warm. Valeria takes excellent care of table service and the rooms.

Nick and Chris are tactful and gracious hosts, there when you want them and almost telepathically absent when you would rather be alone. They know everything about the island and its restaurants, facilities and attractions. Nothing is too much trouble, they are charming, empathetic and knowledgeable.

I have to say that their kindness and hospitality, and the delightful Quinta do Mar, made our short break in the Azores one that we will genuinely treasure until the next time.

The hospitality and service delivered by Chris and Nick was first rate in an environment committed to make your stay most pleasant and memorable . Chris' breakfasts surpass anything that we have encountered in prior travel venues. Accommodation is very clean and comfortable and will be enhanced with planned renovations in the winter of 2019. Valeria taught us the true meaning of gracious serving. We thoroughly enjoyed our 8 day stay and will remember our Azores trip by fondly recalling the hospitality and friendship created by Chris and Nick.

Amazing getaway run by two friendly British gentlemen. Chris and Nick were very welcoming. Breakfast was delicious each morning and we enjoyed spending time on the grounds, which is a maze of gardens and staircases. I recommend this to anyone looking for a quite place to stay.

Our second visit to the Azores.
During the first we visited 7 islands and top and tailed it with a stay with Nick and Chris at Qunita do Mar at Caloura.
This time it was a week's chill out break solely at Quinta do Mar.
The exceptional hospitality and service in a stunning location made it the place to stay on our second visit. A good decision - one of the few places one can recommend without reservation. It is no surprise that it is one of the top 25 places to stay in Portugal and number one in the Azores.
The Azores is a wonderful place to visit and Quinta do Mar is the place to stay if you do.

Wir hatten eine wundervolle Woche bei unseren Gastgebern Chris und Nick. Die Anlage ist in verschiedenen Ebenen angelegt, viele Palmen, Hortensien und verschiedene Pflanzen,sehr gepflegt. Die Zimmer sind sauber, sehr geräumig, mit einem großen Schrank, angenehm feste Matratzen, Kommoden, TV inkl. Filmen, Balkon, Klimaanlage. Großes Bad mit vielen Ablage Möglichkeiten, Badewanne mit Dusche integriert und einem kleinen Fenster welches geöffnet werden kann. Frühstück nimmt man oberhalb vom Pool ein mit Blick auf das Meer, im Freien. Jeden Tag gibt es einen frischen Obstteller, danach täglich neue Ei Variationen, von Omelette, Rührei bis hin zu Quiche. Mega! Müsli, Joghurt, Milch, Säfte, Kuchen, Käse, Brötchen, Marmelade. Da ist für jeden was dabei. Quellwasser in Glasflaschen ist jederzeit kostenlos verfügbar, ebenso wie Kaffee, und Tee. Eine gute Auswahl an Wein, Spirituosen und Softgetränken rundet das ganze ab; diese schreibt man auf und bezahlt am Ende des Urlaubs. Nur 5 min Fußweg zur Bar Caloura, einem super Fisch Restaurant mit Blick aufs Meer und direkt nebenan mit der Möglichkeit, im Meer zu baden. Supermarkt und schöne Aussichtspunkte gibt es im Ort, ein Auto ist definitiv empfehlenswert wenn man die Insel erkunden möchte. Aber auch ohne wird ein Shuttle Service von den Inhabern angeboten. Alles in allem ein Aufenthalt, der die 5 Sterne mehr als verdient hat. Wir würden das familiär geführte Boutique Hotel mit aktuell 4 Zimmern jederzeit wärmstens weiter empfehlen.
