The National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands was a real treat. There was so much to see. The museum is well laid out and fun to tour through.

The full-size ship docked at the museum was exciting to explore. I only hit my head once! It is truly hard to believe how people sail so far on ships so small compared to ships of today.

The display of ship's mastheads was impressive and interesting to view. The very large and detailed model ships were magnificent. The atrium in the center of the museum is very large and inviting. It is a great place to take a break and relax.

This is one museum you don't want to miss when you are in Amsterdam. It has something of the entire family.

Enjoy!

Breathtaking. Very accessible and good for all ages. I would say this is the most family friendly place below the zoo and at times maybe higher.
Inexpensive and moving for each exhibit. There is both play areas where you can touch and feel and standard museum areas. Plan for 2 hours minimum to see most of it.

Wonderful museum, very educational with a wide variety of exhibits. We particularly loved the replica VOC ship that they have. This museum also has wonderful amenities for disabled guests, everything is accessible via lift, they have accessible toilets and even on the replica ship it is possible to access one of the decks via lift. It's also got a lovely gift shop and cafe. We had a wonderful afternoon here.

It is hardly a surprise that the big ship and touring that was the highlight of the visit for our 8 year old son... But the rest of the exhibitions are also highly interesting on many different levels. They the maritime area from different aspects and each tell their own story.

Go visit, enjoy the stories that the exhibitions tell and the fantastic surroundings that help tell them.

I had a great time there. It consist of real model ship which you can enter and enjoy having a great view of the city as well as the small models which are perfectly made with woods.
Moreover, it has a part related to the food trade via the sea which can be a bit hurful for some to see the actual image.
Another part which was really interesting for me was the dutch history of map making.
There was a section about the whale hunting. Intriguing but sad.
Review of a adventurer staying solo in the sea for quite long time as well as a funny interview with two gay people working and living as a ship crew
And many others.
It was very children-friendly I have to add. If you have a 3 year old or older. This is a good place to go.

Take your time as the museum is huge and at least 5 hours would be advisable to get the full experience. So take it one wing at a time, take a break in the courtyard are where you can have something to eat and grab a coffee or a tea.

Beautiful experience. Very interesting. The ship outside Is very funny in particolar for young people. In the last floor there was a beautiful exposition on the food that i really appreciated. The Museum Is a bit confusing since some room are empty and sometimes Is difficult to understand the correct direction you have to take to enter in the "correct room". Very recommended!

Highly recommend a visit, especially with your kids. Our first full day in Amsterdam included a visit to this museum and was well worth it. My kids enjoyed the exhibits in the museum, but the highlight of our visit was obviously the ship. It was hard for me to get the kids to leave the ship...even though it was closing time:) Loved it here, very highly recommend.

I absolutely loved the museum! We spent a full day there, slowly walking around, watching all the videos, soaking in all that magnificent history! I particularly enjoyed learning about the navigational instruments. Also, the ship models are breathtaking.
There is a lot to learn here, about whaling, the VOC, the Dutch golden century. Stepping into the merchant ship is a whole new experience. Highly recommended for history buffs!

Very interesting place, 3 floor.
Beautiful hall with panoramic roof .
Cute cafe in the hall of the building.
A lot of things about ships and boats from hundreds of years.
And of course, a separate place of art is the big old boat outside of the building..
My recommendations to visit 👍

We went here because someone in our group loves ships, navy, and water. By the end we all loved this museum. What a pleasant experience the exceeded our expectations. The ship outside was a little challenging for the elderly person in our group because of the walking up and down the stairs. The rest of the museum was well done for handicap access. Very interesting looking at the maps, sextants, and ship decorations.

Love this place... if you are a fan of nautical stuff plan at least 4... preferably 6 hours for the visit. Cool thing is that your ticket is valid for a whole day - they issue an entry bracelet and visitors can leave the museum to have some food and come back. Highly reccomend.

It is a fantastic museum and a fine example of maritime heritage preservation. I suggest this museum on a rainy day as it's mostly indoors and takes several hours.

The outdoor ship is great to explore and gives a glimpse of life back then. The indoor exhibits are detailed, well-kept, and informative. I especially like the 'curiosity' section. You can get a free audio guide.

The building itself is cool to explore, and there is a nice cafe, locker, and toilets.

If I remember entry, it was around 10 euros.

Great collection of paintings, weapons, and other artifacts. Audiotour was very good and easy to use. The ship is very kid friendly. Would be great for groups. Cafe is also very reasonably.

We stopped here as a planned excursion at the end of our river cruise. This place exceeded my expectations. Climbing in and around the restored ship was interesting and fun! Don't miss "The Tale of the Whale", which while partially designed for kids, had lots of great information for adults. Both my wife and I were glad we bent over and went into the mouth of the whale to see a model of a whale's beating heart. The old film about whaling brought back many memories from reading Moby Dick. Definitely worth seeing if you have the time.

Amazing experience for adults or children. Super interesting stories, great temporary exhibitons and the chance to see the royal boat and visit the real replica of the Amsterdam boat which sank a long time ago in Texel. I can’t recommend more :)
